Constructed by Massimiliano Savelli Palombara, the Marquis of Pietraforte, between 1655 and 1681, the Alchemical Gate, also known as the Magic or Hermetic Gate, graces the grounds of the former Villa Palombara. Nestled in Rome's eastern countryside on the Esquiline Hill, this iconic monument now enhances the scenic gardens of the modern-day Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II. Despite being one of five original gates of the Villa Palombara, the Alchemical Gate stands alone, its companions lost to the sands of time. The only trace of their existence is an inscription bearing the date 1680 on the arch of a bygone gate, while sadly, four additional inscriptions within the villa have faded into oblivion.
