Culture War Roundup for the week of August 3, 2026

This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.

Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.

We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:

  • Shaming.

  • Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.

  • Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.

  • Recruiting for a cause.

  • Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.

In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:

  • Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.

  • Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.

  • Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.

  • Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.

On an ad hoc basis, the mods will try to compile a list of the best posts/comments from the previous week, posted in Quality Contribution threads and archived at /r/TheThread. You may nominate a comment for this list by clicking on 'report' at the bottom of the post and typing 'Actually a quality contribution' as the report reason.

Aren't your homosexual experiences and perspectives innately 'alien' to the mainstream? Most men are repulsed and extremely repelled at the idea of having other men fuck them in the ass. Most men are similarly repelled by the idea of fucking other men's asses. They want to fuck women. Gay sex is most prominent when there aren't women around (on ships, or in male prisons, or in male pursuits like the army).

I don't think you should be trying to make an argument about nature and authenticity and true motivations when you have a distinctly unusual perspective. It's certainly interesting and novel to read, I think it's good to have some unpredictable theoretical essays here.

In a Western culture where Abrahamic religion has had 2000 years to suppress all earlier moralities, I agree that this is true. I don't think it is a human universal - there are a lot of cultures where men who consider themselves straight would have no issues dicking another guy. Ancient Greece, obviously. Bacha Bazi in Pushun Afghanistan is another notorious example.

And other disgusting traditional Pushtun practices. I'm not sure whether Bacha Bazi was the most important, or just the one which made most sense to western audiences seeking an explanation for Taliban popularity.

The modern argument about how Abrahamic religion handles male homosexuality is odd because both sides' core claims are correct.

  • The trads are correct that the holy books of all the Abrahamic religions condemn all forms of male-male sex, that if you give the key passages (the so-called "clobber passages" in the OT and NT and equivalents in the Talmud and hadith) their simple, obvious meaning the condemnation is unequivocal, and there is nothing else in the holy books that would suggest not giving the clobber passages their simple, obvious meaning.
  • The LGBT lobby is correct that the actual historical practice being condemned by these passages at the time they were written (i.e. the machismo-based homosexuality of which Bacha Bazi is the Pushtun manifestation, and which while not universal was a cross-cultural default before Abrahamic religion) looks nothing like 21st century gayness-based male homosexuality, creating a colourable "originalist" argument that the original intent of the clobber passages doesn't extend that far.

Given the long-standing theological argument about higher criticism, the Christian trads (definitely) and the LGBT crowd (probably) are interpreting the Bible correctly according to their own standard interpretive methodologies.

Yes of course, which is why I don't bother to vote and have never wanted to reproduce. I know I am a weird inconsequential homosexual and have no intention of stacking the future beyond my lifespan in my own favor. I'm not here to push my unique experiences on anyone else but think I can at least try to shed some light on things that other people wouldn't know about, especially on the eve of some autistic LLM devouring only the most pristinely sanewashed propaganda on the surface web and crystallizing it as the baseline truth of AI for the rest of eternity. I am just pissing into the void but I'd at least like to get some people wet before I go.

Well, to some degree, everyone has a distinctly unusual perspective. None of us are the same or experience the same things. Identical twins don't even have identical experiences of the world.

Sure, I am not confident in my assessment of this. I would love to know which of these two men women would choose to mate with on a desert island. I suspect it's DJ, even though Aaron is prettier, and I imagine most women would agree. I tried to flush out why I believe my intuition about male hierarchy is the same as the female intuition about male reproductive fitness in my post but don't know if I was effective.

Well if the AIs fulfill their promise they should be capable of working out what's Actually Going On and break through whatever lying we do today.

What is this place?

This website is a place for people who want to move past shady thinking and test their ideas in a court of people who don't all share the same biases. Our goal is to optimize for light, not heat; this is a group effort, and all commentators are asked to do their part.

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
