That might just be due to the US's cultural influence. They feel like their white people must have done something horrible to feel guilty about, since that's the message they're hearing pushed all the time, even if it's really about the US and not Canada.
Yeah this is my thought too. Nothing about this makes HRs or walks less valuable, and it's highly unclear it makes them more difficult relative to other types of hits.
Also moving the mound back is a lot more invasive than making the mound higher/lower, and probably would achieve similar results. Indeed this already happened in the 60s when pitchers were getting too dominant - they lowered the mound, which gives a little advantage to hitters.
I remember seeing stories on the news about how our troops deployed to Iraq weren't properly equipped, that either they didn't have gas masks or the gas masks didn't work properly. This seemed kind of insane, since the whole reason to go to war was because Iraq had chemical weapons, so in that case wouldn't you want to be really sure the gas masks worked? Probably was not a conspiracy though, probably just normal incompetence.
