Good post, got a strong resonance in me

I can only recommend to get over that feeling, especially because you can enjoy live music the way you describe here. Sure, it's even better in good company, but going through it alone is well worth the time/money/potential awkwardness. I've long made peace with the fact that my taste in music is... exotic, so I almost always go alone nowadays. There's also advantages. I can fight my way into first row if I want to. I can mosh for two hours if I want to. Or I can just chill in front of the mixer. And nobody to interrupt that zen flow state if the show is good...

Niche metal bands play in small venues. These venues are the only good way to listen to live amplified music. The speakers are sufficient to fill the space without distorting. The deleterious effect of the relatively slow speed of sound is not as noticeable in a small space. And the audience is typically much better: they are there because they are true fans and not to show off on instagram. Small venues also get loud. Hearing protection is a must to avoid permanent damage.

Very true. I often regret not having cought today's juggernauts before they hit mass appeal. I'm a Maynard James Keenan fan boy, and live I enjoy A Perfect Circle and Puscifer so much more than Tool just because of that.

What is this place?

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
