Small-Scale Question Sunday for September 13, 2026

This may not be exactly 'small scale' but it seems like the best place for it.

I attend a Calvary chapel church, and I'm being considered for a teaching role, and potentially looking towards taking over when the pastor retires. Lots to consider about this, but one thing that's a sticking point for me: Calvary chapel dogmatically teaches a pre-trib rapture, and I'm not convinced.

So, my questions, for anyone who has thoughts on them:

  1. Do any of y'all believe in pre-trib rapture, or more generally dispensationalism, and how would you steel-man the case for it? Or for others, how would you argue against it?

  2. What are your thoughts on having to teach a doctrine you're not confident in?

Is there a logical connection between these things, or do they just travel together because of Darby? The link between dispensationalism and a literal 1000-calendar-year Christ-rules-on-this-earth Millennium (I think the technical term is pre-millenialism) makes sense, but I don't see why the timing of the rapture affects the dispensational structure at all.

Yeah I don't see the connection exactly, but at a recent conference a guy told me they were basically the same thing, that each one entails the other. It's that kind of thinking that puts me off this kind of theology, even if I think the scriptural basis for pre-trib rapture seems reasonable.

What is this place?

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
