I'm not a (immigration) lawyer.
I'm skipping a few important details but.... here's what I know.
The standard pathway is: (I used this)
- Get into a STEM masters program (Healthcare ML might be a good for you)
- Get approved for a 3 year work visa by landing a job (STEM OPT)
- Pray to the god of luck, that your H1b application gets picked up over 3 tries
- Continue working on the H1B
- get into a for-ever waitlist for EB2 your green card
- Live on the H1b for life-ish
In you case some differences are:
- Not sure if doctors are eligible for EB1 (you can get that in 3 years from application date)
- If you apply for a Green Card through your partner, then you don't have the usual waitlist (assuming she already has hers)
- If you apply to do research or work at an NGO, you can get easier visas. (J1, F1, O1, noprofit-h1b)
Honestly, I would look at Canada. Climate change is going to make it very livable, and the immigration process is generous towards high achieving people. You get your PR in 1 year, and citizenship in 5 years. Then you're free to move to the US on a special visa and stay as long as you'd like. Canada will be solving its social-security pyramid issue through brute force immigration. They get to ride the American economic wave for free, while having a ton of under-utilized natural resource in store.
I dont fit into any Eb1 category, so dunno much about it. I have a few tier1 papers and US patents to my name, but none sufficiently cited to get me that Eb1. PhDs are practically required.... and I dont have 5 years to kill.
Isnt your long term partner a US citizen ? I have pretty much resigned to that being the pathway that will come up earliest. I have a pending eb2 submission, but thats a few decades in thw queue.
Tangential rant.
My roommate who is a 2nd gen american-indian dated a bunch of indian dudes who went to AIIMS Delhi or IIT Bombay and now live in our high COL US city. She obviously has zero context for Indian institutes.
Then i hear her complain one day about how these men she dates only talk about work, never have time, cant make time for hobbies or jusst generally sound self important.....all while showering praises on any ivy league dude she ran into.
The ignorance is mindblowing. This is literally the 0.01 percentile of the country. They were the top 200 smartest Indians among 1 million annual applicants. MIT CS basically hands out free-admits eyes-closed to any IIT top 100 ranker. Some of my closest friends are MIT CS kids, and it is an open secret that the international chinese and Indian kids are straight up smarter. (Might not be as wellrounded tho) The funniest part is that all of these men are insanely humble, becuase thwy know their brand does all the talking for them. But in this case, they just come off as under-signalling.
Then when her dates dont work out, she'll say something like : "my expectations arent too high. I just want date someone like the guys i go on dates with, but that'll have time for me."
Lady, I dont think you even understand that youre dating the 10% of the 0.001 percentile of India who are both mindbogglingly smart and somehow hot enough for you to swipe on them. Her ex worked at google and paid for a whole Euro-trip and she says she doesnt care about how much money her partner has....... girl.......
Its a little sad to know just how monumentally delusional the expectations on these dating apps are. Also a little sad to hear people say things like : "Green cards to the US are not that hard. My friend did his medicine from Aiims / is a professor after studying at IIT bombay" and he got in. You should try something like that."
Bruh, I'd have better odds if I tried winning the lottery.
Gpt4 >>>> everything else
Its 20 dollars a month. I'd suggest cheaper alternatives, but 20 dollars a month for game changing tech is cheap enough already.
If youre in 2 minds.....The gpt4 api is around 1$ per 50 interactions. (Im making some hand wavy assumptions aboht your usecase). Put 20$ on it and see how quickly you run out. If it runs out in less than a month, go get the subscription.
Fuck you themotte. Cant you add a "are you sure want to leave" pop up when I'm halfway through my draft ???? I have lost too many comments through an accidental click.
Knives out 2 - Glass Onion also plays into that same 'diversity-person good, white man unfathomably evil' trope. So I am more inclined to trust that accusation.
The racial angle has only started getting weaponized over the last decade or so. IMO, your observations are more so a coincidence than malice.
In old Hollywood, the MC HAD to be white. This meant that any alternate race had to be cast in a supporting role. Now, every artist loves contrast and race is the laziest way to add contrast. So the white man was the hero, and the "sidekick who inherited it all" ended up being of some other race.
If you try to make every important character white, then you get the Hangover or 21 Jumpstreet. Movies where each white person can only be differentiated by making them lean very heavily into a stereotype, to the point of caricature. 21 jumpstreet - The fat ugly guy and the stupid jock. Hangover - The wierdo nerd, the chad and the vanilla. Seems tired in comedy, but practically impossible to pull off in a serious genre.
It certainly became more malicious as time went on. The hero was an LA liberal. So what other types of "white" are there. LA hates republicans, so you couldn't have someone who signaled republican. As republican started meaning rural-blue-collar-christian, there weren't a lot of white stereotypes to play into. So you start getting situations where the other race is the inheritor. Now ofc, the racial dynamics are explicit policy in the woke era. But, that's a more recent phenomenon.
You've put my feelings into words better than I ever could.
We're not too different. I too am Indian, ADHD riddled, and confused at how un-appreciative my fellow coastal-Americans are of this great nation. My American girlfriend lives out in Europe and refuses to appreciate the great nation for what it is. I quote her from last week : "Screye, we need to talk about settling down in the US and how it is going to shit. Abortion is illegal and everyone is becoming conversative." God bless her.
I was lucky enough to choose the 'right' science, the one with an easier pathway to the US, but that's about it.
All global super powers are ruthless. America too is a ruthless global superpower, one that tries to be benevolent, more so than any that came before. There is no ruthless superpower I'd rather be oppressed by. The US is so wildly productive, that no amount of crumbling infrastructure or urban zombie hordes can so much as dent its economic productivity. It's a fucking cheat code in nation form. Competing is futile.
If that wasn't enough, its secular founding document has an appeal so universal through time and space, that even the best efforts of enemy nations can't stop their best from dreaming of America. The people here are fair and uncorrupt. They try to be race blind, as much as their caveman genes would allow. They don't treat me as an outsider, and all they ask is I try.
The country has issues, but the US is a nation in decline in the same way that Michael Jordan was 'over' after his 1st retirement.
Don't think I don't see the cracks in the pristine facade, the erosion of the meritocracy that made your country glorious. I simply think that if America wakes up and patches a few holes, it can earn the right to slumber again in peace for centuries hence.
All that being said, this is exactly what I thought about Intel, and they some how managed to stay in their slumber until everyone had leap frogged them and it was too late.
I am bullish on Threads.
Some platform transfers are like a Siphon. The hard part is getting the first leak to start. After that, it sustains itself. A good siphon needs 2 things : the destination should be at a low-enough potential and the fence should be short enough. Twitter made the fence shorter by causing all their problems and creating a will for users to leave. Every other destination platform so far has itself being high friction : Mastadon, Blue sky, etc. Threads is so low effort to start it is not even funny.
Digg to Reddit was like this. Twitter will keep bleeding users now that the Siphon has begun. Twitter might still hold onto some communities, but it will be a shell of itself without the core 'normie audience', and as threads becomes feature complete. the quirky people will transition as well. Adding new features to threads is going to be a breeze for Facebook. A new platform is infinitely easier to build on without tech debt.
Threads is trying to be the TikTok of text
emphasis on trying. Facebook has shown itself to be sufficiently mobile given enough user demand. As of now, it appears as if it is a twitter-peer, not competitor. But, if more ex-twitter users start demanding twitter like features, I can see Threads morphing into a non-anonymous-twitter because that's what users want. The product follows the money.
My predictions:
-
95% - Threads will never be bigger than Twitter at its peak
-
90% - Threads will have a positive stock impact on Meta's future
-
80% - Threads is permanent and here to stay. A ~20% of twitter's US base will have moved permanently in before Oct 2023
-
70% - Threads will increasingly look more and more like twitter. It will not differentiate itself. It will compete on a 1:1 feature basis.
-
60% - Threads will have full feature parity with twitter in 1 year
-
50% - Snapchat has 30% of instagram's users. Threads will have more than 30% of Twitter's active users in 2 years.
-
20% - Threads will have more active users than twitter in 2 years
Fair. Urban snobbishness is a problem across societies around the world, and it gets on people's nerves real fast.
I feel you brother. Best of luck.

Learn the basics of python - 6.0.01x MIT Edx is a good fast starter
-
Ask Chat GPT plus for everything else
The Chat GPT iteration process is:
-
Set up a vscode / python code interpreter
-
preferably setup jupyter notebooks in it
-
ask chat gpt something that has existed before its cut off date (which will be written at the bottom on the chatgpt website)
-
google the exact same thing to see if people are giving similar answers
-
either ways, copy paste the code chatgt gave you into the jupyter notebook
-
string it together with your python 101 knowledge with the other bits
-
run
-
Once it fails, tell chat gpt what you were trying to to and copy the entire ugly user message there
-
It will tell you how to fix it
-
If that fails, then ask google
-
Rinse and repeat until success

To be fair, I have been at dinner tables full of transplants in SF & Seattle, where we were all lamenting the how dysfunctional the city government is, the crime, etc. And the racism.
I suggest an amendment to a popular adage :
Malice is often mistaken for sufficiently advanced incompetence.
It is not incompetent of Disney middle-managers to care about DEI and ESG. It is intentional. It is as malicious as any well-intentioned actions that constitute the road to hell. "It's not malice when the good guys do it", sounds fairly close to what a Tankie might say. And you never want to start sounding like a Tankie.
Don't think this is culture war as much as "it was inevitable".
company moved fast and broke things
I am glad to see SV get torn a new one. As a MechE turned CompSci person, the difference in ethos between both fields is shocking. It is one thing to have a careless approach when human lives aren't at stake. But to then throw shade towards fields where safety is paramount is classic SV hubris.
their physical products kinda suck
Thanks for saying this out loud. Credit where it is due to Apple. It is the only tech company that knows how to make robust physical products.
Have you walked from Chelsea to Soho?
Yeah, it's 30 minutes. In those 30 minutes you see more inspired architecture and more Michelin starred restaurants than entire regions of the US. A good few grocery stores, a target, every fashion store that exists and some of the world's premier underground performance locations (Smalls Jazz, Comedy central). You'll cross effectively 100k people worth of housing, and all in a 30 minute walk, 10 minute bike share, or a 10 minute subway ride.
30 minutes in the traffic in LA, and you're still in traffic while having burned 200 fewer calories.
Have you seen the sorts of "communities" that get social service? You want to get the birth rate down to 0, this is a great way to do it.
I meant it as an umbrella term. I am guessing that this presently utopian nondescript nation does not have Tenderloin/Seattle/Skidrow level of social deterioration.
As E.O. Wilson said, great idea, wrong species.
Could you elaborate on why you think that ? Separated Single Family Housing only exists for North America, villages & millionaires. Everyone else in most of the world lives in apartments, and quite happily too.
LOL. Have you ever been to New York City?
I live in NYC.
NYC has managed to slow cars enough
What could NYC do to speed up cars more ? What has it done to slow cars down ?
NYC manages to excel by American standards, but that's a passing grade for global cities in the rest of the world. As compared to other cities of the world, NYC actually allows cars to take a highway straight into the downtown core of the city. Other cities cut off the highway at the edge of the ring road that surrounds the city core. Both Manhattan highways occupy the most expensive waterfront space in the world. If the 2 highways were fully moved underground, you'd be looking at one of the most expensive sale of airspace in the entire history of humanity.
Parking is free or dirt cheap in most of the city, while occupying area that generates far more revenue if given as restaurant seating space. Note there are 3 types of people who take cars into NYC. The first are people who are so rich, that they could have simply taken a daily cab instead. The second are slightly-rich people who commute into the city with a car, who should have to pay actual market rate for parking or have their employer pay it. The final are disabled people who ofc deserve to be accommodated, and should have separate reserved parking on each block.
loan to buy the apartment
Generally speaking, pouring all your hard earned money into a deteriorating asset is a terrible idea. So the local populace responds by limiting supply and making their terrible investment look amazing through hoarding and supply crunch. Afterall, their entire life savings are invested in this 1 asset who material value is a lot lower than what you pay for it. Allow building of more housing, and housing prices themselves will stay low enough such that loan amounts are proportionally lower. Just providing loans is insufficient and sometimes quite harmful.
pop culture producers to promote pro-family memes
This will fall so flat on its face, that it will be laughed at for decades to come.
fifth child these loans are forgiven
In the short term, It's effectively a wealth transfer from those in their 20s to those in their 30s & 40s. How do you avoid losing a massive part of your young workforce to out-migration ? anything more than 2 children means guaranteed stay-at-home mom. Why will women want to live in this society that penalizes them for working ?
5% raise
Assuming most men end up becoming fathers, will it mean a corresponding ~3%-point increase in tax rates ?
Some ideas:
-
Mandatory conscription for all for 2 years. Involves anything for social service, working in schools, being a nanny, etc.
-
exposure therapy is the best way to get people to want kids & community. Show, don't tell.
-
mandatory conscription is soft way to control in and out migration
-
It also makes men grow into men. Never met a completely socially inept Singaporean or Israeli. Plenty of those among Chinese and American Jews.
-
allows both sexes to fuck around, and enter university with a degree of seriousness
-
-
Generous paternity and maternity leaves for sure. But even more generous 'return to work' programs. Have grad school be seen as a 'return to work' program for all genders.
-
Make housing dirt cheap by scaling up middle rise dense housing.
-
Mother-in-law home subsidy
- If grand-parents move to couples town by selling a house to buy another, then don't have to pay capital gains on old house that was sold
-
Propaganda around
-
Climate change optimism / Tech optimism
-
IVF (higher twin rates)
-
Kids achievements over adult achievements. Youth teams, Teen competitions glamorized more.
-
-
short-distance policies
-
policies to allow couples to go to same universities & common conscription programs (exploitable, but this isn't a scarcity society, so maybe not?)
-
generous WFH policies across the board for all
-
A Russia--Iran--China axis means that all of Central & Northern Asia is outside US influence as an unbroken landmass. The stan countries are irrelevant and Pakistan is a Chinese vassal state.
It's fortunate that China is so dependent on sea based trade, because it is thoroughly flanked by US allies in the sea. Effective land based trade needs to be established between Iran, Russia & China. If that's achieved, then between those 3 and indebted B&R nations, China should be able to get dedollarification started quite soon.
Can you expand this? I've never heard somebody blame the drug/homelessness/theft/inner city problems on cars before. Is the idea that you should force people to live among the filth, because then they would be more motivated to fix it?
That's my bad. I conflated multiple things together and wrote a confusing mess.
All 3 of these cities are designed with meeting the needs of car based visitors more than the needs of the residents. And it shows.
I meant that serving the interests of commuters rather than tax-payers of the city has led to cities being carved up in ways that is hostile to the city's residents. This is a pure urban planning complaint, and not an inner city related problem.
drug/homelessness/theft/inner city problems on cars
Agreed. I am blaming it squarely on incompetent city govts. SF, Seattle and Portland's local govts have done everything in their power to make public spaces feel unsafe and public transit feel unusable. To be fair, if you've ever parked in the downtowns of any of these cities, cars don't feel much safer either.
you should force people to live among the filth, because then they would be more motivated to fix it?
It is a good question. Because dumping an interstate through the city must've cost around $25B in adjusted costs (using BigDig as reference). Surely that is enough money to solve a homelessness issue for any competently run city govt. Sadly, SF is the diametric opposite of competent. So we have a human constructed hellscape that progressives are convinced is what heaven looks like. I like that about New England liberals. Lot less incompetent.
Public transportation is so slow and a hassle.
Public transit is only slow if it is has to sit in traffic. In NYC, Boston & Western Europe, it is a lot faster to get around in public transit than in cars. The problem with cars, is that you have to build larger roads and parking spaces everywhere. That makes transit impossible. That leads to everyone using cars, which in turn requires larger roads and parking spaces. So now everyone wants to go somewhere by far fast, but that that has made traffic worse and the place you want to go to farther off. When you build for transit, everything is so close by that even walking is faster than a car.
far away
Yes ofc. Agreed. For anything out of town, trains can serve a similar purpose. But I am not opposed to cars as an essential means of transport outside the city core.
All of this is especially perplexing giving the rampant drinking culture in the US. If the only fun event in most towns is drinking, then how can I drive to the spot ? I guess the obesity epidemic keeps the BAC levels low /s .
I would love to see a new category called "unrestrained". An anything goes category that allows anything from cybernetics, PEDs, external instructions and bodily modifications. Similar to the Paralympics, it won't be so much about winning gold, as it would be about celebrating the diverse ways in which humans can manifest. Allow alternate rules. People can shout anything they want, women can go tits out to distract players, you can oil yourself up to be slippery.
Sell its rights to the most brutally viewership focused channel. Teams are chosen in a manner that encourages viewership rather than any objective sense of metric. Win of lose, everyone gets celebrated. Allow a lot more substitutions, so you can swap in people of the oddest profiles for the most advanced form of rock-paper-scissors.
WWE is more popular than MMA. Lets go balls out. The Lance Armstrong phase of cycling was the most fun anway. #BringBackSteroids.
