This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.
Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.
We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:

Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.
In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:

Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.

Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.

Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.

Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.

I see no particular reason 'MAGAs' have to choose.
There are rules to that effect. Some of them are relatively new, and various pro-immigration jurisdictions have figured out how to even get those illegally present benefits.
The Amish are deliberately separate from western civilization, but they are not incompatible with it (though there is some friction). The Mormons are part of Western Civilization (and an American group at that). Same for the Scientologists. The Native Americans are an obvious special case; they're not immigrants by any stretch of imagination. But they're also not incompatible with western civilization, because those who were have been killed in various wars. This is all smoke. Trump is a politician, of course he says a lot of words with little meaning. But in the context of a terrorist attack, you can at least point to a general idea of "incompatible with western civilization", and it's not the Amish -- that's being deliberately obtuse.
Eh, no. Nowadays it seems to be Haitians and Somalians that the more strident anti-immigration types oppose most. No worries, they can have as much hate as they need, it's not a conserved quantity.
OK, do that. Then we'll see, first, if these immigrants are problems and second, if they're not, if anti-immigration sentiment remains as strong. Because during Trump 45, I wasn't convinced immigrants were a big problem. But Trump 47 managed to get his opponents to reveal a lot of it, by protecting and attempting to protect so many criminal immigrants from him, and going nuts about termination of Temporary Protected Status instituted for events long past. So now I've got a lot of sympathy for "shut this down until we can figure out what's going on". Tim Walz just pardoned a child-rapist to try to keep him from getting deported; this is nutty behavior. Note that's "child" as in 10 years old, not "child" as in 17 years old.
Obviously there is; they're all immigrants. They're also all from the third world. Most actual white supremacists will just say they don't want non-whites. Trying to tar all anti-immigrant people with the same brush just because the immigrants they're objecting to most are non-white is a transparent rhetorical tactic. Most illegal immigrants are non-white, and the ones causing the most problems are definitely non-white; there's not a lot of violent crime from German visa-overstayers.
