Justice lets us align virtue with self-interest. That’s good because the latter is much easier to measure. I think most positions of trust work this way, and I find it unfair to apply a different standard just to this one.
I say this despite thinking the guy should lose his election. He should lose because his competition is more agreeable, less impulsive, less hateful. But not because he failed a hypothetical test.
Neat!
You’ve got a couple typos (“vaul”, “REDACTED}”, some missing punctuation) and numerous run-on sentences which needed a semicolon rather than another comma. Other than that, technically solid.
I do think I enjoyed your previous post more. In that one, explaining the premise worked to amplify the character’s isolation. Here, it just breaks up the tension. Contrast an SCP: Procedures go at the front to build tension, then the expedition logs deliver.
The lovecraft influence was obvious and appropriate. Have you read Vandermeer’s Annihilation? It’s a masterclass in sketching something that transcends procedure.
Why would Reddit be a good barometer?
For the record, I put money on Trump as soon as he survived the assassination attempt.
I wrote that comment to wade into the ongoing “astroturf” debate. Given our userbase, there was a lot of countersignaling insistence that any positive coverage had been bought. No one could actually like Harris that much.
While I wouldn’t have called her “great,” she was so much more credible than mecha-Biden. Trump fans might not remember how absolutely miserable Democrats had been over the preceding month or so. I suspect this was enough for most of them to feel a rush of relief.
My mom still has a painted Harris/Walz rock (?) in her back garden.
I genuinely wonder if that’s more common on modern social media. A lot of the userbase is too young to ascribe special significance to 9/11?
Weird flex, but okay.
Why does everyone keep saying he’d like to murder them?
Even the phone call, which we somehow only got secondhand, says he was hoping her children would die.
Again, awful, but a different vibe.
No, I was saying that wasn’t contained in any of the screenshots, which made me wonder if I was missing something.
It seems pretty clear that he said something like that in the phone call.
I wasn’t trying to say his initial texts were acceptable. More that they didn’t reflect a specific belief. Like how “I wouldn’t piss on you if you were on fire” doesn’t actually mean “I wish you’d burn to death.”
His remarks on the call are much closer to the latter, and I’ll edit my comment accordingly.
Modhat off:
Wait, is this supposed to be ironic? Assume your opponents are bulverizing, then explain their error?
The whole point of the article, weak as it is, is that conservatives are also alienating young men…but not via idpol. Their leadership is every bit as geriatric and their flagship policy is more interesting to blue-collar boomers than to 20-somethings. And, of course, there’s the economy, which just sort of shambles along.
Democrats are trying a shotgun approach to find out which of these critiques actually hits. I think that’s normal for this point in an election cycle. But it’s also probably a moot point.
Still not really hitting the level of effort expected for a top-level. This is not a link-aggregating site; it’s a discussion forum. Start the discussion!
Thank you. Is there something missing though? I really wish we could see the overlap between those separate screenshots.
I stand by my position. None of these things constitute
essentially laying out the case that Republicans should be shot and killed, and their children murdered in front of them, so that they change their politics.
Maybe that was said in the undocumented phone call?
I think a lot of people fail that standard, even if they have a “stated commitment.” Talk is cheap.
I want to see the full thing. Every site I could find was interleaving the two screenshots with partial quotes and “according to a source…” nonsense.
I don’t think this is the right order.
I think that what Mr. Jones said was disgusting and should torpedo his chances of election. You’re still overreacting.
No, Democrats Don’t Really Want You Dead.
A Democrat joked expressed support for someone shooting one of his coworkers. He did not say he’d do it. He did not speak for his colleagues. He did not mention you and yours. He has not stood by his statements, or otherwise indicated that he actually wants anyone dead.
Now, you can assume the worst for some of those things. But for all of them? People say stupid shit all the time. What makes you say that this time is the one where he really means it?
Coincidentally, this is how long it takes for your facility to produce anything worth shipping.
CW topics go in the CW thread. Or in the Sunday one, if you don’t have any of your own commentary.
Giving up academia because of idpol is like escaping a burning building because you’re worried about getting ash on your shoes.
The economics of postdocs and tenure have not changed. What constitutes polite society amongst your peers has not changed. Every reason you’d have to avoid it is still there, except you might get a welfare payment from Vance for your trouble.
Correlation, causation.
We suborned Japan because we were able to completely restructure their government and economy. How we got to that point was much less important. If we’d applied a Treaty of Versailles, they’d have been back at our throats in twenty years, probably as a Soviet satellite.
I don’t understand it, but there are a crazy number of tech companies purchasing calls to (outdated versions of?) GPT. The corporate market is definitely hot.
I still don’t understand the enshittification model.
There are plenty of reasons to degrade your user experience. Increasing revenue through ads or merch or predatory monetization. Decreasing costs by cutting complicated features and tech support. But the central examples of enshittification aren’t doing those things. They’re paying more to add features that people don’t want. To adopt patterns that don’t seem like they should make more money.
I mean, maybe I’m just wrong. Maybe spamming AI news articles on the lock screen really does get more people to buy Windows. But…why? How?
Recreating the Cultural Revolution to own the libs?

This isn’t brinksmanship.
What kind of resistance? Anti-ICE signs, apparently. Maybe some malicious compliance. Chicago isn’t importing military hardware. It’s not calling for volunteers. It’s not even obstructing the federal agents and troops who are already there. No, the ball is in the President’s court. He holds all the cards, right? He can threaten to make things worse and worse until he gets what he wants.
That’s brinksmanship.
