the drawing of a forbidden orange cat..

Since we're out of the sight of the all seeing eye of Mordor Reddit admins (and this is the small scale questions thread), would you mind giving a TL;DR what that was about?

they deployed some account wide permanent unappealable fingerpriny/ip address bans to people caught placing orange pixels on the dramacat.

Man, I've seen people do some petty stuff but that really takes the cake.

Thank you. The site is now actually usable.

Alternatively, it's all the worst parts of having a small child with the additional downside that when they "grow up", people will get another one.

I happen know quite a few Brazilian nationals and expats due to a hobby. I’ve not once heard them blame Europe or US for their problems. When they’ve talked about the issues, they blame the local politicians and general poverty.

I’m pretty sure your experience is explained by the three letter term ”NGO”.

A quarter of German households use oil for heating

Not for long at this rate.

This is where I'd smugly point out that there's one big difference between the war in Ukraine and the Standard War Template: the aggression is Russians (the goddamn Russians!) and they're blowing up white people (the horror!)

There's a much more relevant difference: The Russians are blowing up culturally similar people just 1000 km away and they outright announced we would be next. A lot of Americans keep forgetting that Ukraine isn't some distant country but right next to a lot of western world, namely Europe.

In this case the bar is incredibly low: Didn't attack another country with the explicit intention of annexing it and didn't threaten several other countries that you're going to conquer them? Ok, you're good.

Ukraine may not be super good but Russia's doing all it can to act as a stereotypical comic book villain.

Sure. You'll be more relaxed and less stressed, at least if you go to a proper sauna and not one of those abominations that don't allow throwing water on the rocks. Also better make it longer than 5 minutes since having to hurry negates the whole point of it being relaxing.

Unless European houses are typically uninsulated with leaky windows, it's not likely to be much better there.

I've never felt as cold as indoors in Germany in early March. It was quite a shock for someone who was used to -25C outdoors temperatures barely affecting indoor temperature due to decent insulation and central heating (that I always have to turn way down to avoid boiling inside).

I have no problem believing f.ex. the local Finnish media is biased (ironically often slightly on the pro-Russian side until Russia went out of their way to burn every bridge they possibly could). Claiming that they're controlled by some US body is some next level conspiracy theory stuff, though.

As evidenced infamously by the ripped tires in the first week or two of the invasion. Sure, you can store a tank for 50 years. Good luck keeping the rubber parts still up to spec without regular maintenance, and we all know how good Russia is at such maintenance.

It used to get pretty cold even in Southern Finland. Then global warming happened and now we’re lucky to get a solid snow cover that lasts even some weeks. The highest electricity demand (natural gas is practically never used for heating / power here) is in late december / early january while the coldest weather is more likely to hit only after that, so heat pumps would generally work well enough.

If you intend to make a claim about US media, you should say so instead of writing about "western news media". The latter clearly includes European medias and trying to claim they are "controlled by CIA" is outright conspiracy theory stuff.

Little Boy would qualify as an unusually small tactical nuke in the modern context

I don't think this is correct. Browsing wikipedia indicates that if anything, Little Boy (15 kt) is slightly on the higher side of yields (many which can be dialed down to around 1 kt or less).

Moreover, this isn't Norway - even going back centuries there has always been a non-trivial proportion of ethnically English people at least as 'swarthy' as Meghan. Personally, I did not realise that Meghan was officially black

I doubt Meghan would be considered black in Norway either. She certainly wouldn’t here in Finland.

I'm pretty sure you got users mixed up there. I have no trans colleague...

Biden himself hinted USA is going to do "bring about an end to Nord Stream 2"

It'd be redundant (and risky) for USA to sabotage Nord Stream 2, as it was killed and buried the day Russia attacked Ukraine. Trying to continue the certification would be a political suicide in Europe unless Russia faces a complete regime change. It's Nord Stream 1 and the related continued dependence on Russian gas that has been the problem.

Why would I as a Finn care about some Anglo consensus? Yes, Scholz has been trying to sell out the rest of EU (although not nearly to the same extent as Schröder) but he’s far from having the final say about Nord Stream 2.

through what I assume is steel

The pipeline is concrete plated steel: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Nord_Stream_pipe_in_Kotka.jpg

Methane needs air to burn and explosion in particular requires a mixture of methane and oxygen with some container to prevent the gas from dissipating first. There is no air 100 meters below the surface and nothing to keep the pressure above the surface.

Why would the Russians blow up their own pipeline that they control?

Because Putin benefits from sowing confusion among Europeans. He also gives a signal that Russia can do the same to any other pipelines or cables in the sea.

What's best for Russia has long been irrelevant here. Putin goes with what's best for his personal aims and nobody in power dares to go against him (at least yet).

in Europe grudges are not so persistently held, especially if they happen to become very inconvenient due to changing political realities

Not least because a typical European country has historical reason to have a grudge against most of their neighbours. Acting on all of those would obviously be a huge negative when it comes to economic and other prosperity.

The easy exercise is to try and solve exam questions from n years ago.

It was common practise in most courses to provide the last few years exams with the correct answers to students as practise material back when I was studying in university in Finland around the turn of the millennium. Is this not the case in US?

Russia has demonstrated that if it had the capacity, it would be an existential threat to all of Eastern Europe. It’s thus in most of those nations self interest to make it damn sure that Russia cannot achieve that capacity in the future.
