There aren’t any catalysts which directly boost spells based on STR/DEX, but there are plenty of weapons with the relevant scaling. Moonveil and Dark Moon Greatsword come to mind. If those don’t do it for you, pop on an INT Ash of War. Or do weapon buff.

Love this game so much.

As others have said, mixing combat is fine. Great, even. It’s really nice to have a bow or spell on hand.

What you want to avoid is conflicting Scaling. If you’re investing in STR for a hammer and FTH for incantations, and you get a bow that really wants DEX, then you have to split your points even further. Wouldn’t it be nice if you had a bow that mostly wanted STR, too?

The good news is that Elden Ring is probably the best souls game for mixing and matching. There’s gear which suits (or can be made to suit) any combination of stats. The trick is finding it.

I recommend checking out that castle. You don’t have to clear it, but there’s some really useful stuff around there!

I could have sworn we warned you for posting this exact meme months ago, but I guess we let it slide.

Please lay off the copypasta.

Huh. I really thought you were down near Houston.

  1. Given that I’m already on record as a North Texan, I don’t really want people drawing rings around the Dallas symphony. There’s probably a closer one…

  2. Can’t answer, which makes me feel like a proper peasant.

  3. Complicated by our tax incentives. Random businesses are encouraged to maintain small fields or pastures. I wouldn’t call them “hobby,” but they’re not the main revenue stream. So the nearest farm is probably a dairy 6 mi away.

  4. See point 1.

  5. 3-4 mi.

  6. See point 1.

I finished Jeff Vandermeer’s Southern Reach trilogy last week. Good finale, if a bit weaker than the others. The irrationality of Area X is just less compelling than the anti-rationality it displayed in the first and second books. But I suspect that’s inherent to writing a plot where characters are supposed to do anything rather than have it done to them.

I still absolutely recommend trying the first book for anyone into literary sci-fi or the New Weird or surreality.

Now I’m halfway through Sixteen Ways to Defend a Walled City based on a recommendation from @pbmonster. Five out of five stars so far. It’s such a pure example of what that thread was calling “competency porn,” except it also dodges the excesses which litter the genre. The protagonist is smart and driven and charismatic in a way which makes it clear that he, along with everyone around him, is under tremendous stress. This does wonders for the believability. I’m staying up too late reading it.

It kind of reminds me of a more serious counterpart to the Moist von Lipwig Discworld novel Making Money.

When exactly do you have in mind?

All the trend lines I was seeing with a casual search start earlier. Here’s one shocked by the decline by 2010.

Excellent! I’ll check it out.

Here’s my one and only experience with death note fanfiction THE HIT AND RUN. Don’t bother with the “post that inspired this” tumblr link; the premise should stand on its own.

There’s something about trying to profile someone as racist based largely on his last name…

Then it’s not much of a “default career,” is it?

I think you’re defending the motte to Southkraut’s bailey.

But…Germany also fought Stalin.

Surely there are some former East Germans somewhere in the country, too.

Wait, are you saying countries which fought directly against Stalin are more charitable, or less?

Wait, wasn’t that a South Park plot?

“Directional whoring?” That’s ridiculous and insulting.

None of my half-dozen female cousins are whoring themselves out. None have any overlap between their careers and their relationships.

That’s not because they’re all following the same script, either. One’s an accountant, another works for the government. A third got pregnant in college, but married the guy and started a stable family. She only has a job now that the kid is in school. Not exactly a gold digger.

What’s your justification for insulting the modal Western woman?

I’m really tempted to argue against your points on the merits, but I think it’s more important to talk about the rules. Particularly this one.

If you have to make up an imaginary hypothetical paraphrase for someone, that should be a warning sign. It should make you wonder if you’re getting things quite right. It’s certainly not a good reason to pivot into general-purpose bashing session.

This post looks a lot more like waging the culture war than understanding it.

Please keep it civil, and make your points without the personal attacks.

it seems

Yeah, I’d like to see the numbers on this. I remember thinkpieces in Trump 1 about the number of empty positions, the rate of turnover, etc. Was that normal? Was it any different than the attrition today?

I’m going to bet against the vaccine thing.

Not sure if I believe CBS’s suggestion that it’s a show of annoyance at Trump. But the CNN theory is simple enough. There was some infighting between the two of them and RFK axed both. I find that more plausible than a couple staffers having some sort of rogue policy push.

I’m not seeing the problem with Francophone. Vicky 3 starts in 1830, right? They’ve been doing business in French for longer than the U.S. has existed.

Speaking of which—how likely is it that a pro/anti-slavery culture which has triggered a civil war actually would enact the relevant policy? I would expect it to be near 100%, which is presumably why Paradox hardcoded it. And are there other hardcoded war->policies?

Most of your other mods either look reasonable or are beyond my understanding of the mechanics. You’re going to have to explain what “incorporation” is supposed to represent if you want commentary on those :)

I would say it’s not.

You’d probably get a bunch of knee-jerk reactions writing you off as a stereotypical SJW, so it might be frustrating, but it wouldn’t be against the rules.

Your opinion is just as valid as his. “I hate spending time with racists” is fine. So is “I think racists are shooting themselves in the foot.” Neither of those is booing the outgroup, and neither is building consensus. No one can take your preferences from you.

Anecdotal, but expressing anything anti-Trump is one of the easiest ways to get a bunch of downvotes, in my experience. The only real competition is showing sympathy for trans issues.

No, it’s not. It’s not the reason we bailed on Reddit, either.

But the last point is correct.

Be polite, please.

Edit: now I see the other drama going on. To be clear, your opinion is perfectly defensible. Presenting it in a mocking, inflammatory way is the only problem.

Yeah, SSQ allows culture war topics.

It’s still not for “waging the culture war,” i.e. slinging shit at your outgroup or trying to dredge up drama, but this would be appropriate.

A better fit for the SSQ Sunday thread, surely. Or add more of your own commentary.
