Culinary Class Wars on Netflix might be the most fun, if unfair, cooking show I've seen in a long time, and the most nefariously commercial.
Brief synopsis: 20 well known chefs ("white spoons") compete against 80 lesser known chefs ("black spoons") for a USD220K prize. The black spoons are no slouches, largely being restauranteurs themselves with their own successful businesses, but the white spoons are multiyear winners of michelin stars or international awards. The cooking challenges get weird, and something in the Korean editing gets the slow and fast moments right, with surprisingly competent emotional hits. One round in particular, the Infinite Tofu Hell, is honestly the absolute best cooking challenge I've ever seen, in concept and in execution.
The show optimizes for visual flair, dramatic setpiece reveals and novel challenges. Its not mechanically fair, and certain challenges seem introduced to maintain dramatic tension.
In particular, there is a survival challenge, where after an elimination round the losers do a cooking challenge to get advanced regardless. In this round, the contestants must make a dish out of convenience store food. One dish in particular stood out to a ridiculous degree, and makes this Netflix cooking show go from 'fun distraction' to 'mr burns money'.
See, it is inevitable that competent chefs get good bookings at their restaurants following a cooking show blowup. Half these contestants definitely are there just to boost social media, with the USD220K prize pool secondary to yearlong full covers. There are already secondary markets for reservations at the restaurants for the higher profile chefs, with scalpers for their restaurants.
But the real genius is in the convenience store round, moreso than Netflix. Netflix made a deal with a convenience store chain featured to sell dishes created by chefs featured on the show. That's already a good enough gimmick, and certainly will be profitable given the positive reception of the show, and the overall quality of Korean (and Asian in general) convenience store products.
The nefarious genius comes from the manufacturer of the convenience challenge winner ingredients. The convenience store in the show is genericized, but the products used are not. Because the key ingredients used by the winner were in-house products manufactured from the a different conglomerate, the conglomerate made a collaboration with that chef specifically to sell that winning dish as a product in their own convenience stores.
Sales of the ingredients used for that dish alone spiked more than 30% in the week the chef made that dish, and preorders for his creation sold out in 20 minutes.
It is a fun enough show, but this is the one example of a media hype cycle translating into likely significant financial benefits to the contestants, and even Netflix itself. I strongly suspect other producers will eye this show and its subsequent impact closely.

How sincere was new age occultism in that era? Was it barnum style showmanship, or did people really believe and act their real life in accordance? The craziest cult practice I encountered personally was a thai woman who said she created real kumanthongs to sell to thai oligarchs. A kumanthong is a stillborn fetus removed from the womans uterus, then preserved by smoking and then wrapped in sanctified talismans. It had magic properties and was said to bring good luck. She was notorious for providing high end escorts in Southeast Asia who did not use condoms, and several guys I know who used her girls wondered if their kids were turned into good luck charms.

Exactly this. Yes, the Czechs probably have money traded under the table even now, and employees in the French DGA treats Thales as their eventual employer, but in the end what matters is the force getting something they need.
Some charity can be extended to procurement agencies who have to react when vendors shit the bed, but bad procurement practices treat a procurement exercise as a shitshow to begin with. German procurement leaves their ground and air capabilities a decade behind their intented readiness posture because of insane litigiousness, Italians keep using shitty refurbished Arietes or Mangustas, Spaniards have no money at all, and did well developing assets jointly but shit the bed entirely with their domestic submarine program.
In the end what matters for military procurement is whether the stuff they have is fit for purpose, and if not why is it so. Much of military procurement failures like the OP example of the Arrow are a combination of vendors bullshitting the client about the expected capabilities of their equipment, and parallel evolutions in technology leapfrogging an in-development project, rendering the initial project entirely useless. Some capabilities are due to client interference, like the issue with the M16 powder in Vietnam causing fouling after the initial vendor failed to deliver on the scaled up contracts.
And of course sometimes clients and vendors both grab the idiot ball together and decide to hail mary, usually to failure but sometimes to success. The US littoral combat ship is a case of that idiot ball exploding in their hands, while the F35 needed time to cook, and cook it did.
And of course you have simple insane corruption for contracts in governments with no real threat forcing a reckoning. Headline assets like submarines or jets or ships or tanks or even the guns make the news, but I've seen an invoice where a shipment of chicken was 5x the supermarket rate. Thats where the real money is for corruption, and given the quality of the meal I would argue it fits my definition of 'failure to deliver'. A military is ultimately a transportation service for bad things to go into someone else, but my transformation into a walking biohazard is definitely not part of their food procurement specifications.

Criteria for procurement success generally falls into the following categories:
- successful delivery (on time, on budget) of contractual requirements and subsequent phases including turnkey development
- suitability of requirements to mission objective
- compliance with governance restrictions, if any (re corruption)
- support local capability development, if any
When broken down in this manner, competing incentive mechanisms become immediately obvious, but also indirectly exploitable. Excepting definitional abuses of the above conditions, procurement failures for even basic systems are the statistical norm. Supporting indigenous capability development is the usual means governments and defense service sellers drain the public purse for no benefit, but ego stoking by censuring or advancing defense adjacent causes is also a common cause for mission failures.
It must be noted that a fundamental cause for procurement failures is economic incapability. Even if procurement practices are perfect, some states just have a shitty threat environment and cannot actually react to any practical threat which manifests. For the most part, the post Cold War peace dividend has resulted in objective 2 flailing about, letting defense budgets wither and focus shifting to counterterrorism and intelligence capabilities. In this anemic budget environment, inventories and capabilities have withered, with institutional knowledge rotting away and unable to redevelop even at a glacial pace.
The main defense many countries have is the incapability of their proximate threats. Nations are rolling the dice and hoping their neighbours are both too weak to actually do something and too smart to want to do something to begin with A military action is ruinous to both aggressor and defender regardless of kinetic success, and for many procurement agencies their mandates service internal political requirements when no external threat is manifest.

Broadly accurate, and the SA comparison is the most relevant one, as SA is looking to replicate Malaysias system of positive discrimination for the underperforming racial majority. Despite malay supremacist claims, Chinese Malaysians are not a transient expat population, but multigenerational residents with almost equal historical presence in Malaysia to the Malays. In any case, the who Malay political leaders (especially the Islamist supremacists) have found it expedient to use western theories of intersectionality to advance discrimination against Chinese via economic appropriation now find themselves bound by the public abuses committed by their islamist populations who are beneficiaries and proponents of Malay positive discrimination according to the same principle of intersectionality. It is the STOP NOTICING BIGOT aspect that caught my attention. It is unsurprising that malay supremacist politicians are saying that to notice the crimes of muslims committed to other muslims is an act of discrimination, and the criminals should be let off. Transport Minister in Singapore got sentenced 12 months for receiving gifts (about 300k of stupid shit like Taylor Swift tickets) without declaring. The corruption charge was dropped by the prosecution, so the peanut gallery anticipated a sentencing of about six weeks, given the reputation of the defense lawyer and the anticipation of an upcoming election making the prospect of having a minister prosecuted be embarrassing to the ruling party.
The long sentence, over what the prosecution asked for, therefore comes as a surprise. The Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau in Singapore does not fuck around, but the prosecution did ask for what was concluded to be a reasonable ask for an easy victory. In this boring country where things rarely happen, this public scalping is rather exciting, even if its more of a 1guard shave than last of the mohicans.

Islamic faith schools funded by successors of a banned islamic cult is found to have sexually abused hundreds of young boys under its care. My own experience with men and women who are in their 30s or 40s and single is remarkably consistent: men can talk about whatever mundane bullshit and usually hone in on one topic autistically for the night, but every single woman will at one point bring up their current dating situation even if we were not talking about it at all or were meant to be talking about something else.
I'm not the one who asks! I'm the unfuckable married friend, but that apparently makes me One Of The Girls and a sounding board for their current Life Situation. I wanted to hear about their fucking startup or their moms health or whatever, not their struggle with Hinge and their absolute failure to click with any girls on the apps.
Political lesbianism is advertised as an easy way for girls to avoid confronting the reality of their rapidly declining age-correlated attractiveness in the heterosexual dating market, but that doesn't change the fact that dating women is HARD for men or women. Liking tits isn't enough to be lesbian, you have to like spending time with a women with the background prospect of sex being present somewhere, and that just shorts their decision making heuristics.
It may be entirely possible for humans to exist without pair bonding or meaningful relationships. There may be men and women both decrying the necessity of relationship building to begin with, but the ratio of women versus men trying desperately to force themselves to be gay is noticably disproportionate. Specifics on work style and internal strategy are secondary to the issue at hand, which is women speaking out against harassment. However, I suspect that the HRfication of companies allows unworthy men to be deemed so by their failure to exercise the now-female hidden levers of power. In the older system, the unworthy men were exploiting a relationship arbitrage: their power distance to the overlord was shorter than the underlings, so suffer they must. In the HR world, the power distance is relative to the org tools each party can exploit. This levels/upends the playing field significantly, and lets juniors have a means of undermining superiors when it was impossible before.
Why would women complain about this? I will risk the ire of many here, but I am 100% sure it is a case of 'know your place, trash'. How dare this man, no matter his station, dare sully my environment with his unwanted affection. If the woman could, she would reserve her energy only for the most deserving of chads that are in her orbit, whether colleagues or clients.
Why do I posit this with such certainty? Because the greatest pushback against fraternization punishments in professional partnerships here is from women. Specifically, powerful senior women who boosted their early careers by dating and eventually marrying senior partners or clients. The entertainer gets to determine who is worthy to be entertained, and these women judge the game to be fair now as it was then.
No one wants to be sexually harassed. But once they have a taste of power, women have also found themselves indulging in its trappings and seeking means to perpetuate it for themselves.

2006 was one month, then the UN brokered a ceasefire to effect 1701. If both sides adhered to 1701 the war would not be seen as a unilateral victory. Hezbollah being duplicitous in its negotiations reflects poorly on the UN, not on Israeli military.
The previous major effort where Israel got its shit pushed in, it was Yom Kippur. For the first few days, Egypt orchestrated a masterful breach of the Israeli defenses along the Suez, then fought a competent (by their standards) ground campaign against the Israelis. That the Egyptians were losing this ground campaign even before their disaster is ignored, and the Israelis, like any competent entity, pivoted and responded in light of changing facts on the ground.
So too would 2006, had it gone on. Urban peer combat is horrendous, and the Israeli advantage in firepower is negated in such a war. Disciplined guerillas are notoriously difficult to react against following an ambush, so it is uncertain whether an Israeli pivot would have necessarily succeeded, but to claim 2006 is proof of Hezbollahs immunity is insane.
1701, if abided by, was a win condition for the Israelis. Hezb and Hamas all know they cannot actually stand up to even a modest IDF operation. Jihadi group terrorists waste immense amounts of money buying uniforms to cosplay as soldiers, making dramatic videos of themselves in balaclavas and camo ready to fight the dirty jew. In all the combat footage of Hezb or Hamas fighters, not a SINGLE uniform has been seen. Though if you unconsciously change your own subtle body language following the ocular patdown by, say, making a sweet kung fu pose and flexing your guns just that little bit, the other guy may do his own ocular patdown and change his body language as well and oh no its a schroedingers threat unboxing now we HAVE to fight see this is why men don't observe shit.
Korean shows arent optimized for fairness. Physical 100 is fucking insanely unfair, but its just really fun. Similarly I think the restaurant challenge was also poorly designed but showcased different thinkings among the chefs. I think there was an element of 'too many chefs will end up fighting' but cultural deference to leadership stopped egos getting in the way. I cannot help but contrast this with US reality TV where insane bickering is the norm.
I think the restaurant challenge ended up being much closer than it had any right to be, and the diners were more the star of that episode than the chefs. I loved the sight of a giant black man just steadily wolfing down plate after plate of food while the korean diners all gave their commentary and insight on the food. Man knew what he was here for, and he just gave it his all.
