Small-Scale Question Sunday for June 14, 2026

Do you have a dumb question that you're kind of embarrassed to ask in the main thread? Is there something you're just not sure about?

This is your opportunity to ask questions. No question too simple or too silly.

Culture war topics are accepted, and proposals for a better intro post are appreciated.

More than any 4th of July that I can remember.

I mean, isn't it your country's 250th year celebration as well? I've visited the US a few weeks ago and companies seem to have been taking that excuse to put out american flag branded merch everywhere. Add to that a high profile international sports competition, and I'm not surprised to see some uptick of patriotism. The non-brainwormed democrat and centrists probably also likely understand that it's their only chance to celebrate that big a birthday for the next 50 years, so they're less likely to let "not liking the current administration" ruin it for them than if it was any old 4th of July that happens every year.

Part of this is simply that the 4th of July is coming up in general. Patriotic merch starts going up in US retail in May every year, like clockwork, and there’s always a lot of it.

There may be something different about this year due to the anniversary, but retail looks about the same to me on the patriotic front.

Outside I don't hear much enthusiasm to celebrate 250th because Trump, etc. I also don't hear a lot of "It's our country, too" verbalized, which was the ancient permissive signal to okay patriotism. Maybe there is silent consensus that it is okay. A nice change of pace.
