Moved to its own comment due to character count limitations.

it's your site just increase it

can you see which rdrama accounts link to motte accounts

If someone's spamming "this is why democrats groom critical race theory" or "nwo covid microchip fears stoked by WHO insider leaker" just delete them instead of nuking the whole thing!

Those who are steadfast in their principles do not bother justifying it

Cloudflare is a decently sized company - they have a director of public relations, who might want a statement. A statement gives people who aren't sure potential reasons to not hate cloudflare. It also clarifies future moderation policies, which is important. Also, if prince is a committed libertarian, a statement of principles helps convince others to follow those principles too!

moldbug's elves post was about - if the "enemies" control all centers of economic, political, technological, media power - you're not gonna "win" by posting really hard or declaring them enemies or shooting them, you win by converting some of them (construed broadly - maybe you convert some low-highs and then they win, whatever). And given that, it's quite important why they believe things, how that changes, etc. (it's important too even if you're just fighting them, say in a war - knowing when they'll attack, how they'll do it is important - but doubly so like this)

Just arguing that 'making a statement' doesn't imply 'not principled', nothing about whether or not they'd drop kiwifarms.

When there are thousands of people on twitter saying 'groyp anime child hitler' at any given time, if we're just writing autistic essays about trains in either sense, and aren't doxxing anyone, who'll care? Kiwifarms got in a shitfling with keffals, who was motivated, and 'hosted the christchurch video' and had thousands of mentally unstable people very mad at it to use as ammo. I can't see anyone caring at all.

I'm not saying they're committed and pure libertarians, just that why would not making a post make them less likely to compromise? "not make libertarian post, still drop them" is also plausible.

yeah i should've incluced "dont use an irl email or shared password". the signup page should probably have that like kiwi does

Most open source packages are pretty safe, most of the ones that do have issues aren't remotely exploitable, and mostly actual remotely exploitable vulnerabilities that aren't widely known and immediately fixed are only known to a few well-financed organizations that have much bigger fish to fry than our little site.

this isn't really accurate in spirit (except the last bit). "most packages are safe" is true in the sense that the termcolors package probably is safe (aside from supply chain / github / npm attacks, because termcolors can use network and filesystem just like express, but separate issue), but it's also vacuous. most issues aren't exploitable too, but again, vacuous. most exploitable vulnerabilities that are widely known are fixed quickly - although see “ This issue was initially discovered in 2016 by a RedHat kernel developer and disclosed in a public email thread, but the Linux kernel community did not patch the issue until it was re-reported in 2021.” from HN frontpage for a funny counterexample. Unfortunately, there are just so many vulnerabilities discovered and used that it's little comfort, and breaches happen constantly. also, the rdrama codebase is not audited frequently for security, and probably has its own flaws.

Of course it's true that nobody cares about our site so nothing will happen probably. its just interesting to work out the details.

The fact that they haven't been hacked yet is a good sign

i'm not sure rdrama would notice. do they have good logging and monitoring? probably not?

IPs aren't very easy to resolve to people

true, and the biggest defense we have is that there's just not much to breach (nobody has their real names like gab) but having your ip does make it much easier to track someone down just because of location, so i'd rather nobody have them.

it's a copy of the reddit feature to send someone a wholesome validation mental health support / suicide hotline phone number, to use as a joke. from the rdrama codebase. doesn't matter

yeah i realized it did and edited my post to remove that, but apparently i forgot to hit save

how are these divisions worse than those during the civil war? or reconstruction? or the gilded age? prohibition? this? Active, violent conflict between unions and bosses?

Divisions have been here for ages, and the current divisions seem much less bad than the past ones. All the trump and dems still do their jobs, and the economy still advances rapidly. it's not going anywhere!

I dont wanna leak too much but we got some guys specifically for security shit and they legitimately could be from some 3 letter agency, its pretty crazy

Imagine you're talking to someone and they say - "my homie's a cop, he's like from CSI with all their gadgets and shit, he knows what's up". That ... probably doesn't indicate the homie's a good cop, at all, more that the speaker doesn't really know what they're talking about. Same for "could be from some 3 letter agency", that just isn't a sign of good security at all, on the part of the speaker. obviously it doesn't say anything negative about the security team, just that you wouldnt know either way.

Eh. googling 'flask RCE' shows a few.

And web servers regularly get owned by leaving API keys open, configuring something wrong, too. Maybe you use azure, and the part of azure you're using is broken. maybe your web server is perfect but your cloudflare password is 'marseeeeeey2' without 2fa and you get owned that way.

But it seems unlikely enough that there's anything serious that I'm not actively worrying about it.

I guarantee someone sufficiently motivated could be inside rdrama in a week or two. But I highly doubt anyone is.

It's like you guys intentionally wanted to preclude people from attempting to have fun

yeah, no shit, this is a site for writing essays about the costs of hospital insurance or 5000 words on how the wokes are taking over movies (grr), people dont want heckin valid images in their essays. same for image uploads

Can you fix the css and reduce all the spacing? I have a massive monitor, and on the most zoomed-out zoom settings, there are ~ 5 short comments total on my screen.

Newton was 'addicted' to grand theories, too! "Of an estimated ten million words of writing in Newton's papers, about one million deal with alchemy". Also a religious heretic, believing all sorts of random christian things.

Grand theories are fine, if they're true. If they're not, the problem isn't that they're "grand theoriesl", just that they're untrue. Read some science, history (although the former - physics, chem, bio, etc - is more uniformly reliable than the second), speak to/read from all sorts of people, and come up with the useful ones!

they deleted their account. Was ame deisach? just tell them on acx/dsl if so

you can override main.css's !importants by giving your rules higher css precedences and also !important iirc. you can beat .comment .comment-body .comment-text with something like .. comment .comment-body .comment-text

the update from kiwifarms - "In my life, there is a family emergency. It has absolutely nothing to do with the forum drama. I cannot and will not elaborate further. There will be a week or more where I am completely unavailable and it is likely the site will go down during this time where I will not be able to bring it up."

"We have one host and I am looking at two more. It is likely that the host will give up too. The two hosts confident they can handle the Kiwi Farms are probably wrong. DDoS-Guard was confident they could handle the Kiwi Farms and said "bring it on" for less than 24 hours."

There isn't any good evidence cloudflare's dropping them was just caused by the claimed false flag post - just bc it was going around on twitter doesn't mean it's the sole cause. There were likely many other comments in the thread that bordered on illegal activity, or seemed so to cloudflare. Kiwi should've aggressively moderated them, for the moment, just strategically. Temporarily killing the keffals thread, while a potentially more effective mitigation, would strike at the heart of kiwifarms' laughing at lolcows/drama purpose - but more aggressive moderation to save the entire thing would have probably been a good move. Not that it would've saved them, maybe just given it a few more days - but for the small chance it did, they should've wordfiltered 'bomb' or something. (this isn't about whether the speech is harmful, rdrama/kiwi policy is fine, please don't accuse me of being a lib for the 50th time, not interesting discussion)

Empires, nations, countries, and large entities "kowtow to their enemies" in specific ways all the time, strategically, for success. Whether as a trick or just to reduce likelihood of death. Every historical figure we see as masculine or honorable or powerful did things to appease others constantly. They also took action to slaughter their enemies, hear the lamentations of their women, etc - and often more latter than former (or often the reverse) - but refusing to make any concessions, even if they help you win overall, is very stupid and means you lose.

Kiwifarms' actions are already constrained in a million ways by conventional morality, the state, and what hosting platforms are allowed to do. So are yours, so are mine, so are everyone's, it will always be "how constrained, and in what way", not "unconstrained". For instance, Josh can't even enter a gentlemen's duel with Prince - extremely dishonorable! Nor can they - legally - break into keffals' internet accounts and get stuff (despite some members either doing so or reporting so on the forum). And they would do the latter a lot more if they could. They already censor dox, putting it behind a login-to-view box - already kowtowing! And they already submit to their enemies in practice by being subject to the "Cathedral" - as josh named in the post - 's legal system, economic system, and society. Staking a post in some minor, specific subconflict that happens to be particularly obvious at the moment is just a strategic error.

kiwifarms.net says: Due to an imminent and emergency threat to human life, the content of this site is blocked from being accessed through Cloudflare’s infrastructure. For more details, please see: https://blog.cloudflare.com/kiwifarms-blocked/

Likely, the causes were both internal and external pressure and specific, recent posts on kiwifarms or elsewhere that cloudflare interpreted to be an "imminent and emergency threat to human life". Kiwifarms should have attempted to reduce outward signs of the latter to keep their site up. It might - or even probably wouldn't - have worked, but is worth doing anyway.

Kiwifarms has no ability to threaten or harm Cloudflare

Some users might argue otherwise - "we're spreading the truth, how disgusting the libs are, they can't let people see it because the regime would collapse". Most kiwis aren't there, it really is just a site for laughing at freaks, but there were a few posts to that effect that got a bunch of positive reactions. Ofc this is ... not entirely wrong, but wrong in every important way there's probably some impact of kiwifarms existing, but not in any simple way like that.

The only right move is to refuse to heel and find someone else

Yeah, if they had somewhere else to go. Josh isn't optimistic, as the recent t.me post shows. "refusing to heel", and having CF take away your site, is still losing. It's much, much worse for both 'laughing at lolcows' and 'spreading how disgusting trans grooming is' than wordfiltering the word 'bomb'.

Kiwifarms has taken hundreds of actions exactly like 'censoring a bit more to survive' over the past decade. Claiming this one is dishonorable ... it's a website for laughing at lolcows. If a bull running at you, you should move out of the way, whether you can shoot it later or not.

"Finding a gun to shoot the bull with" and "not moving out of the way" aren't the same action, at all. The latter doesn't help you win. Just because some meekly let the bull rampage - the answer isn't "letting it hit you in the chest".

yeah - "exploring mental disability in novel form is never done" is just wrong. Hate this kind of article, but a lot of popular books explore mental disability

Even the lives of ordinary people are largely unexplored, because ordinary people do not write novels, and professional writers have trouble writing ordinary characters. It is easier to create a clown or a buffoon than it is to write an accurate depiction of a person with slightly below average intelligence

the popular, if not necessarily most popular (lol yud) stories on fanfiction.net or wattpad are ... clearly written by ordinary people. Now, they may not explore the lives of ordinary people in a deep or illuminating way for that reason. Many ordinary people also try to write novels and fail to sell them - and are the writers popular romance novels like these really that intelligent?

Cloudflare wants them gone, and is committed to their existential termination

This doesn't make sense given the way cloudflare acted. Probably Prince genuinely wanted to keep them, and chose to ban them for a variety of complicated (this does not imply good) reasons. I'm suggesting there were ways to influence the contingencies such that kiwi might've survived longer. The long article about "why we wouldn't refuse services" and then immediately after banning for supposed extreme risk isn't compatible with cloudflare "wanting them gone, certainly, entirely", because ... of how long prince kept them when most other companies wouldn't have. they could've just kicked kiwifarms years ago, there've been several such campaigns in the past. Again, this doesn't mean they wouldn't have anyway in practice, no matter what they did, i'm not sure tbh.

Groveling is always the wrong move, even if they can find no other refuge.

can you clarify the context in which you argue this? Groveling is a very useful move for people, organizations, even nations, and has saved many from death - which is why it exists. And "temporarily banning certain words in the thread" (and - not even telling anyone you're doing that) is not groveling in any obvious sense.

It's a collection of thinking, reasoned sadists, who want Kiwifarms gone but more than that want Kiwifarms humiliated and broken

this doesn't make sense at all. cloudflare kept kiwifarms up until a large social media campaign to drop them. and ... "sadists"? what? how are they sadists? "humiliated and broken"?

Even if the libs/cathedral/etc are your mortal enemy in every possible way, that doesn't mean they are "sadists" and "want to humiliate cloudflare in every way because they are sadists".
