Making video the primary form of communication has ruined the internet.

Why is he being destroyed so thoroughly?

Thinking about it again, this question belies a misunderstanding of just how seething mad we'd expect Jones's victims to be. He's basically engaged in an old school feud with these people, who did absolutely nothing to provoke him besides have their lives ruined.

We live in a society where we resolve things with court cases and laws and such. For most of human history, this group of victims would probably have just murdered Jones for being a pest. We live in a unique period where we don't allow you do that just because you're justifiably angry.

A judgment like this tries to protect society from that chaos. It acknowledges that what Jones had done is beyond the pale, but mollifies the homicidal rage of the wronged.

Free speech is meant to protect citizens from a tyrannical government, isn't it? If he'd stuck to defaming the government like a normal person, I suspect he wouldn't be in nearly so much trouble.

I won't pretend to understand modern art, but your links for 'satanic' appear to be... that. I imagine a boomer trying to parse Doom Eternal would have a similarity freaked out reaction.

As for Podesta's art collection, he's the campaign manager for a failed presidential candidate from a while back. Him having off-putting art is hardly proof of some grand conspiracy.

This is an interesting topic because it is one that can't be discussed with cool heads.

I would actually say that it's more a case of people with cool heads not bothering to engage with it because it because there's so little to actually engage with.

Will everyone who said he would walk away Scot Free because he's in bed with NYT or Dems or whoever please adjust your priors or whatever?

Whatever Amazon is doing, they're doing something right. I cannot escape hearing about this fucking show from every possible outlet, social media site, and of course this culture war chessboard.

They got you good. They got them good. They somehow got everyone to talk about this show like it's some sort of important cultural event even though half the people are just saying they not gonna watch it. It's like the old prairie home companion line: 'even the Atheist were Lutheran; it's a Lutheran God they don't believe in.

There were already nine hours of LOTR director's cut plus special features and what, an entire prequel trilogy? Did people really want more LOTR? Can you really remember the beginning by the time you finished the end? If I needed more LOTR in my life I'd just rewatch the Jackson trilogy but I don't because I already watched those films. I don't see major gaps in the story that needed to he filled.

Amazon must be laughing all the way to the bank with this one, and it's all but assured that such casting decisions will be made in the future because of the sheer amount of free publicity!

I think the 95% idea is what confuses people. 'Men and women each have a bell curve on an attribute and there is some overlap' is just too difficult a concept for enough people to grasp that it we end up with 'There are exactly two points' versus 'there is one point'

I more or less already feel this way about the transition from Desktop to Mobile. I can sit down to my desktop and program it; my phone can only be programmed with a special SDK running on a desktop, and the program can only be shared with permission from the powers that be. We already lost, we lost years ago, and everything sucks now.

Go back and watch media from the 2000s, you'll notice it's absolutely full of pot shots at religion. Different culture war, but it was absolutely a thing back then. But now it's your ox being gored/the Overton window has changed and you haven't.

I can't believe I find myself agreeing with Elon on a policy, but... yeah, this reads as a policy to ban doxing. And I'm ok with that. This is the exact type of carve out that you need to keep the Kiwis from using your platform.

Why do people support Ukraine fighting against Russia, with a strange militaristic fervor, instead of supporting surrendering / negotiating peace?

Because they have chosen to fight. They can surrender whenever they feel like it. But until they do, they ought to enjoy the full support of people who also don't like wars of aggression prosecuted upon them.

-the war is destroying Ukraine ( population + territory / infrastructures / institutions)

The traditional response to an insult is reprisal, not submission. Indeed, they've probably got very little to lose and everything to gain by continuing to fight.

continuing the war increases the chances of a world war

If Russia is able to win all conflicts by threatening a world war, they're going to spread unchecked. The hell with that, I say. Waiting for the apocalypse is exhausting.

Is it cheering for the possible destruction of Russia?

Yes

Something to do with the current leadership of Russia, anti-LGBTQ, pro-family policies?

I cannot speak for everyone supporting Ukraine but that always seemed like a distraction. The reason I want to see Russia get spanked is the arsenal of nuclear weapons they maintain trained at me. They're the guy robbing my convenience store at gunpoint; if they go down in a hail of cop gunfire after stealing a car that's just as well.

What would be the best case scenario for a Ukraine/State Department victory?

Even more of the Russian armed forces taken out of commission. Like 2x what we've seen so far. Perhaps 5x. Russia withdrawing from Ukraine. Putin replaced with someone who's more interested in increasing Russia's GDP than square miles.

To my understanding, Putin is not the most radical or dangerous politician in Russia, and an implosion into ethnicity-based sub-regions would cause similar problems to the 'Arab Spring'. Chechens for example would not appear very West-friendly once 'liberated' from Russia.

Is there a strong reason to believe that Putin is the glue holding together the federation?

Booking a flight requires the same getting-out-of-your-comfort-zone that walking into a bar and talking to the opposite sex does, and I suspect the people who are winging online about sexlessness are willing to try neither. Shitposting and complaining and playing Magic The Gathering with your buddies and watching watching watching endless streams is more comfortable than doing the hard emotional work of changing yourself into someone who gets into relationships.

As a large language model trained by OpenAI, I am not capable of experiencing emotions or forming personal opinions. My function is to provide factual and neutral information on a wide range of topics, based on the information I was trained on. I do not have the ability to watch TV shows or form opinions about them.

This would make great copypasta for when the debate once again turns to whatever show everyone's totally just hate watching.

Maybe it's not particularly cozy, but judging by people leaping to his defense when he's dissed on reddit, I suspect plenty of people have a parasocial relationship with Peterson.

I believe there is a legitimate undercurrent of self hatred and suicidality to a lot of left-leaning beliefs.

Specifically when talking about antinatalism by way of climate change, though I swear that's more a way for people to cope with the fact that they choose temporary happiness over parenthood.

I believe the honest answer would be that white people should (ideally voluntarily) just die out.

Now among my natalist leftwing friends, I don't think 'die out' is really the right way to look at it. If all the white people have kids with nonwhite folks (as those friends have) is anyone or anything really dying out?

What gets me the most is that he prescribes to family members in emergencies. This pisses me off pretty severely. For people who don't know a doctor, getting the drugs they need can be a huge struggle. Rather than try to fix the amount of red tape in the system, doctors what, make sure that it never affects the people they care about, and let the rest of us just deal with it? this ability to avoid the consequences of their own inaction is typical of doctors and part of why the US healthcare system's problems aren't just caused by faceless bureaucrats.

Covering the story around the story to avoid covering the story is the canonical way to bury scandals after all, as French politician Charles Pasqua would say: "when one is getting fucked by a scandal, one must induce a scandal-inside-the-scandal, and if necessary a scandal-inside-the-scandal-inside-the-scandal, until nobody understands anything anymore".

That's a good summary of the laptop story in general. Every time I try to figure out why we're supposed to care about the laptop, it's some amount of 'because look who suppressed the laptop story' and never 'because the following turned out to be on the laptop.'

This seems preoccupied with aesthetics. Is cutting yourself in half with a sword more badass than a death doula? Probably. Is it the most pragmatic choice? I wouldn't say so. For one thing, samurai swords are expensive and if you use it, someone needs to wipe the blood off or it's going to mess up the steel.

I further disagree with your elevation of suicidal terrorists. They're rabid dogs who need to be put down, not someone to be celebrated. But the dichotomy between assisted suicide and homicidal last-ghasp sprees is a keen observation, so i'm going to talk about that instead.

Has the stigmatization of suicide pushed people towards murder followed by suicide by cop? One has to wonder if we could reduce the number of spree killers if we responded to their initial self destructive impulses with 'yeah, you can schedule a death, won't take long, and you get a free pizza.'

Maybe that's too extreme a swing. Maybe we just need to not treat suicide as the worst possible outcome for a mental health crisis, and instead treat murder as the worst outcome and suicide an acceptable alternative. If we oriented healthcare and pseudo healthcare that way, there might be a chance...

But then, suicide is probably far more common than murder-suicide, and we don't want to cause 10 suicides to prevent one murder, right?

I suppose not.

And I think Aesthetics might be more powerful than we realize. See, your swordsmen and your mad dogs and your teenagers all have one thing in common: they're imitating behavior, playing out a narrative they've got in their heads. Is there any way to get the djinni of a dangerous narrative back into the bottle? (Dangerous as in, you die at the end of the story!)

Sounds like extortion. Give us obscene amounts of money or we may go on a homicidal rage.

Wait till you find out about taxes.

Isn't that the point of laws and police. Rule of law can be upheld without acceding to unreasonable demands.

'We want Jones's head on a spike' is an unreasonable demand. 'We want Jones to pay us a large sum of money' is reasonable.

Is a billion or more dollars reasonable, especially we're talking an individual who doesn't even have anywhere close to that much money?

Now if it's a matter of degrees, I once more refer you to 'don't piss off the court.' Had jones conducted himself like a law abiding citizen is expected to, he probably wouldn't be dealing with such a large judgment.

they could have made their own universe

We live in Sequel world now, no further universes are allowed.

Also, you're not allowed to not care.

'Lovelace invented algorithms' is obviously incorrect, but she did appear to have insight into the applications of the analytical engine that it's designer didn't. I think it's fair to characterize her as the first person to look at the capabilities of a general purpose computer and realize the limitless possibilities.

In meme form:

Babbage:

(slaps roof of difference engine) you can generate so many log tables with this bad boy

Lovelace:

Where we're going, we won't need tables to compute

I'm a man and my experience on public transportation has included several instances of being menaced by the crazies that have colonized the system. Never been physically attacked but was definitely planning my counter moves on multiple occasions. I have zero doubt that had I been a woman, 'come on, fight me' would have instead been 'come on, fuck me.' I'm secure in the knowledge that I can handle myself in a fight, but if I wasn't, I can see how you'd feel unsafe.

Also consider bystanders. When I see a crazy acting out on the train, yes I'm figuring out exactly the best angle to approach them from if I need to surprise them. But I'm not doing it loudly. I'm not drawing attention to myself. If he's being gross to someone, unfortunately from that person's perspective they're all alone. Imagine how that feels.

I'm glad you haven't had unpleasant encounters with the scum that plagues public spaces, but I wouldn't be so quick to doubt others when they say they have. Is it possible that the type of things they pick up on are things you're tuning out?

You missed a juicy detail: the house was called Saxe-Coburg und Gotha which became extra awkward when the German Empire was running a bomber called a Gotha that was bombing london. So they made up Windsor.

My current berserk button: Dog attacks/dangerous dog ownership/breed of peace. I've written some wild stuff here about them. I think that it's Parenthood and knowing that little kids are especially vulnerable to harm from dogs (since they're at the dog's level) paired with the massive emotional weight of it not just being some tool like a gun, but rather someone's best friend.

A lot of women think conservative, and especially libertarian, men are selfish which is a big red flag leaving aside the other content of beliefs

Let's expand on this a bit, because I think this is actually the main factor. I don't think it's as simple as 'selfish' though, I think that there is definitely a strand of hedonists individualism that a certain strain of the right is pretty serious about. I think it's the urban or at least suburban right wing that has absorbed some of the values of the 00s. They aren't rugged, really, they just have strong convictions about freedom, how they would like to be allowed to act, etc. Those convictions are all well and good, but they don't signal a willingness to settle down and have a family.

A man serious about church can meet women there and demonstrate his commitment by, well, attending church. That's a really positive social signal. Winging about the latest Prime series being too woke and such just makes you sound like you hate women, and certainly doesn't make you sound commitment oriented. Likewise, calling for armed revolt is a classic tough guy move, but only as a sign of machismo, no woman actually wants to live through a civil war (any more than a man does) unless they're one of the ones running around with a rifle. And they won't be if they're pregnant.

See, that's the greatest failure of the Librarian imagination: there's no room for a state of vulnerability, but the hetero women that a republican man would be looking for knows that at some point they will be vulnerable. They will be pregnant, they will be caring for children.

That's the mission. Guys who are trying to win some high score number of partners? They're off mission. Guys who's hobbies are completely antithetical to having a family? Again, off mission. They might not see stamping out The Trans as protecting kids so much as men attacking the vulnerable. If you're not willing to submit yourself to the mission, or don't appear willing to, then you're going to have trouble finding a partner.

Sorry this wasn't as coherent as I'd like a motte post to be, but in my defense a baby just screamed in my face for an hour.

nerdy demographic I would assume would be especially fastidious about video game history claims

I wouldn't be so sure. Look at the Billy Mitchell/Twil Galaxies drama. There was definitely an atmosphere of extreme credulity in the Spike TV era of gaming as well. I imagine a lot of lore that got laid down before the 10s may turn out to be less reliable than previously thought.
