Read the quote below from the same article. This actually updates me slightly towards did not have vitiligo. It's clear that they view this as a culture war issue and are entirely unreliable. Just complete slop.

So there is no question that Michael Jackson had vitiligo, by his own admission and according to his autopsy after his death. He did appear to use Benoquin to help depigment his skin, but not because he “wanted to be white”, but as an FDA-approved treatment for his vitiligo. He was a remarkable person who was a self-proclaimed perfectionist who was undoubtedly stressed by his vitiligo and visibility, and this may have been an important factor in his avoidance of the public later in life, his use of drugs (which was ultimately the cause of his death), and his frustration about the press’s invasion into his private life.

I think both you are the writer are setting this up as a binary. Either he had vitiligo, or he was trying to change his appearance to look more European.

My understanding was that he did have vitiligo, and once he realised he wasn't going to be able to cover it up, he decided to go the other way to lighten his skin. He then had the surgeries to make everything 'match' racially.

What's the alternative, that his doctor diagnosed him with a disease he didn't have and gave him drugs he didn't need, all so that a handsome, popular African American popstar could race-swap for no reason? It's not as if his ancestry was a shameful secret.

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
