Be advised: this thread is not for serious in-depth discussion of weighty topics (we have a link for that), this thread is not for anything Culture War related. This thread is for Fun. You got jokes? Share 'em. You got silly questions? Ask 'em.

What is this place?
This website is a place for people who want to move past shady thinking and test their ideas in a
court of people who don't all share the same biases. Our goal is to
optimize for light, not heat; this is a group effort, and all commentators are asked to do their part.
The weekly Culture War threads host the most
controversial topics and are the most visible aspect of The Motte. However, many other topics are
appropriate here. We encourage people to post anything related to science, politics, or philosophy;
if in doubt, post!
Check out The Vault for an archive of old quality posts.
You are encouraged to crosspost these elsewhere.
Why are you called The Motte?
A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently,
it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey",
originally identified by
philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial
but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens
this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for
the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired
propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."
On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
New post guidelines
If you're posting something that isn't related to the culture war, we encourage you to post a thread for it.
A submission statement is highly appreciated, but isn't necessary for text posts or links to largely-text posts
such as blogs or news articles; if we're unsure of the value of your post, we might remove it until you add a
submission statement. A submission statement is required for non-text sources (videos, podcasts, images).
Culture war posts go in the culture war thread; all links must either include a submission statement or
significant commentary. Bare links without those will be removed.
If in doubt, please post it!

Notes -
"It's over" is in common use as a humorous meme phrase on 4chan. I don't see any examples in the catalogs of /v/ and /g/ at this time, but an OP like "Humanbros… it's over……" would be similarly humorous in this context. (I do see one OP of simply "Bros…" on /g/, and "Soulsbros… *cough* I don't feel so good" and "Nuly bros……" on /v/.)
@ControlsFreak
ToaKraka of all people (much love to him) managed to figure this out. This gentleman. Level -1 Autism. I am very fond of him.
And you couldn't. You produced four paragraphs of appellate briefing on whether a shitpost belongs in the Friday Fun Thread, followed by an edit clarifying that you were not, in fact, filing charges. I'm grateful for your forbearance. However: the Fun Thread is the one venue where a bare link plus a one-liner isn't merely tolerated, but entirely accepted. Dawg. I'm at a loss for words. Is this why Opus 5 performs worse when set to maximum reasoning, because it uses those reasoning tokens unproductively? Much to ponder on.
I am happy to conduct an assessment if you'll pay. I'll probably charge extra, FYI.
Thanks for clarifying something in my thinking. It is a shitpost. That is, it is shit. It is bad. It is not good. Coupled with the primary purpose being to get a dig in on your outgroup, it is quite off-putting. I feel like a simple bare link would have been far better. Even a not-dumb one-liner would have been nice. It's that you're faking like you're making an argument, but without making an argument. It's like "clown hat on; clown hat off" tier of feces.
I'll be happy to conduct an assessment of how you could improve such posts if you'll pay. I'll probably charge extra, FYI. (That is to say, this new habit of you also insulting your interlocutors by demanding that they pay for you to offload your thinking to Claude contains no meaningful content, is also extremely off-putting, and it should be beneath you.)
Gee buddy, I don't like you either. I'm sure we'll both live.
Had you restricted yourself to a perfectly welcome take on the actual ramifications of said mathematical breakthroughs, I'd have been perfectly happy. Instead you were remarkably obtuse, and engaged in backseat modding while appending an edit clarifying that you weren't engaging in backseat modding. I appreciate the disclaimer roughly as much as I'd appreciate someone explaining at length why my house is an eyesore and then adding that they haven't called the HOA about it and aren't sure they would win if they did.
Consider what you've talked yourself into. The post is culture war because it has an outgroup, and we know it has an outgroup because you can imagine someone objecting to it. Run that rule over the rest of the thread and see what survives. Somebody's cat photo has an outgroup, namely dog people. I would ask what isn't culture war under this standard, but I have a guess.
It's especially funny given that my far more detailed AI updates have been accused of not being Culture War material, in the CWR thread. It's almost like reasonable people might disagree, and that a four-paragraph brief on the taxonomy of a shitpost is not the quality contribution you think it is.
In fact, I recall, multiple times, asking you to avoid interacting with me. I have a strong preference not to block anyone at all, but if you're not going to listen, we'll see how far my patience holds. I won't miss you.
God knows I'm not giving you any money, unless $ 0.00... counts, and I'm also not particularly beholden to your preferences on what I write in my spare time. And for the record, I have been offered (and tentatively accepted) @Primaprimaprima 's deal on not using LLMs. Which is quite the opposite of your nonsensical claim, and would have been discoverable by the ancient technique of asking. To him: I've been busy, and I'll get around to the logistics at some point.
Is this really what you've got? C'mon man.
I did not think it was necessarily moddable. I realized that someone might think so, and I made sure to clarify. My point was that it was bad. It is, indeed, bad. You're so desperate to avoid that issue that you must try to make the conversation about something else, and this is the best that you have?! Your complaint is that it must boggle the mind for someone to think that a post is bad, but not necessarily moddable? C'mon man. Be serious.
Read again. I said that it was an "indicator". I have separately believed and stated that certain AI issues appear to be culture war these days.
Read again. I specifically said, "it can be, depending upon the presentation".
Read again. Where did I ever say that I thought it was a quality contribution? I said that it was much less important. Please stop just making up bollocks shit to try to insult your interlocutors.
If you would like my help in using Claude to read better, pay me. See again how completely contentless that sort of shit is? How it's nothing but an insult? You can't even bring yourself to consider your own behavior, so you must deflect and insult again.
I will align my stated and revealed preferences: I am quite done talking with you, even if that implies I was particularly interested anytime lately. Good luck anyway.
