Have any of you tried feeding a list of your favorite songs to ChatGPT / Claude and have it analyze your music taste?

I've long been bothered by Spotify's utter garbage recommendations, so I sent my 500 track 80s playlist to ChatGPT and had a long conversation with it about other examples I like and don't like. The result is frankly eerily accurate and manages to simultaneously explain my distaste for all post-1996 popular music and how Kraftwerk, trad Irish music, 80s pop and mid 90s Eurodance all fit neatly and consistently under the same "me like"-umbrella.

I haven't gotten any good recommendations.

It really really varies what you like. Personally the best place to find new music is on SoundCloud and basically see who the artists you like are listening to, because usually there's some overlap with what they do. And then just repeat until the end of time.

I also tend to search Desuarchive which is an archive site for 4chan's /mu/ board. 4chan itself is complete trash, but I've found a lot of nice recs by searching for a specific album and seeing what else is posted alongside it. But /mu/ has a certain taste, so it doesn't always match up.

Algorithms are hit or miss, I've had some great recs on YouTube and SoundCloud, but AI had been garbage.

What is this place?

This website is a place for people who want to move past shady thinking and test their ideas in a court of people who don't all share the same biases. Our goal is to optimize for light, not heat; this is a group effort, and all commentators are asked to do their part.

The weekly Culture War threads host the most controversial topics and are the most visible aspect of The Motte. However, many other topics are appropriate here. We encourage people to post anything related to science, politics, or philosophy; if in doubt, post!

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
