As a related anecdote, I visited LA on business a few years ago. One of my counterparties suggested I go for a morning jog at the Santa Monica beach. My enthusiasm for an early morning beach run was quickly snuffed out by the litter, the homeless guys bunked on the dunes, and the cops sweeping the beach for needles.

I have zero faith that an authoritarian government would implement anything I might consider utopian.

I will second MeetUp. Met some really cool people through various hobby meetups.

ChatGPT de Beregerac?

Black Smoke Rising is an absolute banger.

I can't say I'm all that bothered by a decline in the number of humanities major. As you said, humans will continue to do art, philosophize, and reflect. We were doing it long before there was such a thing as a university or even a college.

That said, I have taken some online courses and I think there's something lost doing a class via Zoom or whatever vs doing one in person. I found the discussions in my in-person classes much more productive than in my zoom courses. (This may also be a function of investment, I'm willing to be persuaded here.) I took an ethics course and the online video sessions were dull and boring, hardly any debates. The professor had to start calling on people to get responses. I even tried taking on the role of shit-stirrer, giving answer I knew flew against the conventional ethical wisdom of the group, just to see if I could things moving but to no avail. By contrast, the in-person courses I took at this same facility with some of the same cohort were much more lively and animated.

Thank you for writing this. This is the response I couldn't figure out how to properly phrase.

One should never underestimate the male ability to completely not notice an approach by a woman.

Yeah, I received a few mix tapes from girls high school. Since I was known in my friend-group as the opposite of "with it", I just figured they were politely trying to expand my musical horizons.

Was this co-worker attractive? Workplace rumors always seem to spring up around young and attractive women, in my experience. For example, I once had a co-worker who was, bluntly, an absolute smokeshow. When I took up at the acting office manager for a spell, practically every other woman in the office stopped by my office to tell me about some supposed office affair this young lady was having. "I saw her coming out of such-and-such's office!" "She got off the train Monday morning with such-and-such!" "She had lunch with such-and-such three days in a row and then I saw them leave together on Friday!" I suppose it's possible I was an extra in a porn movie and that this lady really was a raging nymphomaniac but I'm pretty sure it was just run-away imaginations on the part of a bunch of jealous co-workers.

Your arguement is that media has become more hostile to Christianity in particular over the last 15 years? I'm not debating you, I just want to understand your position on this.

One things I've noticed, at least in America, is that "rational" has become shorthand for "agrees with me" in mainstream discourse. I don't know if the CCP has the same issue. Anyone here who understands the CCP better than I do care to chime in?

there was one post on social media about how sheep were killed for wool

Real or photoshopped, "you have a fundamental misunderstanding of how yarn is made" remains one of my favorite internet punchlines ever created.

I'm genuinely surprised at both Michael and Father Fortes as written in the books. Butcher's treatment of Christianity is possibly one of the most respectful I've come across in modern secular media in my entirely life.

Over 15 years ago shouldn't count.

Why?

Daredevil is a version of a character who was a Christian over 15 years ago.

True, but the writers of the modern incarnation of the character could have just as easily chose gloss over or downplay his Catholicism.

There are enough references to Book reading & studying the Bible that I assumed he's a Christian of some stripe.

I really enjoyed the first three seasons. Season 4 and the online seasons were significantly weaker.

I'm not quite certain what your definition of fundamentalist / deeply religious is here, but here are some positively portrayed Christians off the top of my head:

  • Harriet Hayes from Studio 60 (2006-2007). She's shown to have pre-marital sex and considers posing nude at one point so she is admittedly a bit of a stretch.

  • Detective Almond from Backstrom (2015) is a born-again Christian who works as a volunteer pastor in a local community church.

  • Matt Murdock in Daredevil(2015). A flawed but ultimately good man. He's Catholic and often seeks counsel from his parish priest.

  • Shepherd Book from Firefly (2002) is a pastor, though it's also implied he found religion after a life of dirty deeds, so your mileage may vary here.

  • Michael Carpenter from The Dresden Files book series.

  • Graham Hess in Signs (2002) though we meet him in the middle of a crisis of faith.

  • Desmond Doss in Hacksaw Ridge, but it's a biopic, so that may not count.

EDIT: Oh, and I forgot Shirley from Community (2009-2015). She's got her flaws (prone to gossip) but she's depicted as a genuinely good person who does her best to do the right thing.

I know that a forum supposedly comprised of high-iq journeypeople probably doesn't give a shit about how to make a great, grilled hamburger.

Us token midwits are here for it though.

Macallan is a sherry-casked Speyside, so you might try one in the same category, like Aberlour. If you want to branch out a little bit from there, go with something from Dahlwinnie or Glenfarclas.

You might also consider looking around for a whiskey bar. Most decent ones will do flights to let you get a good sense of what you might like.

Edit: I should clarify these aren't "high-end" or expensive scotches but they are pretty accessible if you're not a regular Scotch drinker and I think they're both great value for the money, Glenfarclas in particular.

That is a hoax, it's not normal or acceptable behavior that should be tolerated.

Okay, so what should we all do about it?

What are you looking for in a scotch?

Bud or Blue Moon all the way. Coors is terrible and Miller isn't much better.

Used to work with a Wisconsinite who was also disappointed with Leinie but raved about Spotted Cow.

...and now I've decided on an avatar

I'm equally okay with both this incident and your hypothetical story-title being classified as exaggerations instead of hoaxes. If you can find me some evidence the Crew 319 is really an ADL plant, then I'll call it a hoax.

Hoax calls to mind the Smollet incident or some kind of false flag. "Over-reaction" or "exploiting an opportunity" seems a better descriptor.
