I think you are getting great discourse here but one of the biggest things I have realized is that many of these people are simply quite miserable. I don't mean that is a point finger snarky way but in a way if you look at their comment and post history it clearly shows some very disturbing/sad things going on in their life.
One of the worst things reddit did in my opinion was allow people to hide their post and comment history. I cannot tell you how many times I would be shocked why someone was being so rude and snarky and check their posting and comment history and then being like "oh wow that explains it."
