Right, I think more perceptive watchers will pick this up quickly but at first you are supposed to think he isn't at fault. Later on it becomes clear he nearly has everything he needs but is justttttt off, not sure what will happen in future seasons/books, he may eventually put it together.

And at the same time - you also start to realize that with like only 3-4 exceptions, everyone else is the same as him or worse (even at the mothership). Cough cough dogs cough.

I'm not sure Lamb is a bastard, and I think perhaps his off-puttingness is part of his coping mechanism for not being one.

I feel River should have grown a bit. It annoyed me in season 4 (where I stopped) that the writers were keeping him in a kind of development stasis. In particular after some of the wild shit that had gone down in the previous season.

Probably, but I also don't think it is unreasonable for him to be portrayed as an idiot who is skilled, which makes him more dangerous and dysfunctional than most of the idiots who are corrupt or just idiots. Lack of growth goes along with that.

I suppose I resent as a viewer the notion that I should invest time on plots involving someone who is an irredeemable idiot.

I mean isn't the premise of the show using idiots to solve spy problems?

That is one of the premises--but Lamb is not incompetent. He is just a slob and has been eroded into a slob of a man. Even Taverner recognizes his worth. I think I was hoping Cartwright would develop somehow. Otherwise it's just Keystone Cops, the MI:5 version.

Lamb is a damn good character and I think that covers for a lot of sins lol.

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
