That's partly why I don't appreciate a bunch of childless guys telling me and other women that there's a fertility crisis and it's all our fault, men - the innocent little lambs - have nothing to do with it. So yeah, I damn well am going to say "Okay, if you're out there judging women for 'riding the cock carousel', what have you done to address the problem? Are you a husband and father? If not, why not?"

Tone policing aside, this is definitely a valid point. As they sometimes note on PCM, "Everybody want a trad wife, nobody wanna be a trad guy." I get the sense that there are a lot of dudes who want to seethe about prisoner's dillemas online, and they're not actually wrong! But seething does nothing to fix the problem; you need large numbers of people, men and women both to actively and enthusiastically choose to cooperate. Unfuck yourself first, modern man.

68% of women say immigration is a good thing, which is both a lot, and probably not enough to meet the idea of a biological imperative. Which compares to...71% of men who think immigration is a good thing. There is no gender split on this issue.

Eh, that's just asking about "immigration on the whole". I don't think OP is asking about H1Bs, but instead obviously about the illegal crossings at the southern border. Anecdotally, the news coverage of that is very much in the style of heart-string tugging that is traditionally aimed at women. If such a gender gap exists in this narrower area, I would bet that's a major cause.

Well, Helen's family springs to mind, they must fail any reasonable standard.

I don't know that the standard is reasonable by modern sensibilities. Helen was given a dangerous opportunity for incredible power, and the whole schtick of it was that it had to be hidden from the spirits. The Graubard's might be a better example, but even then, they're "fixing" and "improving" their children.

I'll admit I'm not omnisciently certain about that version of history I relayed. But the problem with DARE is that it told people wildly exaggerated lies, from a position of authority. Then people tried some pot, realized they didn't kill their friends and destroy their life, and figured that heroin was probably fine too. The anti-vax stuff was also fairly exaggerated, but in a more defensible, joking manner. Also, it was coming from a stance of higher status, well-off STEMlords ripping into their friend's housewives for being gullible and negligent. Basically, I think in those situations, mean girl tactics worked better at manipulating behavior than out-of-touch lectures from the principal.

Do you have any particularly good zingers you would use to ridicule someone who is complaining about the harry potter stuff?

I might go with variations on the Read Another Book memes. Treat caring about Harry Potter at all as low-status and childish.

I'm open to the idea that civil arguments aren't always the right approach. I do want to at least have a rationalization for my position, then I can start making convincing arguments and poking fun (ridiculing?).

I wish you the best of luck. If you have any success, with any approach, please let us know.

Do you have anosmia? Royal Farms reek like the worst blend of gasoline and fried chicken.

Based.

I'm talking about

@HlynkaGC, too.

Pale is doing a very good job of not taking that path, even while laying out why it might be a desirable option for some of the protagonists.

I have a couple friends who enjoyed it. The way you could build out gear/cyberwear/magic let you have really customizable builds and loadouts for an FPS. Kind of a waste of the IP though.

Maybe Google just wasn't showing me paywalled results, or my phrasing was selecting for outlets like Rawstory.

That's just libertarianism, and describes almost no one in contemporary politics. FWIW, I kept hearing it used as a pejorative at people like Hilary Clinton and did a giant double-take when I looked up the wiki definition. I think this one is a victim of the linguistic clusterfuck around the word "liberal".

And specific products you'd recommend?

I tried to google a bit for it, but without remembering something specific like the name of the author, there are too many search confounders.

Remind yourself that anything you do is just a first draft, so it's ok if it sucks.

Luck to you, too.

What's wrong with the Wednesday threads?

Do you play an instrument?

I would say that I can't carry a tune in a bucket, but it's possible that an AI could possible attain true agency, and upon hearing my attempts at music, decide the human species was irredeemable.

For that I can only suggest fanfiction. I'd shill /r/rational, but I'm pretty sure I've seen you around there before.

Yeah, though that place lost a lot of my attention naturally. Anything worth checking out in the last couple years?

Maybe if 100% of all matter is converted into computronium-based Awareness, all of these problems will finally solve themselves.

The dean would have worn an SS uniform if he though "Jeffrey" might like it.

Iirc, the reasoning was explicitly Doylist. Wildbow mentioned at some point that it seemed likely to turn into giant flaming culture wars and so he decided to just kind of ignore the entire glaring topic.

The stuff /teachers constantly complains about sounds exactly like mastery learning. PBL sounds delightfully impossible to measure. Why are these supposed to be good?

What about just getting them fired and banned from using banks?

So if your girlfriend's BFF says "If you break up with her, she'll kill herself. Also, if you don't empty your savings to take her on a fantasy vacation, she'll kill herself. Also, if you don’t post a glowing, thoughtful comment on every Instagram post, she'll kill herself." That's not a threat because it has an extra step? The BFF totally isn’t in on the social engineering, she's just making predictions, honest!

Sorry, doesn’t pass the smell test. If your BFF is that suicidal, you need to be getting them committed under suicide watch. You are very charitably assuming a level of sincerity and decoupled remove that I think is just utterly lacking in evidence. I believe the odds of any given TRA lying to manipulate people is incomparably higher than the odds of some trans person deciding to end it because they were misgendered in a reddit comment.

Nah, same thing. Their deaths are particularly sad, so we make extra efforts to cheer them (and ourselves) up.

But that does not mean the outer circles are empty. You could have someone who cares strictly less about those outside his immediate family, yet still be able to treat with them, even respect them. I say "could," but as you observe, this is the normal state of affairs.

Not sure about the original thesis, but this counterpoint ignores the ingroup/outgroup/fargroup dynamic. It is common for some of those concentric circles to include functional complete apathy and even outright hostility. The "Early Life" trope does exist, and politics is the mindkiller.

Weirkey Chronicles.

I think this is just a new halfway measure that didn't have a specific term. Would anyone be unhappy with calling this as "partial shadowban" or something like that?

I can tell that subconsciously I'm much more dismissive of men 5" shorter than me, than men around my own height.

Note, this does not apply to short men who are visibly jacked. Take the dwarf pill. Clangeddin be with you.
