Treason's Harbor - Stuck in Malta while their ship is refitting Aubrey and Maturin discover the place is infested with prostitutes, French spies and a geriatric Admiral that can't keep his hands off the help.

I'm still enjoying this series and I'm not even half way through. I hope the quality keeps up.

Accurate. There is a cultural and probably (my theory) genetic temperament that makes whites share and care. Think European killing Winters in the old days.

Beyond this its performative luxury beliefs. Rich whiteys living in gated communities that will never need to deal with the consequences of their actions.

Happy to be corrected by others.

Bit of a throwback, but I'd love this to happen so much. Good call.

Nothing beats sleeping after a hard workout and magnesium. So relaxing its hard to get up.

There's a lot of bees around. If you multiply it out then we'd still need to put great effort into satisfying their desires, likewise with other insects. There are lots of ants and rats and whatever else, ludicrous numbers of them.

As a random aside, reading this gave me flashbacks to when I attended a 10 day Vipassana meditation retreat. Part of the expected behaviour while you are there is that (besides vows of silence, chastity, vegetarianism, no physical contact or eye contact) you are expected to not harm any other being. This is pretty much in line with strict Buddhist precepts.

We were given guidance to try not to step on ants while wandering the grounds and to try not to harm flies/bees/other insects. It wasn't that hard really, except to not reflexively slap bugs on your skin but brush them off gently instead. Also, I ended up not looking too closely at the tracks I was walking on because otherwise I'd slow to a snail's pace. See no evil and all that.

How would sealing prevent putting the wrong items in the bag in the first place?

The only crime I usually see from women is getting their husbands killed with their boyfriends which has been happening a whole lot more now.

Women usually outsource their murders through a man like this. The unjust thing is that the man as the physical actor always gets a larger prison sentence.

Using your child as a shield and making them do bad things.

Men do this too, but there seems to be a theme where women use agents to act in their stead.

I've seen quite a few porch pirates use their children to steal, so none of this surprises me any more. Lots of ragebait videos out there about this sort of thing if you go looking.

You're right though. In general I suspect women are better at following 'the rules' (agreeableness) which has downstream impacts on criminality. I remember once hearing about a SE Asian nation (Thailand?) only hiring women as traffic police because they wouldn't extort bribes like the men would.

Yeah she's gone. What the heck was she thinking?

I'm surprised delivery drivers would be that brazen because of the traceability. But then again, we have sealed food order bags for the delivery apps for 'peace of mind', so its likely that this type of thing is common, even for low value goods. As long as there are multiple parties involved in the chain of custody then there is always someone else to point the finger out (in this care a 'mystery' porch pirate).

Can you give us an update later if they let you know of disciplinary action?

This is fair, my comment was a bit of a snipe.

I just don't want to see this rhetoric on any side.

A large part of modern seduction theory involves redirecting any conversations about commitment during the early stages. This is so no promises need to be made while dangling an implied possibility of a relationship at least until after sex. No lying except perhaps by omission.

Not all men put the above into practice however. Some genuinely aren't sure if they want a relationship with the woman until things progress.

That's not even getting to the women that are very willing to (or even prefer to) have sex without commitment.

Heavily against mass immigration, but many of my friends are new immigrants of the type that I don't want to see coming here en masse. This includes some of the women I've dated (some even without PR visa).

I've thought about this before and have compared it to Ayn Rand claiming welfare. I'm against the policy, but while it exists I will exploit it in my personal life.

TIL, thanks.

Your anecdote reminds me of how much H.P. Lovecraft was a xenophobic misanthrope.

But his stories wouldn't have been the same if he didn't have that deep fear and hatred.

Not justifying it. Just saying that its sometimes better to separate the art from the artist.

But just as people who want to "end masculinity" and "end the gender binary" are not talking about literally exterminating males, you know perfectly well what Ignatiev actually meant.

This argument would never hold against any other group; women, blacks, jews themselves. We can't accept and normalise this sort of rhetoric. Its indefensible.

I feel your pain and while I work in a different (private) industry I have had to deal with all of these issues. Many professional fields have to deal with this.

Maybe I have a bad attitude, but I've long stopped caring about how accurate anything on my timesheet is.

This is basically where you end up. Even to the point of billing other jobs if necessary to cover the time. You get what you incentivise.

You're in for a treat.

The Ionian Mission.

Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin return to Mediterranean for the first time in something like 6 books in a Temu Ship of the Line.

Will Stephen finally get ganked by French Intelligence? Will Aubrey get any on the side? Will they run out of Plum Duff? Let's find out!

I'll give it a go, thankyou.

Me too, I haven't really played around with AI for some weird anxiety about not being able to apply it effectively. I'm kind of sticking my head in the sand on AI to avoid thinking about my FOMO.

I think the main reason they are not as disruptive is because they aren't done cooking.

This is my take. Its still a nascent technology.

For some reason this popped into my head. and I compared it to this or even this.

I don't think AI is going to be a VR style hype train to nowhere.

"If your project has any industrial application of interest to the CCP, assume that any Chinese national is legally obliged to share any information they have access to or can easily obtain with the CCP"

Western govts have the capacity to create a basic screen like this, but for some reason they don't. I wish they did and had even a clown HR'ish rep to run research students through a basic process screen like this and send it up the chain for further analysis if it gets complicated.

Mainland Chinese students (and some ethnic Chinese 2nd+ generation residents/citizens) have been doing Industrial Espionage for the CCP for ages. This could be justified on that alone if they don't have the state capacity to vet them for access to certain research projects.

I can't see how Chinese students in particular are involved in the latest Israel/Gaza 'terrorist support' fiasco. They usually keep a low profile regarding politics. Ethnic chinese students are often monitored by the CCP in foreign countries for support of Chinese related stuff (Taiwan, Falun Gong, Tibet, Uyghurs, Hong Kong etc). Haven't seen any of that flare up recently.

Usually there's more social cohesion in rural areas. Your anecdotes aren't a good sign.
