The way that HBD is used around here seems to imply some amount of believing that racial population-level differences in traits like intelligence (1) exist and (2) are significantly heritable.




Would he really disagree with this?  It's basic statistics.  The sketchy part is attempting to map a distinct population onto some kind of "race". Maybe Jennifer Lawrence is actually worth $25 million dollars, but I don't think so. A more sustainable model for Hollywood would be to pay more actors a more moderate sum, creating more things on a smaller budget to appeal to more groups and sub-genres.

I’m having trouble understanding your point, with a lot of what seem to me like unsubstantiated yet controversial assertions.




I think Scott's title is actually wrong. People do want a purely biological apolitical taxonomy of mental disorders - they just also want the world to be just, so there wouldn't be any conflict. That what is true and what we want to be true do, in the end, coincide; that the truth would never be inconvenient to those with the correct values.




I read Scott as saying “No, you don’t want to eat that tub of ice cream, even though you are tempted.  It comes with consequences, laid out here, that you are not actually willing to accept”.  Is that your read in this paragraph?  I don’t think so, but I’m not sure what you’re getting at either.




To take a very different example: Todd Akin's claim that "legitimate rape" could not cause pregnancy: often considered an example of rank misogyny, but even if so, I would say it's much more importantly clear just-world thinking.




I’m not familiar with this person or claim.  I’m struggling to understand how pregnancy can be ruled out, given PIV intercourse, whether coerced or not.


EDIT: Akin said “legitimate rape” rarely causes pregnancy, because because their bodies prevent them from doing so.  “If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”


I have no idea of the biology there.  Maybe stress hormones in a traumatic situation somehow prevent conception?  Does this still comport with your point?

Conceivably BYND could have gotten a little flywheel going and continued to innovate into healthier better options.




I sort of get what you're gesturing at.  A flywheel represents the difficulty of spinning up a new market.  You need to solve both supply and demand at the same time to get the engine running.  Failure is catastrophic while success is a money machine.  If there is an imbalance, the flywheel is bottlenecked and doesn't want to spin.


In this case, the flywheel represents the pseudo-meat market, I suppose.  There have been meat substitutes and meat replacements before, but this is really a new kind of market and new kind of product.  Maybe this particular market is cursed, but if the flywheel gets going, then maybe:

The technical term is 'scamwick'.




Interesting. I'm not really a crypto guy (read Satoshi's whitepaper when BTC were going for pennies), or a trader, but I know a little bit about technical analysis.  The "wick" here is the wick of a candle chart, which shows the open & close, high & low, for a given trading period.  The delta between open and close forms the body of the candle, while the high and low (which necessarily equal or exceed the open and close) form the "wicks" (upper and lower) of the candle.  A so-called scamwick is a recognition of suspicious price movements which indicate price manipulation.

(2) It is perfectly reasonable to encourage students to report what they think is a hate crime, and then let the police sort out whether it really is. It is pretty standard operating procedure to encourage people to report if there is any doubt. Eg: "see something, say something."

Good point; I want to play with the 4x fixed scope first, as I haven’t squeezed the trigger under that one, yet.  Was going to use it to “eval” a 3x vs 5x prism setup.  Now that I understand how an Elcan works, I like that it has the 1x option.  Anyway, I’m rambling.  Point is, the Vortex is a cheap scope, 2FP, Crossfire line, now that I recall.  I’ll save for the SWFA SS 3-15x in that class.

That’s my prior, but I’d also be surprised if there were zero effect on conception from the stress and trauma of a violent rape. From an American point of view, while I'm totally sucked into supporting Ukraine and hating Russia's invasion, it's pretty nice that Russia is bleeding itself on the other side of the world with all kinds of internal tension and dissent.  I have Ukrainian friends, and while I'd love to see Russia expelled immediately and peace restored, that is only a temporary reprieve from Russia's imperial ambitions.  So while a grinding stalemate is terrible for Ukraine, I don't mind seeing the greatest geopolitical blunder in my lifetime be extended indefinitely to Russia's detriment.

Cancel culture regards the intent and attempt to end one’s career, reputation, and livelihood.  Just like we did to the Nazis.  It’s very real and very alive.  That some Nazis escaped to South America does not change the Allies’ intent and attempt to hold them accountable.


What is risible is for ordinary people to try to give other ordinary people the Nazi treatment.  Before social media, CK may have run into some small-time, inside baseball sanctions.  Maybe FX and HBO get wind of allegations and fail to renew his hit series.  And if the CK infractions are truly egregious and criminal, then maybe there is mainstream media coverage.
