The only thing that can protect Poland from Russia is nuclear weapons. If Poland is worried about having to fight Russia alone (in some nightmare scenario where NATO has disintegrated), they need nuclear weapons.

As Ukraine is proving right now - having decent conventional army is also useful. USSR lost in Afghanistan, Russia lost the First Chechen War, USA lost multiple wars against enemies without nuclear weapons.

then Russia loses the conventional war and starts a nuclear war

Second is not guaranteed and escalates it into global conflict.

In the nightmare scenario where NATO is gone and it's every state for themselves, the Poles get turned into a Russian satellite regardless of what conventional forces they have. What good are tanks if the enemy can raze your cities in minutes?

There is also intermediate position with Poland in situation where Ukraine is right now.

Many worries about MtF are about males getting access to females spaces and overpowering them due to psychical power greater than woman have (sports have the least emotionally charged and the most objective case of that).

This does not apply to FtM.

Also how many FtM and MtF are there?

If you never were a multimillionaire, you can not honestly claim to restore harm done to you you should become one. When it's grievous bodily harm (say, you lose your hand, or get cancer) it may be different, because loss of life or quality of life is very hard to repair with money, and even to approach it one needs a lot of money. But here it's not the case

Claim that the same harassment is more damaging to richer people is absurd. If anything, richer people have more ability to shield from harassment.

So at best, whether someone would make a deal to exchange $x for harassment is irrelevant.

not really

If typical person in such situation would not take it at all and it would be awful deal then compensation is too small (say, 5$ for cutting off both hands)

If for typical person in such situation it would be amazing deal (1 billion for cutting out single finger of a left foot) then compensation is overly large.

If deal would be not going in either extreme then compensation is sane (though still may be overly large and overly small).

the shoelace thing isn't something I pulled out of my butt

I am definitely unaware

it's a meme based on an actual BATF ruling

What was the actual ruling? Have they ruled that actual shoelace was a machine gun?

eventually

This will likely turn into a bigger story.

“So, if you are thinking about expenses that are, say, above $100 million, we should have a chat about that,”

that part is DEFINITELY insane

When I was keeping track of expenditure on a multi-million punt project back in the day, I certainly couldn't have got away with "here's the list of emojis by which we approved that £100,000 for buying equipment that time, dunno when exactly".

that is also insane - but not emoji part part - the "lol, we have not recorded what was actually approved by whom"

who all have online LDRs with some Ukrainian chatbot with pretty pictures to back it up

If such law would be passed I bet that you would not even need a chatbot - I expect that there would be enough interest on both sides (ranging from treating it as actual relationship to very thinly disguised prostitution).

my government has literally been warning people about possible blackouts

Which one? Not sure whether in Poland risk is lower or whether is the same or greater and government is more incompetent (or yours is more panicking)

Can you link it? If you have contact to author - maybe add post mentioning it as a threadmark to the original thread?

According to ACOUP it is worse in humanities as you will not be even employable after going through this.

In theory, these responsibilities are usually supposed to add up to about 20 hours a week, though there is a lot of variability from week to week and assignment to assignment. I actually kept track of my work hours in the first year of my PhD and found they ranged from 60 to 80 hours a week and that was with all the tricks I had learned to read and work faster during my MA (for comparison, I rarely felt seriously stressed about schoolwork during my undergraduate degree, which I finished in three years)

(...)

And yes, every graduate student will come up with a whole host of reasons why they are special and the job fairy will favor them, but the numbers don’t lie: you’re not special and the job fairy died years ago.

(...)

At least flagellants, in theory, got to go to heaven as the reward for their self-destructive purification. The only thing pursuing a PhD in the humanities offers is the opportunity to go on the academic job market, which is frankly probably closer to hell at this point.

(...)

So You Want To Go To Grad School (in the Academic Humanities)?

(...)

Have you tried wanting something else?

I assume stupidity and zero effort and that they found already cropped clip on Twitter or similar place and reposted it.

Maybe they were more malicious and less lazy and stupid.

Nuclear weapons are better for all defensive scenarios.

  1. but harder to obtain

  2. Not for all. You will not use nukes over minor incursion.

  3. I am not claiming that having decent conventional army is preferable to having nukes.

As we started from Poland: I am pretty sure that what was done to obtain this weapons would be glaringly insufficient to obtain nukes and enough ICBM/submarines/silos to act as counter to Russian invasion.

And conventional army would still be needed anyway.

"slavery" is not a generic word for "bad thing".

I ask because I never understood women's affectuation with lipstick. In almost all cases, it makes them uglier.

I asked some time ago - and got reply that many woman use lipstick and I am not noticing it.

So out of all cases where you noticed lipstick it seems to be making them uglier.

You can be wrong about them looking better without it.

You may be correct that for you they would look less ugly, but this does not apply to others.

You may not notice other lipstick use.

The British have been cocooned quite safely in their little island as well.

UK was bombed a bit during WW II (total death count lower than single big German massacre in occupied areas).

USA mainland was technically actually bombed during WW II with some civilian death - 6 in total ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incendiary_balloon#Fu-Go ). But it is extreme nitpicking.

Compare with Belarus (occupied by USSR at that time) where 25% of population died/was murdered, or Poland where 16% of population was killed/murdered during war.

I'm sure it was not flimsier than the Allied explanation for invading Iran or Iceland.

You are wrong.

Invading Poland by USSR in alliance with Third Reich Germany was done for much, much worse reasons.

And even if that claim would be true, it still does not explain why explicitly condemning the Yalta Treaty would be bad.

I am genuinely frustrated by this common sentiment that the more murders you carry out, the more monstrous you are. Maybe that's true if we're talking about murdering one person versus murdering their whole family, but when we're working with a scale that is beyond emotional comprehension for most (all?) people, I don't think the distinction is important.

Murdering 2 000 vs murdering 2 000 000 000 is beyond my emotional comprehension (if all of them lived far away and were not known to me and my friends and had no strong connection to them).

Nevertheless someone murdering 2 000 000 000 is far more monstrous than someone murdering 2 000 000 or 2 000.

If I have to accept the label of Holocaust denier to have this discussion, then fine. I don't care. My point is that I don't understand why getting details wrong about a historical event is a moral failing and that people who do it should be "damned to hell."

Depends on kind of detail. Bunch of Germans tried to murder/enslave my gradfathers and grandmothers and my entire ethic group. My parents lived in area "liberated" by Red Army fighting with their former ally. Nowadays Russia is invading neighbour country and accusing them of rampant Nazism. (It degenerated into ukro-jewish-nazi-satanism-sim3cardinism since that time).

See also a related "mistake"

It is kind of thing where historical inaccuracy has a real chance to end with me being dead/oppressed/enslaved. Got significantly lower as Russia fails in Ukraine and Germany fails to spend this promised 100 000 000 000 euro for military. But still, that is likely one of easiest ways to get a lot of people irritated and scared.

Though I would reserve "damned to hell" for denialists of communist/nazi mass murder.

Can that be made illegal too, since it betrays a desire to bang minors?

For start, having actual sex with 17 years old is likely to be legal in many places. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Age_of_consent#/media/File:Age_of_Consent_-_Global.svg

that no matter what you are doing the most efficient form will always be whatever the train equivalent for the field is

is it entire interesting part? Or have they got interesting examples?

If you live in the UK or Germany, uh… I’m sorry. If I was living there and couldn’t afford a plane ticket out, I’d get some of those charcoal burners and maybe tape for the windows.

Plane to where? Also, Germany seems unlikely to get to "charcoal burners" stage.

the fact that someone won't take a deal can't actually tell us anything

If typical person would not take the deal it tells us that compensation is not drastically overvalued.

For comparison, that's equivalent to the maximum compensation for spending 100 years imprisoned on false charges in some states (...) It is absurd to argue that the former should payout more than the latter.

It is also possible that compensation for wrongfully convicted are really low.

And if it was self-sabotage by Jones it does not count, for obvious reasons.
