I don't think this is a good methodology. Understanding HBD at a functional level doesn't require you to actually be able to plot out the curves or anything. You can understand the basics of compound interest without being able to actually calculate out how much more you'll end up paying over the term of the loan by hand.

It was sub dedicated to observing and sometimes stirring up drama on the internet. That drama is easily extracted by slaughtering the sacred cows of the blue tribe and this sub was more than willing to do so although not out of any real allegiance to the red tribe left it afoul of the reddit moderation staff. While /r/drama was getting pushed off reddit some volunteers made use of some freeware website software to build rdrama.net, and to everyone's surprise over a year later the site is thriving proving a model for how communities can leave reddit and survive. Some of the relationship is just dramanaughts being happy that others are escaping reddit's gravity and some of it is because there was always a surprisingly large overlap between the user base. /u/Tracingwoodgrains being a well known example but many people you wouldn't even assume had a drama alter ego. It makes a kind of sense, culture war happenings are pretty dramatic and dramatic things often touch on the culture war, both places have a kind of anti-dogma ethos that holds appeals to authority in contempt.

I'm normally quite good at decoupling but the whole point is that we don't have this choice. It's not just a matter of efficiency, it's make fat people no longer exist or just be worse off for every marginal increase in obesity. We, at the moment, cannot mitigate the totally natural impacts of obesity. My disgust is totally irrelevant to diabetes and heart disease. The choice in the world that exists is not difficult.

Why do you think people are rooting for them?

I sympathize with someone who says, "if I call a trans person by his preferred pronoun, it feels like I am lying."

This isn't quite it. I don't "feel" as though I'm lying. I am actually lying. I am saying things I don't believe for the sake of someone else's feelings. That is a lie.

But recently I realized the term passing is actually transphobic according to the definitions laid out.

Yes, the concept of passing is contradictory with many other trans related concepts but it's often not seen because the whole of the trans movement is half dozen totally incompatible frameworks glued together while every tries their best to ignore the seams.

I really don't like this line of reasoning, it dismisses a lot of very valid criticism of the movement as mindless revulsion.

I've gone into detail in the past. There are many contradictory positions.

Gender as essential doesn't square with most of modern feminism and very few trans activists are willing to disavow feminism preferring to just outcast the feminists who noticed that their movements are incompatible.

Any attempt to actually justify self-id undermines the entire concept of transitioning.

There are deep epistemic issues with even making a claim like "I feel like a woman", people only get one subjective experience and thus have no tool that could possible differentiate between

  • genuinely feeling the way that women feel

  • incorrectly believing that they feel the way women feel

This last one of probably the thing that frustrates me most about the whole space and what worries me about teaching children these things. There is no internal or external way to falsify the idea that you might be transgendered. If I put myself in the shoes of a kid that doesn't quite fit in, or hell myself at that age if I had been exposed to this meme, I don't know how they get a better than 50/50 chance of resisting this meme. I am not confident I would not have made a life ruining mistake and stubbornly stuck to it. This possibility haunts me, I think in a few decades we're going to look back on thousands of mangled young men and women.

It's a valid answer but not a very stable position to rely on as disgust is often found to be malleable or something people should get over if the utility gain is large enough. I'm deeply suspicious of anyone who characterizes one of my positions in a way that places it on unsolid ground be they ally or foe. If the main objection to eating cockroaches is that it's gross repackaging the bugs to be more palatable or hidden in other food stuff can be considered to have addressed the concern. You will not address my concern with transgenderism by making them pass more effectively.

I'm not one to like celebrity culture and not a brit so perhaps I'm just maximally not the target audience, but I've never understood the point of the royal family after the end of monarchy. What is the actual difference between her passing and like a Kardashian passing? As far as I know her greatest feat was being born.

I'm not sure if you're referencing this intentionally but some male writers did do something like this and it was quite controversial. I had just searched out the first article I could find on the subject without much care to the content besides that it got the basic details right and man is it a funny read. It tries to thread the needle on why publishing under a male sounding pseudonym to target a male dominated audience is good and empowering but publishing under a female pseudonym to captured a female dominated audience is bad and cannot be legitimized. The idea that people shouldn't judge books by their author's genitals is not addressed.

the only difference is that in a future utopian society they will be who throws the best parties, who can create the most creative and lavish gifts to give away and climbing the status hierarchy by being most well-liked or admired or talk of the town.

One of the things I've learned from talking with socialists is that to many what you describe is paradise despite it sounding like a hell to me.

Everyone responds to drugs somewhat differently. I'm assuming by try you're implying you haven't ever had any before? One of the several reasons first timers are recommended supervision is because some people do not respond well. To me it is an effect similar to a high does of cannabis edibles, I'd be willing to have some in your scenario because I know what I'm getting. Others have different reactions.

One trick if you decide to go through with it, mush them in something like a three musketeers bar, it greatly helps with the texture and makes you less likely to puke.

These are good pieces of advice for if @badciviilization is mainly concerned with a meditative experience. I will note though that if they're using it more recreationally I've never met a mushroom lover that didn't recommend nature and greenery.

done in darkness (sensitivity to light increases dramatically), in bed possibly with headphones listening to classical music, with locked doors

I would not recommend this set up if the goal is recreation.

Do you think the success of the American psycho was because Patrick Bateman was seen as a good person? The shows makes it pretty clear that none of the main cast are virtuous. This is not unusual in fiction, after all, All happy families are alike, but every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way. Happy is boring.

We've moved into "noticible minority" as a size estimate here and you agree that main characters don't need to be virtuous to be interesting. Is it magnitude thing? How much of the r&m fan base needs to think Rick is an admirable character for you to use the popularity to make your prognosis of society?

You'd be surprised. Context hugely changes the experience. One of the most pleasant afternoons I've had so far was taking a gram and wandering downtown Chicago in the summer with a couple friends. You don't want to be in the danger or navigating complicated situations but you're not totally helpless.

parties as a competition and enjoyed in a patrick bateman business card style dominance sense would leave very little left of socializing that I enjoy.

I'm steelmanning "Drag Kids" the best I can come up with is "this is a new manifestation of an old and widespread form of child abuse, namely, using children for adult entertainment

I'm not fan of drag kids but is this honestly the best steelman you can come up with? This is not a moral failure but one of creativity. Is it really so hard for you to believe some people have swallowed the lgbt+ narrative whole? These papers are bothering to print it and many people are quite credulous to their dictates. You think it's more likely that this many parents are abusing their children than that they genuinely have bought the meme that this is a totally harmless opportunity for their children to explore their indentities in a a manner they've been assured is harmless.

Have you never socialized with other people as a group, for the purpose of socialization and wondering how you can make it better next time?

I'm not positive what "for the purpose of socialization" means so I'm going to assume it just means "for fun" correct me if I'm interpreting this wrong. Yes, when something doesn't go well at a party I try to improve that aspect with the next party. I do not think of this as a ~"struggle or competition", I think viewing it that way is a path straight down sociopathy.

Replace partying with hanging out with friends if you want to quibble with the choice of words. The point is that in a utopia what it means to compete can be entirely different and much more pro-social than what it means to compete in other societies.

I don't think framing this as a competition works at all. I think you're trying to combine two things, friendship/kinship and the only status hierarchy that remains when you remove all other meaningful competitions. I don't think kinship survives this merge. Competitions are gamed, when there is only one competition all energy is put into optimizing that competition. I've been to social events that are thinly veiled status competitions, they are soulless affairs but they're still good at raising status if used right but tiling over the social landscape with them would be a true loss.

My basic point is this, replacing myriad discrete status games with one central status game raises the stakes of that game to a maximum height. socialization based hierarchies are popularity contests and the real world example of heightened and globalized popularity contests isn't who throws the best board game night, it's politics. It's the Clintons, Trumps, Stalins and Maos of the world that win. Socialist don't eliminate all hierarchy, they make it so that only one hierarchy matters and it's perhaps the most brutal and illegible hierarchy that exists.

I can't speak for everyone but I really like the reddit style branching comment/post structure.

This is mostly how I model this and a good writeup on it. A minor nitpick that I find important:

People should be validated and feel positive about their chosen identities without being shamed by society.

I don't think this is something that should be elevated to an identity. or more specifically identity is a strange concept in general. Do you remember the hubbub about disabled person vs person with a disability? Disabled person is considered bad because it raises the disability to the level of identity while person with disability is preferred because it doesn't. The way someone dresses is about as surface level as it gets, while I agree it shouldn't be something discriminated against and it would be better if no one cared when men wore dresses. This is all of course suspiciously similar to the other culture war rail, transgenderism. What's the actual blue tribe model of the separation of cross dressers/drag queens and transwomen?

At that point you might as well be on discord then.

I strongly disagree, Reddit lets you follow specific conversation threads much more easily and collapse/skip threads you aren't interested in. That being said what you ask for is available at https://www.themotte.org/comments albeit not segregated into topic threads.

edit: I will say I do find the /comments version useful as the thread matures and I'm just looking for updates on certain discussions. Early on I like the reddit style structure because it keeps everything in context but it does become harder to keep up with where the new posts are towards the end of the week.

normal water works too, just not as well in my experience.

I'll believe EA will unseat wokism when I see it. I like them quite a bit more but not infinitely. I very much doubt this will happen though, registering a sub 5% prediction and probably much lower.
