That's Gene Wolfe for you! I read a collection of his short stories in my late teens and it melted my brain (in a good way). I could just about recognise that there were a ton of things going on that I wasn't getting.
Re-reading really does repay, because there will be parts where you go "Argh! That is what was going on? You fooled me, Mr. Wolfe, you genuinely had me going there".
