Perhaps I should be embarrassed to admit that I haven't read an actual book in years. I satisfy that particular urge with youtube lectures and wikibinging.

"Fun" is certainly not the way I'd describe the works of Zero HP Lovecraft. His "The Green New Deal" is the only time I've ever thought a conspicuous suicide hotline link was appropriate.

I like olives, but you're right that they don't work well as ingredients. Brined olives are best served alone.

I would expect support for the monarchy to plummet. Queen Elizabeth was beloved, omni-temporal, and most-importantly, non-threatening. Charles III is none of those things. I am surprised he accepted the crown. It would have been much more prudent for him to step aside and let his more popular and less likely to die in the next 10 years son William take the throne.

I think there's an important element that's being overlooked here. A few months ago Magnus announced that he would not be defending his title in the next Chess World Championship. This strongly suggests that Magnus is not as heavily invested in chess as he used to be. That would explain both why he was beaten by such a weaker player and why he so casually throws the integrity of the game under the bus.

The people with their wallets on the line finally got the message that social justice on the field leads to low viewership. Ratings were terrible from 2016-2018 when kneeling was a big issue, rebounded a bit in 2019 when kneeling wasn’t as prominent, dipped back down again in 2020 when kneeling came back (although Covid makes this data point less compelling), then by 2021, when kneeling and social justice had once again faded into the background, ratings were back to their pre-2016 highs. At the time, mainstream outlets attributed the 2016-2018 dip to cordcutters, but cordcutting has continued since 2018 and yet NFL ratings have rebounded.

The fertility crisis could be solved tomorrow by outlawing birth control and legalizing child labor. Gay marriage is a symptom of sexuality becoming decoupled from reproduction, not a cause.

I consider GamerGate to be the start of the online Culture War proper. It was the first time I recall seeing random companies and youtube channels putting out official statements about internet bullshit that doesn't affect them. Nobody with a comments section could claim to be "apolitical" after that.

Most of the things listed above may have vanished from the public consciousness, but they still have enormous impact within their own particular niche communities. You aren't a good chemical plant worker unless Bhopal is in the back of your mind every time you get the urge to neglect your daily scrubber monitoring paperwork. I suspect the same is true for congressmen with mistresses, African statesmen, and insanity defense lawyers with respect to their relevant now-forgotten events

I agree with your take given the information we know now. The consensus amongst the rumor vine is that he was having an affair with at least one executive’s wife. That’s the only scenario which fits what we’re hearing.

They are called religious conservatives. They have pretty much accepted defeat in the public square, and thus only make their voices heard in their own communities and on election day. Can you even imagine someone openly saying they oppose homosexuality "because it's immoral" or "because God said so" in any respectable institution in 2022?

Really shows how stupid it was for Germany to join an organization dedicated to "keeping the Russians out, the Americans in, and the Germans down". Frog, meet scorpion.

The Kulak "America should invade Australia" post came to mind first, but really any of his top-level essays fit the bill. What's wonderful about KulakRevolt posts is that they are almost always wrong, oftentimes obviously wrong, but you really have to think about why they are wrong in a way that leaves you with a greater understanding of freedom, the state, and the issues involved.

I read everyone’s comments in an upper-middle class general American accent even when I know what country you’re from

This is a big problem. A few weeks ago during the whole Ime Udoka Celtics affair debacle there was a lot of support on places like /r/NBA for the idea that of course employee-employee relationships are bad, haven't you ever had HR compliance training? In real life, I have never met a single person who didn't think corporate-mandated sexual harassments training was the biggest load of shit they ever had to sit through.

One would have expected the Japanese to withdraw from China in 1941 after having their oil supply cut off. They bombed Pearl Harbor instead, knowing full well they couldn't win the war. Russia has weapons far more dangerous than aircraft carriers. They must not be given any reason to use them.

Are they really so scared of Russia that they would drink the corn syrup and give up on whatever is left of their culture/sovereignty/demographics?

Yes. Poland only ever exists as a sovereign nation when there are Western powers around strong enough to keep Russia and Germany in check. They were Napoleon's lapdog back in the day, they were the UK's lapdog during the inter-war years, and they're America's lapdog now.

That guy made me a few hundred bucks.

Wow, I didn’t know there were still otherwise intelligent people who think the problem with the dating market is matchmaking failure. In fact the issue is a blatantly obvious mismatch of supply and demand.

Dating apps have really blown a hole in the side of traditional dating advice.

“Get a decent career and make money.”- Doesn’t work in a world where women make up the majority of college graduates. There isn’t meaningful demand for that anymore. She is looking to fulfill her other needs.

“Just talk to her bro.”- Probably the biggest casualty. If she wanted to talk to men like you she would be on Bumble. If she was on Bumble and wanted to talk to you, then she would have swiped right. If she swiped right on you, you would have matched. You didn’t match, therefore she doesn’t want to talk to you. Q.E.D. “Well maybe she’s not on dating apps because she doesn’t want to wade through all the shit?” If you can’t get matches on a dating app, guess what? You’re the shit.

Owning one wouldn’t. Wearing one in public in the year of our Lord 2022 would

Yes, but my point is that if she does not have a dating app profile, OR if she does have one but did not swipe right, then her revealed preference is that she does not want an average to below average man to come up and talk with her

Honestly, as stupid as it seems, it’s probably best for people in certain careers or social situations to never have those particular semantic synapses fire. The consequences for misspeaking are too bad. If I had a public sector job I would probably refrain from even mentally pronouncing the syllables.

What exactly is Alex Jones being held liable for here? Did he say that people were crisis actors, or only imply it? I never see any relevant quotes in these articles.

Does Jones have grounds to appeal? Snyder v Phelps seems like one avenue. Sandy Hook might be considered a matter of public concern given the impact on gun policy discussions it had.

What would be the public benefit in protecting such speech?

The public benefit is that having people like Alex Jones active in media space makes it harder for the government (or private entities for that matter) to state fake tragedies. I can sleep easy knowing that Sandy Hook was real, because if there was good evidence it was fake Alex Jones would have found it.

Twitter won't be removed for the same reason Fox News is still on every major cable package. It isn't some minor service, its the primary use case for the smart phone for tons of people.
