I definitely think at the very least in 2 years when half of all new rifles are SBR, and gun stores are handing out $50 suppressors like candy, it may be hard to go back.

I certainly hope so. The horse seems out of the barn on many NFA restrictions between forced-reset triggers and every gangbanger having a switch on his Glock, so continuing to punish law abiding citizens for wanting a silencer or AR pistol with a stock (instead of arm brace) is absurd. Not that absurdity ever stops the government, of course.

Justice Department won’t enforce registration rules on silencers and certain guns after court ruling

The Trump administration announced the enforcement policy changes after a Texas judge in August ruled the permitting process was unconstitutional. The judge’s ruling was limited to the parties involved in that case, but the Justice Department said Friday it would no longer enforce the registration requirements more broadly.

Under the new guidance, ATF will no longer require registration unless the buyer lives in one of about 15 states that have state laws requiring that people go through the federal permitting process. The registration process will still apply for machine guns and what are considered “destructive devices” under federal law, the Justice Department said.

This is not a legislative change or even a change after a Supreme Court ruling, so the next administration could reverse it. With that said, the amount of erosion of the National Firearms Act in the last decade is beyond the wildest dreams of the most fervent pro-2nd amendment crowd from 20 years ago. There are states now banning AR15s or trying to ban handguns, but if a person doesn't live in one of those, they can buy a short-barreled rifle and suppressor with no background check or tax stamp.

It's a reference to Life of Brian.

If you steal the identity of a dead baby, and successfully maintain the identity theft for thirty years, then do you gain legal ownership of the stolen identity through adverse possession?

I saw this opinion when it was published and wondered what led to the prosecution. It seems the feds initially suspected an espionage angle but couldn't make those charges stick, so they pursued the false statements and ID theft instead. The couple sounds like a pair of weirdos who read too many 1970s spy thrillers (which often use the "dead infant" identity idea).

Notices Bulge, the judicial version: United States v. Bontemps, 977 F.3d 909 (2020) (google scholar link, not pdf)

From 2020, so not recent, but a fun read if you haven't seen it. Between the opinion and the dissent, they use the world "bulge" 113 times. And this is no ordinary bulge. This one is:

  • very large and obvious bulge
  • a very obvious bulge
  • a suggestive bulge
  • a distinctive bulge

I'm sure the law clerks who helped draft this one had a great time seeing how many times they could use the word. Unfortunately for Mr. Bontemps, the court holds that his bulge was suggestive of a firearm and was sufficient to create reasonable suspicion for police officers to stop him.

The solution here is that Cornell should've expelled her after she reported this incident. Per her own statement and the various text messages, she voluntarily went unchaperoned to a party with the intent to engage in fornication with two men, and she consumed illegal drugs while there. I'm sure this was after curfew and she was probably out of uniform when she arrived, too.

Much of the same analysis applies to the men. They consumed alcohol and illegal drugs and engaged in fornication. Easy grounds for expulsion. The fraternity org itself should be fined for allowing an unchaperoned woman to enter the house.

Of course none of that would ever happen after the civil rights era eliminated universities acting in loco parentis because that was impeding student freedoms to consume drugs, engage in fornication, attend leftist protests, etc. The activists succeeded wildly and students now have those freedoms (apart from maybe at a few private religious universities). In fact, it's a big selling point of university that it's 4 years to drink, party, have sex, and generally make questionable choices. It's a shocked pikachu face moment that the freedom to make questionable or poor choices occasionally leads to questionable or poor outcomes.

Cornell recently released survey results claiming that 35% of female undergraduates reported non-consensual sexual contact in the last year (it will not take long for anyone here reviewing this survey to spot many issues). Given the apparent epidemic of such behavior, it would seem time to return to universities having far more control over student behavior to keep those students safe.

There is no small amount of irony in modern college students calling for the return of universities acting in loco parentis.

Was that tweet in response to something specific?

Why the hell are they sitting at a desk all day, isolated from their friends and children, reading and typing emails, looking at spreadsheets?

No kidding. Why am I such a retard that I have to spend my days dealing with criminals, prosecutors, and judges (but I repeat myself, har har) instead of making money on the interwebs?

I fully believe the universe created this news story just so you could finally post this.

The first MMA gym leader who realizes that yoga/pilates/barre studios are full of eligible single women and can rally his men behind him could be the next Genghis Khan.

Textiles/sewing/clothing, yes.

Now you're sounding like some kind of reactionary who wishes to oppress women and minorities with traditional sexual morality. See for example this paper arguing laws like the Mann Act are racist because they "police Black male sexuality."

All gainers have some kind of carb (or else they'd just be protein powders), so I think some kind of brushing at a minimum would be necessary to avoid forming tooth-damaging acids against my teeth underneath the trays.

And I'm six foot two.

Man, how many 6'2" lawyers are around here? The 6'2" law firm could be unstoppable.

My bulking plan just hit a snag: back to 22-hour wear with my invisalign setup for another 3 months. Brushing and flossing at work in a public bathroom is... gross. Having to do that every day after eating lunch was such a pain when I had to do it originally that I gave up on eating lunch.

After the 3 months, though, I'm finally done with this nonsense (aside from nightly wear forever).

Are those the overall sex ratio numbers, not age specific ones? The ones for NYC get skewed heavily by the older cohort of women if you use overall numbers, and it doesn't do the average 25yo male much good that there are loads of single 50+ women in NYC (jokes about cougars aside). You said 25-39, but those sound more like the overall ones I remember.

edit: this one I was thinking of is old data. I wish I could see an update with moveable sliders like this one has. Set to 20-39 and the oversupply of women seems to vanish.

Do they just not know?

At least among my cohort (elder millennial PMCs), they have no clue what ladylike behavior is or how they would teach a daughter that behavior. Many of them have daughters who are barely housebroken because the parents seem to view any restriction on the daughter's behavior as oppressive or crushing her delicate spirit or whatever (they do not appear to apply that same rule to their sons, curious).

I know one woman who is very ladylike (and as you say, it's a ridiculous advantage to getting the world to bend to her will), but she's a solid Xer who is 10 years older than me and was raised in the South. Other than her, the women I know range in how traditionally feminine they are, but none would count as a lady.

It’s just pretty well obvious that going to a fraternity house, getting high and blackout drunk, etc. are things that will end very badly for you.

A coworker of mine, a conservative church-going married woman, said in response to some of the original MeToo/Weinstein allegations, "you went up to a strange man's hotel room at night? What did you think was going to happen? A game of monopoly?"

While that could be true, I would hope her attorneys would've determined what evidence was floating around first before filing suit as they are presumably working on contingency. It's bad for business to get 1/3 of $0.

Not so much on The Motte since it's a, uh, motley crew around here, but the real life correlation between "Free Palestine" and the rest of the lib-left omni-cause is remarkable. Like when I see people in real life with that bumper sticker or slogan somewhere, I have a very solid guess where they stand on the 2nd amendment, trans stuff, DEI, Elon Musk, immigration enforcement, and datacenters. I'm even confident they were in favor of mandatory masking, vaccine mandates, government suppression of "misinformation," and believing the lab leak hypothesis to be a racist conspiracy theory. As you say, Palestine is now a major axis that all topics revolve around.

The other day I saw an old white guy (either elder Boomer or last Silent) driving in a Prius and he had a "Free Palestine" sticker, a rainbow flag sticker, and a sticker that was an impenetrable wall of text (I couldn't even make out what it said--it was the meme about leftist memes to a T). I can't track him down to prove it (well, it's a rural area, it's possible I could see him again and ask), but I have a good guess at the rest of his beliefs.

A grand jury has to find probable cause that a crime has been committed, which is a lesser standard than preponderance.

I was referring to service I've received in the US and agreeing that he had perhaps been in Japan too long and forgotten what US service was like.
