Damn, I would hate it if I had to give it up altogether. The acidity being a problem would rule out even crappy decaf! Very raw deal. Everyone tells me that a similar thing will happen to me and my love of spicy food as I grow old, but I hope not.
Dude nice! Southeast Asia is probably one of the most intriguing areas of the world for me. One of the better non-Western country choices, if you ask me. Seems like Malay isn't too hard to learn either, for a non-Indo-European language, and a lot of people speak it.
You guys like coffee? I love coffee. I'm not so into it that I have a grinder or anything, but it's almost every day that I drink some at work. I drink it black.
The problem is that I might love it too much. I get a little paranoid that I'm consuming too much caffeine. And maybe I'd sleep better if I didn't overdo it. You guys got any favorite decaf brands? So far, I've tried a total of one decaf coffee, Beaumont from Aldi. It was noticeably less good than regular coffee, and I needed to put quite a bit more grounds in it to match my usual taste, but overall, not bad. I hope some of you can report that you've tried one that's better than "not bad", but who knows.
I actually missed the The Princess Bride reference! I have watched the movie, and I like it, but it was quite a while ago now.
I realize, reading what you say, that I already knew that life is a vast smorgasbord of emotions. I didn't realize until now that I was quite focused on the negatives of life for at least a month now. I think what made me understand was my reaction to @roche's comment ("but that's all effort, which seems impossible; I just want to live without doing anything"). Which is something I've experienced before, but it really crept up on me this time. I can concede my brain just isn't in the right state of mind to make any solid decisions on the kid thing.
That's all pretty bad, and I'm sorry to hear about it.
How do you plan on turning this year around, considering all those things? What kinds of strategies are you looking at? In short, what is the list of problems you will face and what are your solutions for solving these?
Perhaps the solutions themselves don't even really matter, and it's just the will to solve them that matters, and you've definitely shown a resolve to move forward in this post.
Life is pain, anyone tells you different is selling something
This gets at the heart of something I've been thinking about lately. As much as this forum advocates for people to have kids, I wonder why anyone would think it a good idea to do so, considering this fact. You're right. Life is pain. So why bring more in? Especially from a non-religious perspective, as I have unfortunately lost my faith entirely.
Maybe I'll ask more about this later, but I kind of dislike the idea that I would be furthering the downer feeling of these threads.
I feel like I'm pretty close to beating it, so I guess I'll see. Shows how out of touch I am... in high school I was very into Hotline Miami, and this is definitely in the same vein, so I should have already played this years ago. Even the story feels similarly adult (dunno everyone else's opinions but I actually liked Hotline Miami 2's story, the writing gave people their own voices and made them talk like normal people might). What a cool sci-fi concept it is, and the dialogue system is great.
I didn't know about any of that before buying it, just that it was an action game with a good OST that I discovered by looking up "hotline miami mix" on YouTube.
Playing Katana Zero when I get a chance; very fun, and surprisingly the story so far is really engaging. I have heard it ends on a cliffhanger, but that's okay, that's a problem for future me.
Are PCs or PC parts expensive in India? I would have thought it would be quite a bigger statement to get a PC in India rather than America.
Also do you get regional pricing from Steam? Probably not from GOG?
The whole thing that makes this question interesting is if it's not close range and the knife guy has to close the distance. That's the prompt we're both working with, right? If the Batter has any tactical sense whatsoever, you're not going to get bitch swings, you're gonna buy a mega swing no matter what you do if you approach him. I kind of lean towards RenOS's take here that the knife guy has the advantage here, tanks a broken arm, and guts Little League like a fish.
I am having trouble picturing you grabbing a bat hit from someone trying to kill you without it going very poorly for you. Unless that's the circumstance in which you were grabbing bats, in which case, props to you, I guess.
Now imagine the hollow bat is heavy and has a lot of velocity behind it. "Your palms and wrists will see better days" is an understatement. Probably would break something trying to catch a swinging bat. Now try holding onto the bat with a broken wrist and/or fingers. Prying seems out of the question entirely. And bodies aren't closed systems; the knife guy's performance will be affected all around by having an inoperable, painful hand.
That's not to say I'm Team Bat. It just seems like you've overlooked a lot of variables here. Catching a bat is a bad idea, especially if one hand is already holding a knife. And you're dead if you let go of the knife. You will be promptly Hotline Miami'd.
Can you give some examples of things the developers might be made liable for and that they should not be liable for?
Why would transparency be a bad thing here? If the developers are doing something that could expose them to liability if it came out, shouldn't it come out?
I don't post much here in general but I have to say, like many things on The Motte, your Transnational Thursdays are like nothing else I've seen on the internet. I love reading about foreign affairs, and a lot of these countries, you just don't hear about them except for these threads.
If you want to take a break or quit entirely, by all means, go for it. I would just be interested in where you got all the material for your posts in the first place.
What the hell does PMC mean? HBD was easy enough to google but no idea what this PMC thing is and I've seen it in multiple threads now.
For a user as prolific as she was, I don't know who you expect to fool other than new, clueless people. For everyone else it's only a matter of time until they notice who it was, and an annoyance until they do, if they see this thread.
What is Tracing Woodgrains's opinion on Rittenhouse? Can you link that please?
Venezuela, Haiti, and arguably Mexico are failed states
Venezuela and Haiti, I can definitely see. But I used to see Mexico always brought up as "doing decently" for Latin American standards. Why do you say it's arguably a failed state?
This is great advice.
Finding and maintaining friendships has to be a full time priority (and keep a strong preference for IRL friends over virtual friends).
I know this is an age old question. But where do you find friends? If you feel comfortable, can you tell me where you, specifically, found friends? I've got some great friends online, but in real life, not too many pickings; I don't do much other than work and go home and practice a hobby or two, though it helps that I am friends with my boss and my family.
Yeah, I totally get it. And I like your writeup. I guess I am surprised there exist women in India that hold basically the same views as a progressive American college student. Personally I live in a ban state right now (Illinois's PICA went into effect January 1st) so I'm trying to learn to appreciate the other stuff. No restrictions on (pump) shotguns, bolt actions, SKSes without detachable mags, pistols without threaded barrels or magazine capacity over 15 rounds, etc, etc. I hope you figure something out. I'd help you get here if I could, way better to have someone like you that actually likes the country than the throngs of suburbanites who hate it.
Alternatively, see if you can get into the Czech Republic. I'm sure it has a lot of the same downsides most of Europe has, but at least they share our gun culture.
I don't know what the gun laws are in India, but I appreciate your lust for our gun laws. They're pretty cool. That being said, you can own some guns in the UK. I know shotguns are pretty easy to get, and I think you can convince the government to let you have a .22 for target shooting. It's not as bad as a lot of countries that will let you have nothing at all, save for airsoft.
I wish I had some advice for you on your doctor thing. Becoming a doctor is a lot of work and it's extremely hard to justify throwing away so many years after you don't like it/it doesn't get you where you want to go. I would wonder if you could maybe get citizenship in the UK as a doctor for some years and then work on transitioning to something else. Getting citizenship in the US would probably be easier from the UK, as well.
Flattery will get you nowhere! I see you buying this overpriced shit every day! You're better than this! Stop making such a damn mess! Don't let your kids do that! Get better taste in food! Lose some weight! Good God, don't wear that in here! No pets allowed! For fuck's sake, don't park in the fuel bay if you're going to go gamble for an hour! Does this look like a grocery store? Is that why you're buying over $100 worth of this brand name garbage on food stamps? Maybe you could tell me when you spill gasoline all over the ground? For that matter, maybe you could stop blowing up my bathrooms over and over again? No, we don't make sandwiches anymore! Stop asking! We're closed!
Dude, I love DIY sushi. The first day I ordered takeout sushi I found out that it was like $10 for even a simple roll and thought "there's no way this shit costs that much to make". I've found some pretty simple salmon rolls (I cook the salmon, I'm no sushi chef) are pretty damn awesome for the extremely minimal effort put in. Only recently did I discover that we should have been packing in dramatically more rice than we were. To that end we've started cooking 4 cups of rice instead of 2, though we use medium grain rice to save some money. I use this sushi rice recipe. Also if your avocados are perfectly ripe, the more you put in a roll, the better it gets. Generally I try to not put any eel sauce or spicy sriracha on at least the first few rolls I make; I typically like to dunk about 25% of the piece I am eating in soy sauce. I also like shichimi togarashi or sesame seeds on mine.
I feel like your recipes are significantly more adventurous than most Americans are in the kitchen. Those seem like somewhat complicated recipes too, so I don't think I'd describe you as being bad at cooking if you made even half of those. If you really are bad at cooking, my condolences!
Good choice. I also had a hankering for chili. That's partially because it's so cheap to make. I like to make a lot so it lasts for a long time, though, and this weekend we've got a couple other dinner plans for the house, so I guess I'll wait til next week to make it. The last one we made was one of my favorites, I threw in a can of chipotles en adobo and some chorizo and it turned out very well.
I think I'm the same as you. Every time I cook something, especially if it's for the whole house, I can name at least one thing I should have done differently, even if it's a dish I have a lot of experience making. There's always something to improve.
No! Liquor is the wrong comparison! The right comparison is the huge amount of craft beer stouts that get made. I have tried many of these with many different subtleties. Almost all of them are bitter. But some of them are tastier than others. One of them may have some little banana taste in it. Or one tastes like chocolate. Or maybe it's just some uniquely nice bitter taste. Well, okay, I guess liquor is an okay comparison. They're both "acquired tastes". After you drink enough liquor you learn to put aside the taste of the alcohol and actually tasting the rest of it. Maybe something similar happens with coffee. I know someone who is very particular about the coffee he uses, even though he uses cream and sugar he needs his fancy stuff otherwise it doesn't taste good enough. I've tried the same coffee he likes, except black, and I have to admit, it's pretty nice. How dare you say these things about me and my fellow coffee drinkers!! You've ruined this thread!
MathWizard is right, coffee flavored stuff is good too. I'm a big fan of coffee ice cream. I probably wouldn't drink very much alcohol if I didn't like the coffee flavor that stouts have.
