To be fair though, Bezos and the rock are vastly more impressive conquests in part because they would require a lot more power to victimise than pretty young women. I think power is one dynamic at play in that sense, but it can't be the be all and end all - it requires more power to target a pretty young girl than a feeble old woman too, but victims of rape are way more likely to be under the age of 35 than over 65.
"Rape is all about power, not about sex" always seemed kind of callous to me though. It feels like a cope, although an incredibly disturbing one - you often hear it said after a person sees the victim for the first time, and to me it comes across as something like "Wait what? This ugly person got raped and I can't get a date? Rape must be about power, there is no way the rapist found her sexy." Which is also why I think people just go along with it - they don't want to even consider where this meme came from or why it's so popular, because they don't want to learn it is that cope.

But maybe in 100 years the panopticon is actually effective and you could be an unmitigated dick with no fear of consequences? Or maybe in a hundred years we will be celebrating the quinquagenary of our victory in the Sino American war, where motorcycle clubs provided the last line of defence against the invasion, and society expects you to treat them with deference and respect.

Hollywood hates slavery so much they have to make it seems at least one movie a year reminding everyone not to do it, but only interracial slavery because they are just not bothered by it if it's intraracial? And this belief both saturates the culture of Hollywood - the capital of the US propaganda machine - but needs to be guessed at from outside Hollywood? I would find that easier to believe if we didn't live in the same universe as Rotherham, Zimbabwe, and BLM.

You know what could be good along those lines - a little merchandising. Stickers with just "TheMotte.org" on them, that kind of thing. I don't think you should go heavy into it, it would clash with the atmosphere of this place, but it would also get you a little revenue (no strings attached too, unlike donations) and it goes a long way to building community. A really long way. We also have a couple of memes that might make good merch, like a sticker saying "Actually A Quality Contribution!", which would be quite strong outside of this place because it projects confidence and exclusivity, and is unique enough to us to start a bread crumb trail for the curious.

I can only offer anecdata, but in my experience you are right. I find progressive girls sexier in general than conservative girls, so that's who I date and while I have had a couple nope out when they learned my political position, a more common experience I have had is hearing them say in group conversation that they wouldn't date a Trump voter, and then silently beg me to remain silent with their eyes. It makes me feel like the devil, I love it.

Lol exactly. No, I am pretty sure part of the attraction for me is self loathing, but also the whole secrecy angle and the corruption angle really get me going. Also I am a 'natural beauty' kind of guy, and it is much easier in the places I frequent to find progressive girls who look after themselves but don't wear a shitload of make-up or have cosmetic surgery.

Or they told the truth, and the non English speaking migrants didn't understand, so they said something like "you're going to Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts. You know, near Boston?" and the immigrants only got 'Boston' out of it.
You should learn from the other side's mistakes here - when you are so upset you try to find a way to sue someone without any suspects or statutes in mind, just the burning desire to sue, you need to take a step back, because you are going to make mistakes.

Of course it's true. Most people steal because of need. There are very few sociopaths out there, and not that many gypsies. Fewer still scions of millionaires on heroin. Most people fucked up on drugs are poor - they were poor before they got hooked and they sure as shit are going to stay that way when they are hooked. And most criminals are poor - most criminals barely have a social security number, let alone a bank account - you can't put stolen or dealt money in the bank, or use your boss as a reference on a rental application or resume. So you have to deal with other criminals, because they are in the same boat. You buy a burner phone and a gun because you can't rely on society (which also can't rely on you). And it's done, no matter how much money you make you will always be poor now, as far as the government is concerned.
It's still accurate though, most criminals are actually poor. Because the other thing you get with no mortgage or credit or loans is no responsibility - no reason to pocket money away, or learn how to save or invest. And like everything else, if you don't exercise impulse control it atrophies, so they do dumb shit and end up in jail.

I don't think that's true. Part of Osama's point was to inflict a wound on the US like it had never seen, and the US had seen 300 deaths before. If they'd hit the statue of liberty or waited until night it would have sent a similar message, but only to the people in charge - by killing so many civilians he said "you can't protect your people" in a way that everyone understood. Or to put it another way, we could have been cavalierly using 9/11 as a unit of measurement a few years later, instead of 20.
If you referred to something as a 9/11 in mainstream circles in 2010 you would be a pariah, it was considered outrageously bad form. I speak from experience here - my best friend at the time was too online, and in places like 4chan and poe it was regularly joked about (because edge), and he used it like that at the birthday party we were at. He didn't make a joke, he just used it too nonchalantly. Instantly I was told I was too drunk and needed to take my friend home (which just made me laugh, which just made everyone more upset, so it's partly my fault) and for about two years after that any invitation I got came with a request not to invite him. The human toll was necessary for the impact.

Oh, you mean 9/11 was terrorism, and that's what made it different? If so I agree entirely. Mentally I put "a 9/11 a week" in the same category as the people who liken covid deaths to car accidents and wonder why we still drive cars - usually missing the point.
Sorry, I had a conversation with a youngster last week who actually thought the main point of 9/11 was flying a symbol of modernity into another symbol of modernity and the deaths were incidental, and that's why it upset everyone and covid deaths don't.

I can't speak for tarrou, but I thought from the op there was a decent chance this was a honeypot to declare right wingers here fascist, because that seems to be the point of about half the conversations about Italian politics on the internet. Like when someone makes an op arguing about the holocaust, but with a dash of subtlety to hook those who think holocaust arguing is too obvious by half.
It is both annoying and exhausting to think like that though, so I appreciate you providing a path forward to actual conversations about this, and I wish there was some way I could say all this without distracting back to the mean. Unfortunately all the Italians in my family are even more blackpilled about their national politics than I am, when you bring up Italian politics with them you can practically see them deciding between telling you they don't give a shit and putting a gun in their mouth.

Yeah, or maybe synchronicity in the Jungian "meaningful coincidence of two or more events where something other than the probability of chance is involved", with the 'something other' being memetic. People who are all thinking about the same topic are likely to be in a similar headspace. You want to decry nepotism, and you think some recent instance feels particularly soviet, and what was that cool word they had for them? Nomenklatura.
This is how memes are started though, and nomenklatura definitely fits the bill, so it is possible everyone saying it picked it up from the same source. They don't even have to do it consciously - if it fits well your brain might do it anyway.

Therefore, in order for the free world to exist it must be possible to change your country at will. It’s easy to see that nationalism runs contrary to this goal. If you only ever can be accepted in one country, if you can only be permitted to run important businesses or organisations in the country of your birth; and doomed to be an irrelevant outsider in all others — well, then your government has you by the balls — you have no real negotiating position with the state.

It sounds like a neat trick for tv shows and books, and I am going to try to apply it there (cheers!) but I already do that with games sort of. With most games I give myself a week to finish them, or hook me, otherwise I move on. And with exploratory platformers I try to do it the week they are released, so I can potentially find secrets no one else has (it's very satisfying).
But rdr2, I could never get sick of that game. If a game leans heavy into making shit diegetic I try and get lost in it, and often succeed. I got kind of addicted to it in far cry 2 (the best one) and then rdr (I actually appreciated how much of a pain in the ass it was to get the horseman horses in undead nightmare, because it gave me an excuse to cowboy it up) and now rdr2.
