Do you think there are any meaningful alternatives? I have considered self-hosting, but that could result in even fewer eyes than Substack. At least on Substack, wandering eyes could stumble upon a low-popularity page with enough time and algorithmic noise. I am not even particularly concerned about money - there's just something appealing about having a readership that you can engage in dialogue with your ideas or experiences. High-volume, low-stakes, easily accessible writing that can be commented upon seems to me to be the best way to iterate and improve one's writing skills, rather than slaving away on a novel or a similarly-cloistered writing project.

Study the notes on Substack that get picked up by the algorithm. They're highly artificial and they take a fare bit of skill to craft, but they'll get you large numbers of page views. KulakRevolt manages them regularly. I've managed a few myself. Also important for traffic are front facing materials like cover images, titles, even your Substack's name. In order to get people to stick around, your writing has to actually be good, your authorial personality and overall concept need to be good, but there are achievable mechanisms for driving the raw baseline of traffic you need in the first place.

Blegh, I forgot about Substack notes. I think you're correct, though. As an aside, it's unfortunate that creatives can't just create, they now have to advertise, market, and distribute. I wish we could revitalize the publishing industry (or at least whatever romantic facsimile I hold of the publishing industry) so they could handle all the chaff.

What is this place?

This website is a place for people who want to move past shady thinking and test their ideas in a court of people who don't all share the same biases. Our goal is to optimize for light, not heat; this is a group effort, and all commentators are asked to do their part.

The weekly Culture War threads host the most controversial topics and are the most visible aspect of The Motte. However, many other topics are appropriate here. We encourage people to post anything related to science, politics, or philosophy; if in doubt, post!

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
