I mentioned this in another thread, but I finally have a gaming PC. I am far behind on gaming. The newest console I have is from 2012. I never had a gaming PC. I am open to any games of any genre from the last 30 years. I love RPGs, but open to anything. Bonus if it’s cheap.

A bunch of RPGs from various subgenres that I have enjoyed playing:

  • Clair Obscur - French JRPG
  • Disco Elysium - no combat, lots of talking
  • Tyranny - the best Baldur's Gate-like from Obsidian
  • West of Loathing - a great Weird West-themed RPG
  • Ouroboros - an RPGMaker game about sequence breaking. Pity it has porn in it
  • Skyrim - open world dicking around
  • Fallout: New Vegas - probably the best 3D Fallout, needs a bunch of mods (Viva New Vegas)
  • Dragon Age: Origins - the best Baldur's Gate-like
  • Planescape: Torment - naff combat, lots of talking

Puzzle games:

  • The Witness - takes one mechanic (draw a path through a graph) and cooks it twenty different ways
  • World of Goo
  • Patrick's Parabox - the cleverest iteration on Sokoban
  • What the Golf?

Misc:

  • Aquaria - a very pretty underwater themed Metroidvania
  • Borderlands 2 - the best looter-shooter
  • The Wolf Among Us and Tales of the Borderlands - the best cinematic VNs
  • Hotline Miami 1 & 2 - top-down ultraviolence with a great soundtrack
  • Just Cause 2 - the best Just Cause
  • Limbo - a puzzle platformer
  • Portal 1 and 2 - the most famous first-person puzzle games
  • Talos Principle 1 and 2 - the best first-person puzzle games
  • RiME - the prettiest third-person puzzle/platformer
  • The Stanley Parable - the best metagame
  • Supraland - the best first-person puzzle/platformer

You've compiled a top-notch list in general, which makes the omission of (Telltale's) The Walking Dead here especially odd.

Don't like zombie games.

Fair enough. IMHO this one is worth making an exception for, but I don't really have a good way to convince you of that. In hindsight it's insane that Telltale never just turned Episode 1 of the first season into a free demo.

What is this place?

This website is a place for people who want to move past shady thinking and test their ideas in a court of people who don't all share the same biases. Our goal is to optimize for light, not heat; this is a group effort, and all commentators are asked to do their part.

The weekly Culture War threads host the most controversial topics and are the most visible aspect of The Motte. However, many other topics are appropriate here. We encourage people to post anything related to science, politics, or philosophy; if in doubt, post!

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
