Amazon does sell used books, but in my experience eBay is always the cheapest. I used Thriftbooks for a while because they used to have $1 shipping and if you combine orders over $10, shipping is free. But recently I’ve found them to always be more expensive than eBay.

Is it a trilogy? Or is it a series? After the Name of the Wind fiasco, I swore I'd never start an unfinished series again...

I’d play a helluva lot more golf.

I'd like to see your CCR album rankings. Can you share?

It’s become pretty common practice but it requires a smart head coach and a disciplined player. There are many examples where the player was told to go down before the end zone but instinct took him in.

Why do you call him Jacob Leon Rubenstein instead of Jack Ruby as he’s universally known?

Drinking would certainly occur at the campfire.

I like it. I’m judging my guests mostly on their ability to make me laugh and tell wild stories.

I agree with the answer below. I had a persistent case of jock rash, used anti-fungal meds for years before seeing a colorectal specialist. Turned out I had an anal fistula and needed surgery. Been good ever since.

I agree. I kept waiting and waiting for Claudius to finally become emperor and realized about 50 pages from the end that the book would likely end right at the point where he did become emperor.

I think my issue with the book is that once Livia died, the intrigue and backstabbing and villainy became far less subtle and interesting. Caligula was indeed a villain, but a far less interesting one than Livia. His villainy was right up in your face while Livia’s villainy was in the shadows.

Thanks for the rec, I've got it saved in my cart.

My after-work routine depends on the day. I'll usually do one of the following:

-Hit the gym

-Go to the driving range

-Go to the movie theater (solo)

-Meal prep (almost always a home-made caesar salad with chicken)

-Group therapy (every thursday)

-Softball team (spring and summer only)

-Hang out with my girlfriend

I'm lucky that I only need to be in the office two days a week, so I have a lot of flexibility in my after-work regiment. I spend a lot of time (too much, tbh) by myself during the week, so I really try to stay active instead of sitting alone in my apartment.

This sounds like a good, social life.

Does anyone have a book recommendation about the history of policing in the United States? Looking for something that covers post American Revolution to modern day.

No harm no foul

I finished Dreamland, I found it quite good though I wish it would have gone into more detail on the pharmaceutical companies and their internal machinations. I suppose a lot of that didn’t come out until a few years after the book was published.

Started Beloved. It’s not as slow as I originally thought and the writing is quite beautiful. Morrison crafts similes and analogies that are so striking and descriptive, it creates wonderful imagery in the minds eye. Looking forward to finishing it.

I enjoyed Rise and Fall, but also found it a bit…un-journalistic. If you have the chance, I really recommend Ian Kershaws one-volume Hitler Biography. I still maintain that is the best biography I’ve ever read. It focuses not just on Hitlers life, but the world context that allowed him to gain power. The parts on 1920s Germany and the power, influence, and independence of the German generals is particularly interesting.

The fact that Dumas was able to make 500 pages of conversation semi-interesting is indeed a feat. I just found myself unable to read long chunks at a time. I would fall asleep.

Basil is indeed a sweeter bourbon, but that is my preferred taste. I don’t dislike bulleit, but if I’m going for something without the sweetness, I would tend toward whiskey.

Cheers

Were you guys able to get there for the sunrise though? That's a pretty spectacular way to experience Machu Picchu.

This is a solid book. I also recommend Peter Lynch’s One Up on Wall Street if you’re interested in more investment books.

I'd probably go hang out with my male friends and commiserate about how it's both a blessing and a curse to be in such a situation. I also don't think there's anything wrong/socially inappropriate with remarking upon a woman's body if she's decided to wear minimal clothing. As long as it's done in a joking/non-creepy way. Something like, "GodDAMN Jill, have you been working out?!" This allows you to address the obvious: that there is a woman who your brainstem wants to have sex with, but your frontal cortex knows you cannot.

I'm going to find myself in this situation this weekend, so maybe I can report back my findings.

You do you, everyone has a different risk tolerance.

You have your work cut out for you. I saw you mentioned he is a plot hound mix, hounds are notoriously stubborn and can be difficult to train. And if he’s already one year old, some of that behavior will be more difficult to get rid of than if he were, say, 4 months old.

I’d recommend getting a crate and practicing crate games with him. I know a lot of people are anti-crate, but I’ve had a lot of success using a crate with multiple dogs. It allows you to lock them up when you leave the house giving you peace of mind that they won’t destroy anything. And it doesn’t have to be permanent, just something you keep until you can trust leaving them home alone.

I also second the other commenters suggestion to revisit the dogs exercise regiment. Running around the backyard is great, but your dog wants explore. Hikes are best, but walks are good too. I’d recommend at least an hour a day walking, hiking, or running with your dog. Dog parks can also be your friend, but can be dicey. People have strong opinions on dog parks. Personally, I think they can be great if you can find a dog park with responsible owners and if you have a dog who is well socialized.

I’m also not a big fan of shock collars, particularly for non-aggressive behavior. They can turn a dog more aggressive without a lot of benefit. Positive reinforcement is best, but there’s also nothing wrong with smacking a dog (lightly) if he’s deliberately acting up.

There’s a lot you can do to train a dog, but they are stubborn and challenging. Doing the same thing every day is key to a well trained dog. This is much easier said than done.
