Qeekly Finance Thread 2026-10-31

A weekly thread to discuss financial matters - from personal all the way up to global.

Ground Rules

  • Remember that we're all just Internet randos. Don't bet your life savings on a hot tip from this thread.
  • Keep culture war in the culture war thread. Yes, global events may impact our personal finances, but that does not mean we have to incessantly harp on culture war aspects here. If you are going to discuss it, please stick to the practical impacts of it on an individual level.
  • Be kind. Remember that everyone here comes from different circumstances. We all have different resources available and different risk tolerances.
  • Don't let the perfect be the enemy of the good. Better is better. Celebrate people when they take a step up and work to move their finances in the right direction. Don't flame out because they haven't followed what you consider the optimal path. Everybody has to start somewhere.

This is due to improved engineering significantly reducing the cost of inference every quarter

On the one hand, this makes sense, and from that perspective is good for the primes; on the other hand, I do think if this is the primary driver it increases the likelihood that Anthropic overcommitted in their future compute build-out. But perhaps they actually priced that in; lower prices might mean better user returns which might lead to higher demand, more overall spend and higher revenue on greater margins.

less a slowdown in the overall market and more OAI showing stronger competition in the coding space

This also tracks, based on what I have heard about Astra. Interestingly, though, it seems OAI is slashing their latest fundraising target to $20 billion, down from $30 billion - which doesn't seem like a great portent for Anthropic's IPO (although, who knows, perhaps it's a next-level play by OAI to ruin things for them?)

It returns us to the question of whether capabilities will advance enough in the next year to start making a real impact in other sectors.

Yep, the trillion-dollar question!
