Does boiling actually kill nutrition?

Yes, heating anything up that much is going to destroy all sorts of compounds.

I can't be bothered to steam them, and boiling is one of the easiest ways to heat them up

Steaming is just boiling with a basket on top.

Nothing wrong with frozen, and as you say the nutritional content is pretty close to fresh-picked, but idk why anyone would ever boil them. That's definitely gonna kill both nutrition and flavor. Steaming is preferred in every case I can think of.

Haven't had a microwave in ten years so idk about that part. Maybe fine.

And, oddly, french toast.

The peak is from your own garden. There's nothing like dinner being almost ready and sending your two year old out to the yard to pick some tomatoes and basil. Every time we do that I can almost see the glowing border of the memory as I'll experience it in my old age. The bright colors, the dirt between her toes, her hair in the sunshine. Were I Japanese, I'd see ghostly cherry petals blowing. And it tastes great, too.

ETA: almost everyone should learn to cook.

My autism insists upon finding out what sort of exceptions you had in mind here. Not looking to argue; just more curious than I probably should be.

Definitely gonna give that a watch. Love the genre.

Translation: She was low-status/suspect enough that when she said something they ran it through a filter which would otherwise have not been engaged. Also, to be clear, she was leveraging this intentionally and clever for it.

Men of a certain age and specifically-low testosterone levels. Beards, beer, bacon, fedoras?

I was hoping that, and also that he'd then become the stodgy nemesis of a fraternity of plucky misfits until they ultimately earn his grudging admiration, ideally somehow involving a big concert in front of the whole student body. Alas, life is rarely so kind.

Can't wait for the next headline about how Ukrainian President Zhuéłzñeūesc̣qkyieayï has gone to visit the President of Türquïyẏyè (Japan still just Japan).

What's been so interesting to me here is the way it's being minimized by many on the left.

NYT:

Martyn Hammersley, an emeritus professor of educational and social research at the Open University in Britain and an expert on research methodology, contacted Cambridge in 2023 with questions about what he said was significant plagiarism in some of Arday's work. In an interview with The Times last week, he lamented that the political and racially charged debate has overshadowed important questions about academic rigor.

"We now have a public scandal in which right and left confront another, so that there is not much space for sensible discussion of the issues," he said.

Cofnas, I think correctly, translates this as "We now have a situation where the right is demonstrably 100% correct and the left is 100% wrong, so really there's no way to have a sensible discussion." (via twitter)

The particularly interesting bits to me are,

  1. The stranglehold of the left on political discourse seems to be slipping. It seems more and more common lately that issues which the left would like to sweep under the rug instead get enough mainstream exposure that they can't actually do so. Sure, there's tons of comments like Hammersley's which fall back on their feminine strategy of rolling their eyes at how uncouth the right is being by continuing to hammer on topics which the left would much rather see treated as not important actually and impolite to talk about, but that doesn't seem to be working any more. I think this is nearly 100% downstream of Elon purchasing twitter, and I'm increasingly horrified by a hypothetical counterfactual world where he didn't.
  2. I didn't think I had much respect left to lose for the academy, but from what I can tell Arday would have continued to get away with this indefinitely no matter how egregious and flamboyant his fraud. I don't know that, of course, but to the degree that it's true I'm surprised to feel something dying inside of me where I thought nothing still lived.

I don't recall any calls to violence and thought the post was appropriate, though I only skimmed it.

Short summary: OP asked whether there is any hope of 'the right' (which he defined in detail, though questionably; really I think he meant something more like 'ethno-nationalism') has any hope of organizing and asserting itself anywhere in the West before it's 'too late' and demographic change makes it impossible to achieve its ends through democratic means.

Certainly an interesting and timely question.

Thanks, that makes some sense to me. The experience of feeling like you've discovered a way to be extra-effective, and especially outpace others who aren't as clever, is a good one.

Anesthesia is no trivial matter. The LD50 is only a median measure and you never know who's at work today with massive sleep debt, a bad hangover, and a congenital heart condition.

I have a family member who plays a ton of PoE, and for a few weeks I tried to get into it too. Didn't grip me at all; just kinda felt like moving my dude around the screen spamming attacks with little to no meaningful variation or tactics. Boss fights were a little better. Some kind of event was running which helped me advance more quickly. Growing gardens or some such.

Anyway I know it's a very popular game and a lot of people -- including some with at least decent taste -- enjoy it. But I can't figure out what anyone sees in it. Unless you're a maximal autist you'll just be going with a build someone else developed (the overhead on figuring that out yourself is prohibitive) and the actual gameplay just seems... rote. Easily automatable.

So what do you like about it so much? Is the genre just not for me? It occurred to me that it would almost be more fun as a clicker game.

Now, what do you figure is the outcome if you tell the Japanese that thing about reptilian overlords?

Well I'm sure it-

Oh. Oh, my.

Oh, yeah, that is indeed a surprise to me. May check it out this coming weekend.

A gentleman always maintains a staircase for his cannon.

The veterans I've known have not had such great experiences with the VA.

What would you guess the proportion of "fundamentally curious" people is in society at large? My guess is that they're a statistical nullity.

I think it's largely an ethnic phenomenon related to both hereditary IQ and cultural inclination, and varies widely among demographic segments. As demographics change and culture changes with them, that number is surely shrinking.

What is the solution? No more peacekeeping missions, anti terrorist actions and special military operations, but retvrn to great wars ending in glorious victories, accomplishments so shining that every young man with motivation and drive would want to wear uniform and be part of winning team.

Well idk about that.

But as to the rest, anecdotally, as a business owner I have myself experienced the lumpenwave. At this point I almost can't imagine hiring anyone younger than about 30, and even most of those in their mid-30s are nearly lost causes. No, it's not a compensation issue. I pay a lot of money to my people. Thing is, the zoomers who get that money will work two or three months and then take the rest of the year off instead of getting ahead. And we're already talking about the tiny margin of those who are even capable of working reliably in the first place.

These kids have zero ambition, awful in-person social skills, no apparent sense that all of life isn't just like school where you show up and slack off and get passed.

And, yeah, the constant slipping into device-touching.

Interesting topic but not interested in sorting through machine output, and even less interested in talking to one with you as a middleman.

I've done "look at the ridiculous thing the outgroup did this week" type posts before but I always include substantial original commentary and, where I can, links so that people can look into the matter themselves.

Yes, overall an acceptable answer, and I could work with that.

unlike the peoples of yesteryear Germany knew better as they had technology and education

Glad you said this because I very badly want to take issue with it. Clearly, 'technology and education' have nothing to do with 'knowing better'. This would seem to be a total non-sequitur. Technology makes you more powerful and you can do whatever you want with that power. Education depends entirely upon what that education is, and any academy is easily coopted by virulent strains of politics.

Disorderly conduct for saying a word someone asked you to say.

I'm sorry, I thought this was America.
