One thing I love about the 1991 August Coup in the Soviet Union is that it’s about the only time and place in history where you could be a Conservative Communist.

Well, there’s definitely a strong belief that the elites are evil - ridiculously, cartoonishly evil, to the point that they poison the water and the skies, intentionally derail trains, and start wars just to make common people suffer.
That’s not just a modern American phenomenon. If you screw people over long enough they will eventually think you’re doing it on purpose. In the the few years before the French Revolution there was a persistent conspiracy theory among the poor residents of Paris that the food shortages were an intentional plot to starve the French people. In Russia in 1916 there were endemic rumors that the Tzarina was a German spy who was intentionally sabotaging the war effort.

In the last few hours there has been a massive drone attack on Russia’s strategic bomber fleet. Apparently drone swarms were smuggled into Russia in cargo trucks and released a short distance from the airfields. Some of the bases attacks are more than 4,500 kilometers away from the Ukrainian border. The Ukrainian MOD claims that 34 percent of Russias’s strategic air force has been destroyed. This is an unconfirmed number, but there are multiple videos of groups of 4-7 TU-95 bombers burning on their airfields.

I think there’s a lot of pretty catastrophic scenarios even with modest AI advancement. They don’t tend to get a lot of examination because most people tend to be focused on the really extreme best and worst case scenarios.

Banning entry to people with connections to hostile foreign political organizations is pretty standard practice in Burgerland, and has been forever. If you ever immigrated to the United States, you would have to sign a bunch of forms swearing up and down that you are not an SS officer (they haven’t updated them in a while). It looks like it only bans students have actual CPC membership or connections to the party, not just anyone from China. Now, you could argue that’s just a cover story, and you might be right, but the legality would depend on how the order is written and enforced.
Hunger strikes are a stupid strategy outside of prison. When the hunger striker is in prison, the authorities have to pick one of the two terrible optics choices of either force feeding them or letting them starve to death. Margaret Thatcher had to make that choice once regarding an imprisoned Member of Parliament, chose wrong, and the ensuing hullabaloo singlehandedly reignited the Troubles for another next fifteen years. If some rando civilian who’s loose and free and on the street decides to give themselves an eating disorder, and no one really has a responsibility to do anything about it, that doesn’t really reflect badly on anyone but the person themselves.

Mr. Chesterton is a man without guile so he doesn’t realize the form is actually a trap. Lying on the form is a crime and can get your visa or citizenship revoked. So when the anarchist gets busted by the cops at an anarchist demonstration in New York six months later with his anarchist party card in his pocket, it proves he was lying on the form and out he goes. Even if just “being an anarchist” is not a crime and protected by the first amendment.

I’ve seen similarly grandiose lies come out of the Western military establishment (like the claim that four 20 year old MRLS systems being donated to Ukraine would allow them to singlehandedly win the war.) The difference here is that there’s no apparatus to gaslight you when you you point out the obvious fact that it’s ridiculous.
I’m pretty sure beating your own pregnant wife to death, then castrating a slave and making him larp as your late wife for the next three years would have been a little bit weird even to the Roman audience. Also the mere fact that the historian is bringing it up suggests that it’s supposed to be noteworthy.

The rumors about Julius Caesar were definitely a smear (given that the rumor was that he was a bottom, and a bottom for a foreign king no less). Also notice that the really degenerate ones like Nero and Caligula happen to be controversial figures who were overthrown and assassinated. The degeneracy bolsters their depiction as generally crazy and unfit to rule.

Rome was a pretty libertine society at the upper rungs, but you need to take dirty rumors about Roman emperors with a grain of salt. Politicized smear campaigns were just as much of a thing back then as they are now, and often that stuff later ended up being written down as fact. In 2000 years it will be “well established historical fact” that Emperor Trump was once micturated upon by princesses from the Kievan Rus and that Proconsul Hillary was a witch who drank blood to extend her lifespan.
This seeeeeeems like a tongue in cheek pantomime of anti woke media preferences, but ahem.
It won’t seem so “tongue in cheek” when the Martian Tripods are marching on Whitehall, treading down all of Western Civilization under the pitiless gaze their vile heat rays.
That actresses eyes arent quite far apart enough to make her diverse.

I did just watch a movie called The Northman
The Northman was ahistorical subversive GARBAGE. I got 15 minutes into that film and it was looking pretty based and redpilled and then ^^^Anya Taylor-Joy^^^ showed up. So now we have to take a historically accurate film set in Scandinavia in the Eighth Century AD on Earth and cram an ayylmao actress into it in the name of “diversity”

My point is, the Republican Party as of 2015 was dead in the water. If you look at the 2012 election internal postmortem assessment, the Republican strategy was basically “give up, concede all cultural and immigration positions, become slightly more corporatist Democrats”. The landslide defeat of ¡Jeb! to Hillary Clinton in 2016 would have been the final loogie on the grave of American conservatism. People like @aqouta bemoan Donald Trump’s hijacking of the Republican Party and the demise of REAL TRVE CONSERVATISM, when Trump is only reason any kind of conservatism, or the Republican Party itself, still exists at all.

@2rafa @Tree You think that way because you’re both boomers. The reason people used to like the town bicycle is because they would occasionally get a turn to ride the town bicycle. That’s where the term comes from! When the town bicycle gets seized from the public commons and only the mayor and the five richest businessman in town get to ride it anymore, it just becomes yet another symbolic way you’re getting ground into the dirt. You have to open Instagram and see the mayor in his stupid little top-hat doing donuts in the town square on the bicycle that you never get ride going ding-ding-ding on the bell and you grit your teeth in hatred and tab over to BicycleHub dot com to look at even more bicycles that you’ll never, ever get to ride. Forget actually owning a bicycle, they’re much too expensive. You’ll just have to walk.
