What is everyone’s go-to cocktail? I tend to be a beer guy, and keep it simple with cocktails. Gin and tonic, whiskey sour, a martini if I’m feeling fancy, or a tropical rum drink if I’m really in party mode or on the beach. Anyone have anything a bit more adventurous? I like rum, scotch, gin, bourbon, not really a huge vodka fan.
Edit: A gin martini, just to clarify. Typically with Beefeater.
It's hard to beat the easy refreshingness of a gin and tonic. Cheap, easily available ingredients that can all be classed up at your discretion. Not too sweet or too strong that you have to switch drinks after one or two. Easy to subtly switch out for a seltzer so you can pace yourself or keep sober without drawing attention. Plus, the combo of being easy to make and easy to drink makes it a perfect drink for parties.
When I'm looking for something more substantial, I'll usually go for an old fashioned or a sazerac. I'm generally happy with any of the classic rye cocktails. Though old fashioneds are dangerous, since there's like a 50/50 chance the bartender will hand you some monstrosity full of club soda and muddled fruit.
