Culture War Roundup for the week of February 16, 2026

This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.

Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.

We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:

  • Shaming.

  • Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.

  • Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.

  • Recruiting for a cause.

  • Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.

In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:

  • Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.

  • Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.

  • Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.

  • Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.

On an ad hoc basis, the mods will try to compile a list of the best posts/comments from the previous week, posted in Quality Contribution threads and archived at /r/TheThread. You may nominate a comment for this list by clicking on 'report' at the bottom of the post and typing 'Actually a quality contribution' as the report reason.

On (1) you just read about random Jewish families with this kind of wealth. Like when Danielle Sassoon resigned it turns out she was Jewish and her family has offshore trusts in the 10s of billions. (2). It’s frowned upon by non Jews. Mathew 19:24 - “it’s easy for a camel to pass thru the eye of the needle; than for a rich man to enter the Kingdom of God” Sure people are less religious today but hoarding money has been frowned up in Western Culture. Carnegie etc have found things to do with their money to benefit their civilization. Western Culture has long been non for being less tribal and familial relations so doing things with money to benefit society is cherished versus hoarding money. Blood historically has meant less to white people. (3). True (4). Not all Jews but it’s always a Jew is like a truism.

So yes there are more examples of Jews hoarding money in clans. Safras, Rothschild, Sassoons. While American fortunes do tend to dissipate over time.

But generally I just like to rant that assimilation never completely happens. Group traits persist that maintain differences between immigrant groups and anglos. The Italians still have a 70% higher crime rate in America than Heritage Americans.

you just read about random Jewish families with this kind of wealth

Well yeah, (non-Haredi) Ashkenazi Jews are rich, because they are intelligent, and intelligent people can make lots of money. That's a very different claim from saying that Jews are uniquely likely to pass down or hoard their wealth. In fact, a list of the countries with the highest private wealth to GDP ratio looks like this:

  1. Hong Kong
  2. Italy
  3. Spain
  4. Switzerland
  5. United States

Israel is down at number 46, between Bahrain and Slovakia.

It’s frowned upon by non Jews.

On this ranking of most charitable countries, Israel outperforms almost every European country on every metric. America and Israel both score highly, most likely because they are both very religious by rich country standards.

So yes there are more examples of Jews hoarding money in clans. Safras, Rothschild, Sassoons.

Here are a list of the wealthiest families:

  1. Ellison - Ashkenazi/Italian, although he explicitly rejects his Jewish heritage
  2. Walton - Anglo-American
  3. Arnault - French and 'devoutly Catholic'
  4. Tata - Indian
  5. Koch - Dutch-American
  6. Ortega - Spanish
  7. Ambani - Indian
  8. Mars - Euro-American, not Jewish
  9. Adani - Indian
  10. Slim - Lebanese

As far as I can tell, all you're doing is combining confirmation bias with a dislike of Jews. None of what you are saying has any factual basis.

You also never explained what exactly you mean by 'really bad things'. I suspect you deliberately elided between the ability to do bad things, and actually doing bad things, which allows you to infer they are committing evil without having to demonstrate it.

Listing countries tells you nothing about who has the wealth in that country. I agree Israel itself has surprisingly small amount of very rich. My guess is it’s because companies have limited ability to really scale there.

The wealthiest families lists seems weird to me and I am not sure how the are separating “family” from “individual”. Why is Ellison a family? Founder is still in charge. Sassoon is notably not on the lists despite reports of a $100b. If you just went richest it would be Jewish. Notable there are not any old American money clans on the lists. Culturally this is a very American thing. Maybe it’s more old world versus new world with building clans. The closest thing to an old-moneyed clan in the US would be the Pritzkers but that’s still not that old.
