I don't think anything in that article is inconsistent with my claim that things got an order of magnitude worse after 1997. J'accuse identifies a lot of cases with single-figure numbers of victims going back to the 1950's, but nothing on the scale of Rotherham or Telford.

His day job was mostly medical research and teaching. Wasn't unsuccessful at it, quite well regarded. Became a full professor eventually. (it's a bigger deal/more rare in eastern Europe than in US) Personally I think he wasn't (when younger) as scatter-brained as he pretended to be and used it as an excuse.

The funny thing is that the area in the article isn't even a food desert. There are multiple other grocery stores within 1 mile, and also in heavily black areas.

I’m not sure and I’m not sure how much of an honest answer to the question simply because no academic is free to say anything nice about the nation and era that’s seen as demonic. It would be like asking a 16th century academic in Catholic ruled parts of Europe to describe John Calvin’s Geneva. Saying anything good about it, no matter how true or even obvious is, is going to get you n so much trouble that no one would dare.

Yeah, this is going to be relatively humble "Fuck You" money. The longer before I have to tell someone "Fuck You", the larger the pile grows. Maybe it could handle being cut in half ala divorce at a certain point. For the psychotic violent asshole problem I moved to a conservative area with strong self defense policies and 2a right.
But end of the day, you can't stop all bad things from happening. Whatever happens the "Fuck You" money will hopefully cushion the blow if it can't stop it.

Being able to say fuck you to any given job or walk away from any situation where they treat you unfairly is truly powerful.
But its always the thing you didn't expect coming in from the angle you weren't guarding that gets you.
Divorce, or credible accusation of criminal conduct, or randomly getting on the bad side of some psychotic, violent asshole are hard to ward off just with "fuck you" money.
I'm in an intermediate stage, I'm aggressively paying down (unsecured) debts, and I've got some money saved up to throw towards a big play the second I see one.

Right -- of course the people selling food in 'food deserts' are prioritizing products with high demand in the area. How else could it possibly be? "Hey let's open a market in a heavily-black area but instead of selling them the fresh organic produce they want we'll only offer processed foods." Does anyone think this kind of oppression is actually happening?
Same with reddit's daily complaint threads about how 'the fashion industry' refuses to sell women dresses with pockets. Inevitably someone links an outlet which does offer that but is doing poorly because no one actually wants them.
Or for that matter the 'pink tax' on women's items such as razor blades.
"The products are the same but they charge more for the ones marketed toward women!"
"So if the products are the same, buy the one marketed toward men."
"...No I like the pink one better."
The market is in the business of selling you what you want at a price you find acceptable. There is no conspiracy by rich white men to get in the way of that process.

Produce isn't getting stolen. The underclass doesn't want it and doesn't know anyone who does. There's probably a meat theft problem, but the real reason is that the urban poor just doesn't cook and doesn't want to. There are no grocery stores selling fresh ingredients because nobody would buy them; they buy whatever processed foods and sodas/energy drinks their foodstamps cover, but not raw meat, produce, staples like rice or flour or pasta, dairy. The native underclass eats an atrocious diet of ultraprocessed foods with terrible macros and they won't buy anything else.

For what it's worth, I don't see this phenomenon among certain poorer immigrant groups, like Africans. I was invited to a Ghanian colleague's party recently and there were a lot of vegetables.

My guess is that the NGO running the store is just incompetent- the empty shelves are probably as much about poor stocking/inventory management as they are about shoplifting, otherwise Aldi would be suffering the same problem. Maybe there's also an incompetent pricing system- this seems like a thing progressive NGO's would be bad at.
I do wonder how nearby grocery stores- there are supposedly two of them- are handling shoplifting. I wouldn't expect extralegal justice.

So there are a lot of threads going on with this article, but my take on this is that the store was probably doing okay before 2020, but then Fentanyl Floyd's crime wave absolutely decimated the area.
You can just call it the Floyd crime wave. I think everyone here already knows he was on fentanyl and that there is an argument that it would have killed him regardless of how he was restrained, you don't need to remind us every time you say his name. (Though I'd actually be interested if anyone has ever done a reasonably credible/objective look into that argument, since from what I've seen the trial, mainstream media, and conservative media all seem unreliable.) "Fentanyl Floyd" is approaching "Amerikkka"/"Drumpf"/"Demonrat" levels of nicknames that do nothing besides signal your politics in a way that can easily come across as obnoxious.

An aside, but I still don’t understand this phenomenon either, how he came to be seen by so many people as the image of the “evil right” (as opposed to the “dumb or incompetent right”). My very liberal mom absolutely hates him, almost as much as she hates Trump, and I remember a lot of my lefty friends making offhand comments all through the election about how despicable he was. He’s far from unusual in being pro-life; I can see why pro-choicers hate him but not why they seem to hate him with such passion, or indeed to fear him. Was it just the cat lady comment? I think this image predates that, honestly, but I’m just not sure where it came from or when it started. Was there a particular hit piece or something like that? Maybe it’s his relative youth, it gave the lie to the comforting idea that the right is dying out with the elderly?
Incidentally, my idiosyncratic-but-liberal fiancée actually likes Vance quite a bit, she sees him as flawed but sincerely wanting to help the country. We are Catholic so maybe that helps get over the fear factor, lol. At one point, I think shortly after the VP debate, she even commented— much to my surprise— that she would gladly vote for him over AOC in a hypothetical future election. Although she despises Trump so I’m not sure if he’ll be tainted by association in her mind by the time 2028 rolls around.
