This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.
Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.
We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:
-
Shaming.
-
Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.
-
Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.
-
Recruiting for a cause.
-
Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.
In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:
-
Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.
-
Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.
-
Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.
-
Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.
On an ad hoc basis, the mods will try to compile a list of the best posts/comments from the previous week, posted in Quality Contribution threads and archived at /r/TheThread. You may nominate a comment for this list by clicking on 'report' at the bottom of the post and typing 'Actually a quality contribution' as the report reason.

This is basically entirely correct. And I feel very bad for the guys who are too autismal or not experienced enough to get it. You can actually just emulate an entire reddit leftist in your head as easily as your laptop can emulate a gameboy advance (the apolitical normie you meet at the dive bar pool table is much more complex and difficult to emulate than the redditor with his Interests and Hobbies), it's not that much processing power, they're not exactly ClaudeGPT Grokopus 69.420 one zillion parameters, they're just basically normal people who are a standard deviation dumber than the average motteposter trying to do what they feel is socially expected of them to be good. They want to be good people. Their rules of being a Good Person are not particularly difficult to understand, emulate, and manipulate, and if you consider yourself a right-winger this should be table stakes to show your face in public alongside not being fat and knowing how a sport jacket should fit.
Mind giving a 100% specific example of putting up these table stakes re: the demand for allowing (perhaps unjust, as perceived) correction from the leftists?
It's not possible online. You don't have any leverage over some pseudonym on reddit, especially when you're in their space.
In real life, however, it's mostly about delivery. If you can signal (through body language, tone of voice, physical appearance) that you're confident and unthreatened, it's typically not hard to stand up for yourself and stake out an unpopular position without being ostracized. The most important thing to understand is that it's not about being right or wrong--it's about status. If you look like you care too much, or you're itching for a fight, or you come across as defensive, you're cooked. The trick in group settings is subtly baiting your interlocutor into getting ranty, then letting them win while remaining cool and slightly aloof, trying to steer the conversation back to something uncontroversial. Then you let female disapproval of spergy male political arguments do the rest of your work for you. You want to make sure that you're always positioning yourself between the person you're arguing with and the normies on the sideline, so that when the normies inevitably get bored of your stupid argument, you get to be the one who "saves" everyone from the awkwardness.
When in doubt, yeschad and deflect is always a better response than a passionate rebuttal. Never be defensive; always be the "agree to disagree, who needs another drink?" guy. Never be the most political guy in the room.
