Cantonese is declining due to a mix of intra-sinosphere immigration (tends to speak Mandarin), less push from education system and Hong Kong losing the media edge that it had for decades
Most Chinese speakers over 30 or so will have a bit of Cantonese just due to how dominant Hong Kong cinema and TV were across broader Chinese culture.

Yeah vibewise I visit a couple times a year for work and whatnot. Whole vibe in HK felt way more optimistic and cheerful back half of 2025 than it otherwise has in years.

I mean kids for the most part don't really incur the 'massive medical expenditure to win another year of quasi-life' issue that the elderly do. Part of the equation is that the current level of elder care is just unsustainable unless a precipice is reached for genuine productive longevity instead of elongated fragility.

Yeah but this stuff always runs into the brick wall of chronic conditions and lifetime disability. Even in a universe where disability cover was confined to just exceedingly obvious issues the costs can snowball ridiculously

Vets have a staggeringly high suicidal rate which is atleast partly due to the amount of euthanasia that their jobs tend to involve. I've got veterinary friends and the stories they tell are quite depressing.

Dissuade the best and brightest? Not the employers? It's not like the bestest and brightest are the ones paying directly.
I thihk the best pathway would be for the best and brightest to go back to places of origin and work super hard to develop their own competing paradigms. Every best and brightest who's working on product management or consulting or zero sum finance nonsense is somebody who could be making an active difference in the future. Sadly most lack the personal courage to build a future for themselves.

The best and brightest aren't getting kicked out by a 100k charge. As lovers of subcontinental culture we should be thankful that the happy medium tier remains and is given opportunities to affect systemic reward. It would be a tragedy and an utter betrayal of one's fellow man to abscond to go play zero sum games in the West
