Ah yes, the bit that got Lt. Col. Tucker “Cinco” Hamilton into trouble, because the way he told it made it sound like "it really happened, guys!" and then he had to later clarify that this was only a thought-experiment. Or something. Maybe it was just him and a bunch of the guys blueskying about this kind of thing over a few cans of Bud Light?:

But in a statement to Insider, the US air force spokesperson Ann Stefanek denied any such simulation had taken place.

“The Department of the Air Force has not conducted any such AI-drone simulations and remains committed to ethical and responsible use of AI technology,” Stefanek said. “It appears the colonel’s comments were taken out of context and were meant to be anecdotal.”

I think I'm not going to be checking outside my windows for murderbot AI drones quite yet 😁

Why are you called The Motte?

A motte is a stone keep on a raised earthwork common in early medieval fortifications. More pertinently, it's an element in a rhetorical move called a "Motte-and-Bailey", originally identified by philosopher Nicholas Shackel. It describes the tendency in discourse for people to move from a controversial but high value claim to a defensible but less exciting one upon any resistance to the former. He likens this to the medieval fortification, where a desirable land (the bailey) is abandoned when in danger for the more easily defended motte. In Shackel's words, "The Motte represents the defensible but undesired propositions to which one retreats when hard pressed."

On The Motte, always attempt to remain inside your defensible territory, even if you are not being pressed.
