I don't find this video particularly clarifying.

I found clarifying against the "she didn't even hit him/it was just a nudge" arguments. Helluva 'nudge.'

Otherwise agreed, and the people making those arguments aren't going to change for the reasons you mention.

I have no reason to think she was anything but a normal, well-adjusted person

Going to a 'protest' to blockade government activity is not the action of a normal, well-adjusted person. You may think it's a good thing! Necessary, maybe even sacred, whatever. But not normal and well-adjusted.

Honestly I find it pretty ludicrous to imagine that this situation would have ended up with someone dead if the agents had behaved like normal well-trained cops

Situation much like this one have happened possibly dozens of times, maybe hundreds or thousands if we broaden the category, over the last 10 years in this country, and very few of them end this way. It's less about the specific training (even if it was inadequate) and that every such interaction is rolling a handful of D20s: how does the subject react, how does the officer react, what are the environmental factors making them react better/worse, etc. This encounter rolled too many 1s.

If you expect perfection in every single encounter, you are not living in reality.

Likewise, living in Minneapolis, the victim of this tragedy was not living in reality.

As with most things about this administration, it's an overcorrection from Trump 1 and Biden.

see why American riot police don't use water cannons

They did at Standing Rock, and it's not clear to me why that was the odd exception, unless whoever was in charge of the police thought it was funny (one can imagine: "they want the water? We'll give them the water, alright!")

To release some kind of statement, say his heart is with the kids and the widow. Which AFAIK he hasn't.

You only release a statement if you want to be eaten alive by leopards.

While ICE training seems to be questionable, I am reasonable sure there's a lawyer, administrator, or chief that strongly informed him "GOOD GOD DON'T SAY ANYTHING TO ANYONE ABOUT ANYTHING!"

And he loses still further sympathy points if it was him who said

slightly fascinated about how much attention this comment has gotten. Surely there's a good descriptor for the way certain insults are perceived as worse than rape or murder.

Do you think he's actually confused about the legality of hitting police officers with your car?

There's a non-zero chance they believe protestors are a protected class with extreme leniency, that well could include a grey area around "you can hit cops if you don't intend to kill them," but I'm not familiar enough with op to be confident in that.

Additionally, I'm not sure this is true. Her car had Missouri plates.

Seems to be she'd lived in Minneapolis for a while (multiple months iirc) and hadn't changed plates. I can't complain about that, I delayed changing plates quite a while to not pay new state taxes.

adds auto sorting stuff

That's what I've been missing on console :( Godmode and a sorting mod!

Ooo that does look fun!

Finally got around to repairing and modding a japanese new 3ds ll! Took a little wrestling with google translate to get through the menus (I was too stupid to realize I could just... mirror most of the steps on my English one that I didn't want to mod) but overall pretty easy. Felt very nostalgic to crank up a new save of Pokemon Ultra Sun, but now with the ability to mod the save file directly and make my Rowlet shiny.

Also downloaded more games to it than i'll play in the next 10 years. After Sun, probably one of the Fire Emblem Games?

Also bought the Final Fantasy 1-6 (iirc?) collection cartridge for switch when it was on sale. Also on the "get around to it eventually" list.

Any favorite mod recommendations? Been thinking about getting a computer just powerful enough for modded Skyrim.

Would you be willing to bite the FAFO pill on the Jan 6th rioter

Yes, and both are downstream of the same problem: we've developed a culture where 'protestors' are allowed to do almost anything and expect no reaction or meaningful punishment... until they meet the one person that reacts.

Several years back there was some right-wing woman that ran a blog and realized this particular (smaller-scale) fraud. Sign up with the other SAHM down the street, "officially" you take care of the other person's baby but the state never checked, and get a nice payout for doing what you were going to do for free.

Wish I could remember her name and track that down. Alas.

I work in forensics and I'm the odd man out in more ways than one, so I find it way too close to my day job. But that's just personal annoyance. More generally I think it's perverse to keep relitigating and finding entertainment in an actual person's untimely demise.

Are trans men wildly overrepresented at riots?

(I legitimately don't know the answer to this. Testosterone is a hell of a drug.)

Wildly overrepresented in the presumed-XXs committing terrorism and mass shootings rate, but that base rate is vanishingly small, so "wildly overrepresented" still means something like less than ten events total in the US.

Probably, anyways, statistics on these topic are pretty iffy.

This loses you the moral high ground

How so?

Have you read Howard Thurman? I think his brand of nonviolence and his take on the "hounds of Hell" might interest you.

some gang of true crime wine moms

Right, we're true crime beer dads.

(Jokes aside, I hate true crime and the whole phenomenon)

it does feel like he'll eventually accidentally kick the wrong group in the shins and get absolutely nuked.

I got tired of his nonsense making the rounds and muted his account on twitter, but I suspect that even if he's sincere, he seemed pretty good at toeing the line of not kicking the wrong way. Which is kind of... darkly amusing that bestiality is acceptable edgelordism in a way that, say, crime stats aren't, but so goes culture!

The entire comment is incoherent, which could easily be from a weak writer, but feels suspiciously like copypasta from ai here.

Yeah, it's got the elements of a comment that could make sense, but doesn't really cohere and has a few significant signals. I'm not opposed to someone touching up with AI or using it for a bit of analytical assistance, but this particular one doesn't really pass muster.

Privilege, in the woke sense?

Americans have a tendency to be provincial at the best of times, but drawing a meaningful distinction on topics like speech and social media? And there are times the UK is still beholden to various agreements like the ECHR- it's not like the UK is radically disconnected from the EU, especially to an outsider, regardless of their "traditions."

For example, did you know that neither Scotland nor the UK are actually in the EU?

If anything the UK is considerably worse on speech than the EU, though yes in ways distinct from OP's conversation-starter with the EU-levied fine. The UK is still under the ECHR and probably another half-dozen or so overlapping agreements besides.

The reactions aren't principled—they’re distasteful.

Hmm.

who wants to wax their chest

That does sound quite unpleasant!

They'll ask "How did you discover all this"

One assumes something obvious like an interview question along the lines of "what's with this ten-year gap in your resume" or "oh, you were an actress, did you star in anything popular?"

Our culture is extremely sexually immoral

Bonnie is in the UK, where the particular forms of extreme sexual immorality take quite a different form, as does the prudishness. Do you think the government would take her side if she tried to become a nurse or teacher and a customer or parent complained?

There's probably any number of roughly-anonymous, behind-the-scenes type jobs she could take if need be, but I am skeptical she would have much success finding a public-facing, non-porn-adjacent job.
