If you care about sound policy you need to use the same definitions on both sides of the equation to determine ratios.

If anyone in the not convicted of a crime side is allowed self-ID and only accused (or convicted?) can have that status revoked externally your numbers won’t work.

In the situation where trans women convicted of crimes can have that status revoked, you are automatically biasing your numbers away from criminality in that population.

If your true ratio is A:B and you change that to A-0:B-X the ratio automatically gets larger. Assuming of course X>0, but if it isn’t, it’s kind of a silly argument anyways.

That’s the math part. The politics part is there has been an argument from the beginning that if self-ID is the only requirement then there will be bad actors. We should not use it for this very reason.

Originally the the response was that no one would lie about this so we shouldn’t be concerned.

Now it feels like the response is of course those bad actors couldn’t really mean it, so we shouldn’t count bad people on our side, they’re on yours.

Diversity within the different groups really screws with the story. It seems especially silly since there are so many different groups which were already represented in the source material.

An actual faithful telling of the story would be very diverse and show a substantial amount of gender equality without undermining the story.

In the source material there are several intercultural and interracial relationships that just vanish if there aren’t any different cultures or races to begin with.

In this particular case it really feels like they used dei as a weapon to rub it into the fans’ noses instead of either telling the story or making any valuable points about gender/race/culture.

I think they largely changed things that make sense in The Expanse.

In the TV version there’s a belter creole language. In the books, it seems less fleshed out and more like English with occasional other languages mixed in. Sort of like how in Firefly people would occasionally speak in Mandarin (I think). Since in the books, people are physically different from growing up in low g and it’s visually obvious, the creole provides a cultural separation in place of the physical.

The Ashford character is completely rewritten in the TV show, and his second Carlos “Bull” Baca becomes a female character, Camina Drummer. Both seem largely to be more interesting characters so it wasn’t a huge loss.

Both Amos and Alex are older, fatter and balder then their TV counterparts.

If you liked the books, it’s worth a watch.

There was an order kiosk at one of the McDonald’s in Flint in the mid/late 90s. It was pretty clunky by modern standards, but it worked just fine.

A heat pump is basically an air conditioner unit that you can switch from circulating cold air and discharging hot air to circulating hot air and discharging cold air.

Heat pumps can have in theory +200% efficiency. This means for every unit of energy it moves two. So for heating, it takes one unit of energy to move two units of energy from your cold end to your hot end.

This number is only really impressive when you’re comparing to electric heat. Where 1 unit of energy going into your baseboard heater provides something like 1 unit of heat in your house.

If your burning #2 fuel oil (or any other fossil fuel really), it may not be cheaper without pairing it with a geothermal cell. There’s a few kinds of geothermal cells, but they’re basically wells or loops of pipe buried in the ground. Since the ground temperature is something like 55 degrees and water has a very high specific heat, it is easier for the heat pump (air conditioner) to pull heat from that water then from the probably much colder air (while heating). It’s also easier to discharge that heat when you’re cooling so it’s a savings on air conditioning too. Even at the same temperature, the water can transfer much more heat.

TLDR

Heat pumps are better than baseboard heat, but may not be more cost effective than fossil fuels unless paired with geothermal.

I’m not an HVAC guy, so anyone that is please correct any misunderstandings I have.

I would be very surprised if they do not in heavily Mormon areas.

I think one difference between immigrant minorities and non-immigrant minorities is the direct connection to an outside culture.

One small part is I’ve heard from vegetarians for years that it takes x pounds of grain to make y pounds of meat, so we should just eat the food for our food and we’d have so much more.

This argument is only really true when you’re feeding livestock with human food. A substantial amount of livestock are grazed in areas unsuitable for farming and can’t be replaced with corn or wheat. You’d just end up reducing the overall amount of food available to humans.

One of the important points about the self-driving aspect is that we already have the capability to self drive cars in a tunnel.

The software and hardware are very much simplified. There are no deer/soccer balls/children to avoid and the turns are very simple.

Comparing people movement on a highway with self-driven cars in a tunnel might be a useful approximation, but there’s no reason that the tunnels can’t have 100mph cars two feet apart. If you can solve the inefficiencies at on/off ramps and keep people from braking unnecessarily, throughput should go way up.
