I'd bet more of our performance difference being me having a couple years on you. I sometimes wonder how much of the improvement you described is down to personal experience, how much is collective knowledge, and how much is purely mechanical.
First of all, congratulations! However...
Pokemon Red took me months to beat in 1998 because I was seven years old, I wandered around for hours trying to do basic things because I couldn't figure out puzzles, and ultimately beat the Elite Four with an utterly absurd team because I hadn't thought ahead about building a good team.
I didn't find it that hard as a kid in '98. While working on my Pokédex, I looked all over for powerful Pokémon! Not only that, I assembled teams that would beat any Pokémon type! And then, I was the Pokémon League champion! FiveHour, do you know what that means? I'll tell you!

Yes; his Shear will still apply its debuff if it lands directly, so covering the combat table with at least a block is pretty much non-negotiable over the long term. That being said, I believe paladin is preferred due to Holy Shield having 8 charges to Shield Block's 2, since Illidan has a very short swing timer.
