This weekly roundup thread is intended for all culture war posts. 'Culture war' is vaguely defined, but it basically means controversial issues that fall along set tribal lines. Arguments over culture war issues generate a lot of heat and little light, and few deeply entrenched people ever change their minds. This thread is for voicing opinions and analyzing the state of the discussion while trying to optimize for light over heat.
Optimistically, we think that engaging with people you disagree with is worth your time, and so is being nice! Pessimistically, there are many dynamics that can lead discussions on Culture War topics to become unproductive. There's a human tendency to divide along tribal lines, praising your ingroup and vilifying your outgroup - and if you think you find it easy to criticize your ingroup, then it may be that your outgroup is not who you think it is. Extremists with opposing positions can feed off each other, highlighting each other's worst points to justify their own angry rhetoric, which becomes in turn a new example of bad behavior for the other side to highlight.
We would like to avoid these negative dynamics. Accordingly, we ask that you do not use this thread for waging the Culture War. Examples of waging the Culture War:

Attempting to 'build consensus' or enforce ideological conformity.

Making sweeping generalizations to vilify a group you dislike.

Recruiting for a cause.

Posting links that could be summarized as 'Boo outgroup!' Basically, if your content is 'Can you believe what Those People did this week?' then you should either refrain from posting, or do some very patient work to contextualize and/or steel-man the relevant viewpoint.
In general, you should argue to understand, not to win. This thread is not territory to be claimed by one group or another; indeed, the aim is to have many different viewpoints represented here. Thus, we also ask that you follow some guidelines:

Speak plainly. Avoid sarcasm and mockery. When disagreeing with someone, state your objections explicitly.

Be as precise and charitable as you can. Don't paraphrase unflatteringly.

Don't imply that someone said something they did not say, even if you think it follows from what they said.

Write like everyone is reading and you want them to be included in the discussion.

I think there's a special flavor of this thing on the left - it's hard for me to imagine a lot of people on the right hiding behind their victimhood, or how much they are oppressed.
There's plenty of outgroup-homogeneity-bias to go around. I realize that I may have been committing some of that myself in my comments here, in framing "accusing people of being government operatives" as the central example of organizational dysfunction, when in fact it is a peculiarly right-wing tendency, just as "oppression Olympics" is a peculiarly left-wing form. Each side can look at the other, see the lack of the particular type of dysfunction they're most familiar with, and assume the grass is greener.
But still, we can step back and look at concrete results. Whatever's going on behind the scenes in left-wing groups, that's not preventing them from opening up scores of retail shops in every city nationwide, whereas the right wing has a lot of catching up to do.
I am a former leftist, so I would say it's more of a I-know-the-ingroup-since-I-was-a-part-of-it-for-N-years bias, but it's a bias nevertheless. I see conservatives in BC disintegrate over and over since 2020-ish, so I definitely can see how it can be samey on the right too, for different reasons maybe, but petty disagreements causing strife type of stuff.

Shortly after you posted that, another reply arrived doing just that. The specifics may vary, but invoking victimhood to dodge responsibility is too effective a tactic for any group to forgo.

The thing is, I honestly think they did (to a fair degree, with caveats, etc). I couldn't have imagined thinking of myself as any kind of conservative 10 years. But the difference between the right now and the right pre-GamerGate is huge. They really do seem, on average, to be much more sane and reasonable and realistic than they were.
And it's really juxtaposed by the way I think most of the left went completely off the rails and untethered.
She's probably pointing to MAGA, which, honestly, I wouldn't say is all rational. And to be completely fair to her, the president of US whipped his base into frenzy. But "the right" isn't just MAGA, there are a lot of different worldviews and opinions on the right, a lot of diversity of thought.
