The open internet is dead.

It's dead because all frontiers get colonized and cease to become so. There are several components to this. Part of it is natural centralization (reddit really was more convenient than membership in sixteen forums), part is the Eternal September brought on by smartphones taking the average internet user's literacy down a few standard deviations, and part is commercial considerations - naturally the guys who want to make money are going to be much better (even if just from a natural selection point of view) at figuring out how to onboard users compared to the guy who runs Niche Forum 15.

Discoverability is basically dead because everyone is on a few big sites, there's no world where you create a new popular way to interact by scratch.

No one service or idea is going to reverse or even slow this trend.

Especially as bots become more and more convincing, the most realistic path forward to me is rather to devolve into small communities (usually Discord at this stage, but likely migrating from platform to platform over time) where social proof serves in place of other metrics, and communities remain of sufficiently small size you can know the people there and hence have confidence in their humanity.

This is not a particularly good solution compared to what I'd like, but it's realistic.

Was this meant to be in reply to something else? I can't quite see how this fits the above post.
