This is tangential, but this is why when people say things like "China is smart, they won't just start a war over Taiwan." I laugh. Systems with high power individuals at the top run at the behest of that individual, and this is much more true or China than America. If Russia was smart they would've waited out Ukraine to hollow out demographically and become complacent, but Russia isn't in charge, Putin is and Putin wants to be remembered as the guy who reunited greater Russia.
