This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.
Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.
We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:

Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.
In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:

Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.

Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.

Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.

I was under the impression that "punish Canada" was from Trump's "Twitter" account (and a bunch of Canadian social media surrounding the issue).
But even as a Canadian I legitimately don't think Canada is in the right here. EU influence here is a problem, British influence is a problem (the LPC got into a bit of trouble with this; they were using British English, not Canadian English), and Chinese influence is a problem.
The solution floated at the beginning was "we want these things; in return, we will just straight up grant everyone citizenship". I see that trade deal (whether that one infographic is real or not) as continuing that posture, and to a point also demonstrating what Red would like to visit on Blue going forward by proxy. But I also believe in no taxation without representation, and if I have to pay taxes caused by the US, it's only fair that I get to vote on them and be protected in protesting against them under US law.
I honestly don't even want full annexation to go into effect here simply because the US is full-retard on things the Canadian identity actually had answers for, and while redistricting would ideally need to be part of the process we arguably had the better way. Blue political thought has already proven stupid enough to erase the legacy of the Underground Railway ending here and accuse the descendants of the people who made it of muhrasism just like they do the rural South, and universal healthcare started in a relative backwater province before the US populace really started to get interested in it. "Laboratories of democracy" is kind of their thing.
But I don't think the average trade war belligerent understands that, so just like when you ask a MAGA supporter what Trump has actually done for the country, I get the exact same response when I ask the Elbows Up-ers. And for the same reason- where Blue American culture has demanded the destruction of what used to be a nuanced look at the rest of the country, and the Elbows Up demographic adapted it perfectly- I think they're going to lose the(ir) nation as a consequence.
