I just got back from the theater where I saw A24’s Primetime

I am not exaggerating when I say that this movie is, quite possibly, the best Western since Unforgiven.

The vistas of plains and deserts are starkly beautiful. The whole movie was shot on film, and it shows.

The plot follows the structure you’d expect, charting Chris Hanson’s career as a deputy Marshall and legendary gunfighter. As we all expected from the trailers, it culminates with Hanson’s famous one-against-ten shootout with the D’Ambrosio gang at the QT Corral.

Pattinson’s performance is electric. No trace of the English dandy accent, just hard as nails frontier drawl. The way he roars at Lucky Vince D’Ambrosio, “Come out and fight, you cunny-rustling varmint! I mean to kill you in one minute, or take you to Carson City to see you HANG!” gave me chills.

As usual, some bleeding heart liberals will take issue with the scene where Hanson drags the corrupt Justice of the Peace into the town square and hangs him, but they whine about everything anyway. Marshall Hanson was a good man.

10/10 see it in theaters if at all possible.

This was a good enough writeup to get me to Google it and see that I'd been had. So... solid bait.

In one of his stings, Chris Hanson busted a man named Vince D’Ambrosio. D’Ambrosio, for some reason, decided to show up to his “date” in a full western duster and Lee Can Cleef style cowboy hat (black, of course).

Ever since then, 4chan had a running gag where they would post screencaps of the episode, with various and captions like it was a western.

Unfortunately, there are no longer enough people here from 4chan to get the joke. Perhaps there never were. That’s also why everyone thinks I’m a lunatic for ranting about Anya Taylor Joy like a dumbass.

To be fair, you can't expect every 4chan denizen to be familiar with every 4chan meme. I've been browsing 4chan (including /tv/) for a fair amount of time (the oldest files in my folder of unsorted images date from 2015), and though I found your comment funny I didn't realize that it had a basis other than absurdism.

What is this place?

This website is a place for people who want to move past shady thinking and test their ideas in a court of people who don't all share the same biases. Our goal is to optimize for light, not heat; this is a group effort, and all commentators are asked to do their part.

The weekly Culture War threads host the most controversial topics and are the most visible aspect of The Motte. However, many other topics are appropriate here. We encourage people to post anything related to science, politics, or philosophy; if in doubt, post!

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
